Spoils of War - 05

Captain’s log;
Earth Stardate 2938
Captured Pirate Falcon

---
Argon Prime, Argon Prime. How to get there without knowing the way. We knew the general direction. It was somewhere west of our current position, however we had no idea if we could just trail through a series of west-gates to reach our goal. I doubt it was going to be that easy. The only option we had was to stop and ask for directions at stations, and to see if someone would help us out.

It was deemed a sound plan by the both of us to try the Trading station here in Omicron Lyrae first. The course was plotted as we drifted to our destination, though it seemed someone was in a rush to follow us there. A small ship undocked from the Shipyard not long after us and high-tailed us to the trading station. About halfway there we were hailed by the pilot of that ship.

"Hey, name's Dan Mire. Heard you're going to Argon Prime? I got a proposition. I have a cargo to deliver there, but I don't fancy the idea of going there alone. What do you say about watching each other's six for the journey? I could use any help I could get, and you definitely could use some help especially with that piece of junk you're flying. Well? Of course there is no credits at stake, but for some tips I could try harder to cover your arse in case things get hot, let's say for 500Cr per sector we go through?"

How rude. Even though it wasn’t my ship I was still slightly offended by this remark, however this guy could be our guide. I gave a quick nod to my science officer that understood my intentions.

" Communications channel open, sir."

“Konnichiwa pilot. I'd like to take you up on that offer, if it wasn't for the fact that I would have to withhold your payment for now. I only have a few thousand credits which I will need to make a few purchases once I reach Argon Prime. Once all matters are taken care of I should have enough to repay you. Make no mistakes. The only reason I will agree to this is because I could use the guide.

As a final bit of advice. Don't go insulting everyone's ship as you go. I happen to like the paintjob on this 'wreck' I'm flying.

Lysander out."

” Ah, to hell with you! No need for credits! Just watch my arse not gets fried and that should be enough! I just have to get there, only I have little chance of actually GETTING there on my own! So? We have a deal? I have to get going if I want to get paid for the cargo, and I don't know when there'll be another pilot with the same direction.”

And so the deal was made. We had a guide, he had an escort. Pilot Dan steered his ship towards the West gate and we followed. This was going to be a long trip if we were to believe this guy. There were two possible routes as he explained. A safe one, and a not so very safe one. Of course, the safe route was longer than the not so very safe one. Just our luck. Either way we had to cross the Pirate Street, and if we took the not so very safe path, Xenon sector X347 was in our way as well.

Hell, I had no lust to traverse a Xenon sector in this vessel, nor did Dan, so we decided on the safer route of the two. It would take us through a few more Teladi sectors, then through Split space, through the Pirate Street and into Argon territory. A journey of twenty-one very large, very boring sectors. At least, they would be boring if we’d not run into anyone that would like to murder us. Which was exactly what I was hoping for. I had been shot at enough for at least another week!

So far, so good. Teladi space had been traversed with no thrills. Nothing unusual sighted either. Just the merchants going about their business. But we now had Split space coming up. I never quite trusted the Split race. They like to be aggressive and that could prove to be dangerous, seeing we were flying a pirate ship.

We’re clear of the first few sectors now without any hints of danger. Maybe the Split weren’t quite as aggressive yet now ? Meanwhile Dan was getting on my nerves. He kept messaging me about his schedule. Of course I understood he had to deliver his cargo on time to receive payment, but our ship simply couldn’t go as fast as his “Buster”.

While arriving in “Rhonkhar’s Fire” our guide gives us a choice. From here on out we would have two choices. Going north, avoiding the Pirate Street, as he recalled another route. Or go south and take the initial route. The Pirate route would be faster but more dangerous. The other route would take us through some sectors with nebulae in them. The problem with that then was that he had no maps of that sector, he just ‘knew it’. Since I had no intention of getting stuck in a nebula, we’d risked going the Pirate route. As we were closing in we had to be on our guard. Sensors set to maximum range and the both of us keeping our eyes wide open to spot incoming ships.

Hatikvah’s Faith was clear of pirate activity aside of one roaming band consisting of a ‘Discoverer’ and an ‘Elite’. We steered clear of them and they let us pass without interfering. There were lots of merchants passing through here. In fact, I can’t quite see why this sector would be classified as “Pirate Space”. The next stop would be Nopileos’ Memorial. Here we could get into some real trouble as the Xenon sector X101 was linked to there. Both Xenon and Pirates could be awaiting us on the other side of the gate, though there were quite some ships coming through on our side with no sustained damage. This gave me the courage to pass through.

Once again though, just when you think you’re in the clear, something crops up. In this case a few pirate ships, quickly followed by a complete Paranid armada. The hunted pirate ships were soon destroyed, leaving some spoils of war behind. The Paranid didn’t seem interested in them so I took the ‘liberty’ of collecting the goods. Meanwhile the armada headed back to the gate they came through. They would give us the needed cover!

