This is true, I do love GoG, and impulsedriven.com (which is now run by gamestop) they have good deals as well.
For the Angel of Death spread his wings on the blast, And breathed in the face of the foe as he passed, And the eyes of the sleepers waxed deadly and chill, And their hearts but once heaved, and for ever grew still!

Killing baby animals stopped some people from buying fur jackets, so were the ones who continued to pay supporters or simply didn't care enough about the future of our products?Texhnolyzed wrote:I question your will to "support Egosoft in all their ventures" if Steam is enough to stop you from actually supporting Egosoft.

Steam, to me, is like Wal-Mart. You can't beat their prices now, but wait until they smother out any competition. Though Actually I usually will buy a game from Wal-Mart and then take it home and have to activate it on steam. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻) . btw I pledged for star citizen and got a usb stick of the game. I guess that was probably pioneered by steam
.

Are we allowed to talk about that?ldarkelfl wrote:I don't love steam, but it allowed me to play games without the need to pirate them and that says it all.

If XR doesn't come out in a physical form, it will be a very hard sell for me. We don't actually own anything we buy from Steam, so without a no-DRM copy, I'm out.

ACtualy that's quite funny, because yes - you can't now legally obtain Freelancer (and a whole bunch of older games), unless you are ready to order used CD from south africa to be delivered in a five years. Thanks to Steam, such a situation is much less common for more modern games. GoG has done a great deal in legalizing old-games exchange market, but they still has problems with games that don't have active publishers or publishers just do not care for some reason.Raider480 wrote:Are we allowed to talk about that?ldarkelfl wrote:I don't love steam, but it allowed me to play games without the need to pirate them and that says it all.![]()

X:R will be published on physical copies (how exactly - you shall ask from corresponding publisher, either Deepsilver or Tri Sinergy), but it will require Steam to activate anyway (in other words - it would be just steam cache to skip most of download). If XR doesn't come out in a physical form, it will be a very hard sell for me. And no, there will be no publisher-published no-DRM version under any circumstances. When you've last seen such a thing in a modern world?

This is true, normally we are purchasing the "rights to use the software" (in various forms e.g. serial key) from the publisher even when buying a physical copy, which we generally pay more for because of the medium its transported on. The same applies to music which is why (in some countries) a person is allowed to make backup copies.Raider480 wrote:We don't actually own anything we buy from Steam, so without a no-DRM copy, I'm out.
I purchased CE Defiance and DLC from Trion (whom I trusted at the time) but was unable to download or play the game (along with thousands of other people) due to their crappy programing of their installer. After weeks of discussion with their tech support and my (two, one fixed and the other one mobile 3g) isp's they agreed that they couldn't help me but would refund ANY part of my purchase because it was against their policy. Steam, as I know from experience (e.g. The Witcher 2), follow a similar policy.
Like religion, Steam has bought some wonderful things into this world which is why they get so many zealous followers, online companies (e.g. apple) these day seem to be more religious in nature and the same applies to their followers.Night Nord wrote:Thanks to Steam, such a situation is much less common for more modern games.
But then the Christians bought down the Roman Empire, burnt women alive, had the crusade ..... and I won't even start with the Muslims ....
I know, oh I know.Night Nord wrote:GoG has done a great deal in legalizing old-games exchange market, but they still has problems with games that don't have active publishers or publishers just do not care for some reason.
HardWar
Apart from Bandit Kings of Ancient China, one the the best games I've ever played .......... the depravities I would go through to see that title come out on GoG ..........

This is one of my largest concerns and one of the (several) main reasons I now avoid them. This stems from another concern; Why do people worship companies like a temple?Mountain_Puncher wrote:Steam, to me, is like Wal-Mart. I would really like to buy the game but i prefer not to use Steam. I do have some games on Steam because i don't have a choice. And that's what it is about choice. Developers should be giving gamers options and not forcing people into to using Steam. If i do buy a game that requires Steam i will wait till the price is heavily reduced i will never buy it at full price.

I know of a company that makes some Space games and they don't have any DRM at all apart from the personalization of your disc. They have a bit of a following because of not using DRM on all there games.BDK wrote:I will buy a copy but not from steam, I refuse to support that company in any shape or form.

I discovered your account can get "locked" if you don't log in often enough, though I don't know if this still happens, it's a pain in the a$$Captain Lemmiwinks wrote:... steam says i must enter a code as it doesnt know my pc personally ....

Considering the vast majority of money from your purchase is going to the developer, you're only hurting them more. Valve employees take baths in cash, they're not the ones you're going to hurt by doing that as an act of spite.nova beacon wrote:I would really like to buy the game but i prefer not to use Steam. I buy stuff on sale because I like sales, not out if spite.
Steam was around and excellent before there was competition.Mountain_Puncher wrote:Steam, to me, is like Wal-Mart. You can't beat their prices now, but wait until they smother out any competition.
Edit: Also, there seems to be a lot of low-tier trolling going on here, knock it off and try to make an intelligent argument if you have issues.

Personally, I have had no issues with Steam in the past couple of years I have been actively using it again. Got my Steam account several years ago when it first came out and at the time I hated it.
Steam is not perfect and what so-called competition there is are not competition in any real sense IMO. I have Uplay (via Steam) for Assassin's Creed games and Origin for any recent EA games.
There are some who have issues with Steam (and similar services) for varying reasons, some rational and some not. However, where X-Rebirth is concerned it is most likely going to be a case of having to take the Steam medicine if you want your X-Rebirth sugar lump.

As they said: the result speak for itself, most people don't have problem with Steam, me included ..I was pretty eh with Steam (use it for games that need it, I don't have a card back then so only physical copy games) until I managed to participate in some Humble Bundle sales and then Steam sales...
