Added links to the main info sources to the OP...

Not adding an "Updated" to the title just yet, since I've not really added any new info :(

Not really new info (sorry) just a new quote from one of the existing interviews where Bernd confirms it's still a sandbox game.

I just got a newsletter in my mail box, and there is one thing strikes me as weird from the Q&A section.
What features have been left out from previous series? - Things haven't been left out just because they're hard to develop, rather we've concentrated on bring in gameplay features that are 'cooler'. Previously, for example, it was possible to pilot a capital ship from its bridge. No more. It took many players a long time to get to the point where they would own one and it wasn't a huge amount of fun to fly. If we'd included this, it would have put us back a bit.
So ... if I understand this right, no more player-flyable capital ship? :?

Random sector generator ?
I hope not, but that thought has occurred. Otherwise, how can they genuinely claim "infinite" :?

Tim
Than it probably will be the illusion of infinite space. Which is fine. Who cares if it's actually infinite, as far as it seems so ?

Based on the last news, , Rebirth will be all what I wanted ... increased detail and customization, bigger stations, greater sectors, potential for exploretion and building/finding/exploring new acesses to remote parts of space. At least I had this impression. I hope unrealistic strafing speeds will be dealt with, too.

But, if you read the quotes highlighted at the start of this thread, there was a second part to what Bernd said in that interview (which is not in the X-Universe News):

Anybody knows anything about landing on a planet's surface? Just as in Elite: Frontier?

Big news from this thread.
Bernd wrote:Hi guys,

ok lets be a bit more precise about the capital ships then. Piloting a huge capital ship from the seat of the pilot is boring, therefore we left that out.

ON THE OTHER HAND: The player can own and can command ships and he can use them for a lot more different things than before.

Stations as well as large ships have a lot more ways to interact with them now and your own as well as other factions ships are much more interesting to play with.

Instead of sitting in the cockpit you will assign people to command ships for you.

Hope this clears things up...

Nope.

Capital Ships!

Post by David Howland »

I hate plugging the same point as everyone BUT; piloting M2s might have been like driving a bus but remember the thrill when one first jumped from ones M6 into an M2. Getting to grips with all that power, shielding and cannons that could blow anything out of existence, it was great, yes most did not make an m2 their personal transport but the occassions when you did pilot an M2, actually taking on Xenon fleets as the hunter not the scared rabbit, oh the gratification!
There is also the problem of remote capital control, the jumping in, in an M6 to rescue a defense patrol of, M1, M2 and M7, from certain destruction, has become a rediculously major feature of X series gameplay. The game engine is going to have to have moved on light years from X3 to get over this. Lets hope it has, because unless this failing has been resolved, saying you can still own destroyers but remotely control them, will be a useless, empty, fob off!
The BANISHED RETURNS.

Congratulations Egosoft on increasing memory usage from 2 to 3 Gb.
Bin playing X too long when Egosoft refuses to sell you their latest game?

Personally, removing a feature is not good. It's one less option. But, I can't say as I really care - we don't know enough about X:R yet to know whether it's something we're going to miss.

The only reason I fly an M2 is because I am better than the AI. If the AI is up to scratch then I'm quite happy to let it have the job. And we'll have to wait and see about that...

A few updates from some deleted quotes from the KGN interview. Kindly translated by NetHawk.

Known
No landing on planets.
Stations in low atmosphere.
No random "sector" generation.

Hinted
The map/universe is still based on a sector basis

In the last part of that interview Bernd briefly mentioned that some of the original X races will return, while others will not. There are also supposed to be new races.

Been following this thread with interest. I understand that this thread wants to focus on more concrete information and avoid wild speculation but KloHunt3r's last post set a dimmly ringing bell in my head.

Was the X Encyclopedia from the Super Box not supposed to have some hints to what the TNBT was supposed to be/may contain?

I may be way off base here but was this true and if so what could be divined from it?

If I'm remembering correctly the only races described in the X encyclopedia that aren't (largely) present in the existing games are:

The Ancients - Creators and operators of the gate network. Referenced vaguely in the games but not elaborated on to any meaningful extent.

The Sohnen - A race of highly advanced artificial intelligence working with the Ancients. I think one of their ships made a brief appearance during Reunion, but it wasn't a major plot point.

The Wenendra - Sentient space whales. They inhabit an entirely aquatic planet whose location is only known to the Boron government. Being without advanced technology or a particularly developed culture or organized society, they were hidden from the rest of the Commonwealth by the Boron. They aren't present in any of the existing X games.

The encyclopedia does state that there are numerous alien species besides those of the Commonwealth scattered throughout the Milky Way and the rest of the universe. These races possess varying degrees of technological advancement, but it doesn't get into specifics.

Yeah, been stated fairly clearly that there'll be some familiar faces and some new. Not entirely sure whether he just means races and/or factions, tho. You can be sure there'll be something similar to what we have now - some are friends with each other, some enemies with some of the others, some enemies with everyone!

Anyone notice it doesn't say "capitals", it says SHIPS.

You can OWN and COMMAND. Nowhere does it say we can FLY them. This...worries me.