Traversing this sector was easy with that much support. The Paranid military enjoyed taking out a few more pirate ships and then headed for Xenon space. I first thing I noticed after the Paranid fleet changing course was that our gravidar was showing a lot more ships heading in that direction as well.
To be exact, a Argon fleet and a Boron fleet. Enough ships to completely wipe out a sector filled with A.G.I. ships.

Temptation was large, but I had to keep to my end of the deal. I had to get Dan to Argon Prime and give him protection where needed. We swiftly diverted course and entered Danna’s Chance. We ran into no more trouble after that and safely reached Elena’s Fortune. Argon territory.

Once there the first thing we see is weapons fire. Apparently a Pirate Carrack is assaulting the local Military Outpost here, leaving destruction in it’s wake. The gravidar spotted some more spoils and I decide to close in to pick them up. Not a good idea. Not good at all.

http://i45.tinypic.com/qpi1hc.jpg

Alarms go off as the gravidar spots a ‘Brigantine’ and several escort fighters closing in fast to assist the ‘Carrack’. Just as I decide to turn around and make a run for it, I notice two space suits floating and in the background the ships they just abandoned due to pirate fire.

My science officer made a bold suggestion. We should try to capture the abandoned ships and see what we can do with them. It would save a lot of expenses if we could patch up those ships cheaply and use them for other purposes. We’d just have to steer clear of the pirates that had engaged with the main Argon presence in the sector and hack the computer systems. It wasn’t right, but the pilots were floating around dead in space already anyway. They wouldn’t mind probably!

Dan had taken off already to Argon Prime, leaving us with the directions “West, West, North”. He kept mumbling about that shipment of his. Meanwhile the war raged on leaving several casualties to both parties. Now that the pirates were distracted we made our move. We sped in towards the first ‘Discoverer’ as my partner prepared to exit the ship via the airlock. As I manoeuvred our ship in close she got out and started her work, using the Falcon as a shield for stray weapons fire. It was all over very soon. These ship cores were no big deal compared to the complex encryptions used on the ships we knew. Ashley found her way back on board safely as we were now in the possession of two “Discoverer” scout class ships. The exact same ones we wanted to buy earlier in Omicron Lyrae. She was back on board just in time to witness more fireworks.

http://i45.tinypic.com/205f5t4.jpg

The ‘Brigantine’ was blown up by missile fire.

I gave commands to the 'Discoverers' auto pilots to follow my ship as we continued the journey to our passports. West, West, North we went, and there it was. Argon Prime. We located the Trading Station and docked there, wondering what our next step would be and checking out the items we collected.

Picked up were;
A bunch of different missiles.
Some Energy Cells, 131 units to be exact.
Somehow we were also in the possession of 32 units of Delexian Wheat, some Energy Bolt Chaingun ammunition and a crate of Mass Driver Ammunition.

After a quick price check within our database we found out that as it was right now we didn’t need to sell our Falcon. If we’d sell off the missiles to the Equipment Dock here and the remaining goods to some other local factories, we’d have enough funds -and- two scout ships. We had better waited on our passports before selling off the goods though. Maybe our ‘good will’ of dropping off some live warheads would be welcomed by the Argon authorities.

_____
Update 1/2 for tonight. I will probably write up a bit more but I don't want to keep you people waiting.

The last bit will be up later tonight (1.5 / 2 hours later) with some more information and possible spoilers regarding goals and possible future work.

One thing was really odd though. I have absolutely no idea why those two Discoverers were abandoned. I do not have the Signal Bail Extension installed, yet they were quite damaged, (14 and 24% hull, one with 1 shield, the other without any equipment). I had not fired upon them or anything, but I guess I can see it as some support from the game to me !

A good run so far.

Sometimes I have had an odd ship bail within a battle I had nothing to do with.
Never had two though.Lucky you :!:

I like the introduction of role playing.

If you get around to complex building , to give your ships support or just get some cash flow, without taking up too much room in a sector, drop down to Hollow Infinity and have a word with Norman Fudge.

Captain's log, 20th September 2938

The Falcon I've been following appears to have picked up a buddy soon after leaving the Omicron Lyrae shipyard - good for him, his buddy led him the safer route. The "safer" route included going through Spilt and Pirate-infested space though, which made my attempts at staying undetected quite hard as both pilots were running constant sensor sweeps of the area. It sure seemed like they had something to worry about. A spacefuel or spaceweed shipment perhaps? I did spot an official fuel factory in Nyana's Hideout, and I don't know where that Falcon came from, so anything is a guess right now.
The small company has just entered Elena's Fortune and I'm about to follow through...
-computer, stand by-

-resuming log-
... I've just entered Elena's Fortune, having waited an appropriate amount of time to avoid suspicion and detection upon traversing the wormhole. My sensors are showing high levels of residual radiation, the sign of a major battle. Visual checks show the hulks of a Brigantine-class Destroyer and a Carrack-class Frigate. A long-range sensor scan is showing the pirate Falcon I've been following, though there's no sign of his Buster buddy. Did they have an argument? No matter.

Captain's log, supplemental

I have contacted the trading station manager, who kindly showed me the way to Argon Prime on my map. I have decided to break off the pursuit of the strange pirate Falcon for now, as I have more pressing matters to attend to in Argon Prime. Plus, if the information I was given in Omicron Lyrae is correct, I am going to meet it in Argon Prime anyway. I'm down to my last 500 credits, which ought to be enough to keep me going for a week, two if I were to reduce my shopping to a minimum. Still, my supplies aren't going to last forever. Time to contact the Argon Military.
-computer, suspend log-

-computer, resume log-
I contacted an Argon official aboard the Argon One two hours ago and was told to stand by while the Argon Military is looking for a suitable task for a pilot of my standing. Knowing my luck, I probably will be assigned scout duty in Xenon sectors... Gah, this won't do. The Falcon I've been following for the better part of the previous day finally showed up and docked at the trading station - my gravidar told me it got a bit heavier since I've last seen it, the pilot has probably taken on some loot... poor traders. I was somewhat astonished to also find two scout ships entering the system assigned to the same pilot, currently being flown by their computer. Visual checks showed some serious scorchmarks, meaning they probably are the "booty" of the Falcon pilot. Pirates... the universe would be so much better without them.

-computer, resume log-
Three hours have passed since my last log entry, and still no reply from the Argon. Not even a "we're still looking for a position, you might want to find decent accomodation in the meanwhile". Booking a room aboard the local Trading Station wasn't quite cheap, either, this being the Argon Home World and all. I'm now down to 200 credits, and my earlier estimates are out the airlock. Guess I'll soon be forced to either sell my ship or go scavenging. I've met the two humans from the Falcon in one of the station hallways when I was on my way to my room, they seemed quite busy looking over basic information on the loot they scavenged somewhere. Either the two are completely clueless and won't live to smack me another day, or there's something very, very strange going on. I've put some of the basic computer knowledge I acquired in the Academy into use to tap into the station's camera feeds. If the two head out anywhere, be it the bar or the docking bay, I'll know. For now, it's time to rest.

One pass for all your needs! - 06

Captain’s log;
Earth Stardate 2938
Captured Pirate Falcon

---
Bureaucracy, what a drudge. Stranded on a trading station, filing forms, answering questions.

”How come you do not have a passport, sir?

Think Lysander, think! Quickly now!

”I ehh.. well. It’s kind of a long story but it comes down to the exploding of mine and my fiancé’ s… “

Never in my life had I seen such a foul look in a woman’s eyes. The moment I said ‘fiancé’, miss Malone’s eyes pierced my heart. If looks could kill, I’d be no more alive than those pilot’s who’s ships we’ve ‘borrowed’.

“…ship during a pirate attack with all paper work still in there. We were lucky to be picked up by one of the assaulters. Probably to be sold as slaves, but we could overpower him and nick his ship. The one that got us here in the first place.”

I looked smug. I had just made up a completely credible story in a matter of seconds. Or at least, I thought it was credible. The lady in front of me sincerely doubted my explanation but decided to ask no further.

“Very well then. We will enter the data and file the request for the passport right away. If you would wait for just a little while longer, thank you.”

The woman walked off, back to her desk. As soon as she was out of hearing range, my ‘fiancé’ started breathing fire my way.

“What was that all about! I am under no circumstances -your- fiancé!”

“Look Ashley, I just had to make something up alright? This would be most convincing!”

She didn’t buy it. Just my luck again.

“Just a little while longer” we were on our way again. This time with passports in our hands. I must admit I don’t think the Argons have quite captured the concept of time, as seven hours isn’t a ‘little while longer’ in my book. Not by a long shot.

Another thing I can’t quite stop wondering about is how easy it was to get passports. Surely they’d check up on our names and all. If they did they’d probably come to the conclusion that we’re not in their database whatsoever. But then again, I don’t think that the Argon authorities have a record on all of the Terran population.

Our little project ‘Goodwill’ was more good for us than it was for our Argon brothers. From the missiles alone we earned 315.000 credits at the local Equipment Dock, plus a gained rank on the ladder of bureaucracy.

With some of the recently earned money we purchased maps of the immediate surroundings. As shown there, the sector to the north of us, “Herron’s Nebula” would offer us some factories to sell the Wheat and Energy Cells to.

So, now what will we do ? We were in the possession of a “Falcon”, a “Discoverer” and a “Discoverer Vanguard”, the last two in terrible shape after being shot up by pirates. If we could get these ships back to the USC Narada, the engineering crews could patch them up and prepare them for field duty. Now would also be a good time to report in. It’s been over a day since our last rapport to my number one.

We flew the ship a bit out of the centre of the sector, out of scanning range of most ships and send a transmission on a secure Terran bandwidth. Not realising that anyone familiar with Terran military issue could listen in if they wanted to.

“This is Ryker to USC Narada. Respond please.”

“This is USC Narada. Good to hear from you, Commander. We thought you got lost out there!”

“You wish for too much there old friend. We found ourselves a guide and are currently near Argon Prime. We picked up some passports and made some money. We’ve also been able to pick up two scout class vessels, abandoned during a pirate attack. They are badly damaged though, so we’re going to have to get them to the ship for repairs.

“How are you planning on doing that, commander? If those ships are damaged they can hardly fly back on their own, let alone with just the autopilot. And besides, if someone was to capture those ships they could find our coordinates in the ships computer.”

Drat. He had a point there. Always one step ahead of me, that’s why I made him my first officer.

“Good thinking there. We will come back at that once we’ve found a suitable solution. For now we need to arrange some form of contact between us and the USC. We can’t keep all those civilians on the Narada, it’s too crowded, especially with parts of the ship missing. Hmm, speaking of which. How are the repairs coming along?”

“Repairs are coming along just fine, commander. Saxton has some promising news regarding our main reactor. He says he might be able to get it nearly fully functioning again. He’s checking out the database for any materials that might be found in this era and are compatible with ours…”

One of the issues of time travel is that important discoveries regarding virtually anything just haven’t been made yet. The ships main core is running on N-Anti-Matter. Nividium Anti-matter. Sure, there is Nividium to be found around here, but the technologies are nowhere as advanced to create it’s complete opposite. I doubt people are even aware yet of the possibilities Nividium will someday offer.

“…He might have found a way to make ‘NAM’.”

“That is great news number one. Make it a priority and put most of the technicians you can spare on the job. If we can get but slightly enough energy to power the engines we’d at least not be sitting ducks anymore.

“Roger that, sir. Anything else?

“Well, have there been any incidents that need reporting? And what is the status of our prisoner?”

“We’re questioning the prisoner but he isn’t talking. He is refusing to eat and drink as well, sir. Any suggestions ?”

“Let him rot in his cell. He’s no use to us alive. He might tell all his little friends about the ship. He’s been inside it as well.” I heard beside me.

I was surprised by her reaction. Normally she’d never be so bold, but her reasoning was sound. The last thing we could use was someone ratting us out.

“You heard the woman. If he wants to end it then so be it.”

“Affirmative, sir. Other then that there is nothing to rapport. Unless you count in the odd incident we had on the bridge a few hours earlier.”

“Of course that counts. It happened on the bridge!”

“It really was a minor incident. The ships chaplain came crawling through one of the ventilation shafts. He had apparently been locked up in the chapel after the corridor connecting it to the rest of the ship had been blown away.”

“A chaplain, crawling through an air vent? A chaplain… did we even bring a chaplain? Never mind. Ask the man of what use he can be to us and assign him some new quarters. That will be all for now.”

“Aye aye, Commander. We will await your next rapport. USC Narada out.”

I’m glad that was done. Good news was exchanged from both sides and that was always a good thing. Now back to the issue of the ships. Maybe we could find a transport ship that was capable of docking one or two fighters. If we could get a jumpdrive we can then load the transport up with Ecells and have it jump to the Narada. The only thing stopping that plan? Indeed, bureaucracy. If we weren’t even allowed to purchase a small scout ship, we’d never be allowed to purchase a transport. Not to mention that those transports could maybe cost a small fortune, excluding the jumpdrive.

This sure did give us some food for thought. I made the ship navigate back to Argon Prime to look for our hasty pilot Dan. I still needed to thank him for his duty as tour guide.

Once arrived there I found his ship at the trading station. We docked there as well to get a bit of rest. Tomorrow would bring us more puzzles to solve, and we need to be wide awake to get the wanted results.

Okay. Current status;

1x Falcon
1x Discoverer
1x Discoverer Vanguard.

Wanting to buy a TM to transport the smaller ships around and back to US17,10.

Depending on Olterin and his eaves dropping we might have now someone that can compromise the situation. Yes, I have made it so on purpose to show that I am willing to let the story being guided a bit by community replies :)

I will update my goals with a long term one:
Spoiler
Show
Patching up the USC Narada. Repairing the hull damage and making sure the reactor has enough power to give some juice to the engines in case we need to move her.

--> The Aran would indeed be the perfect ship now in this situation. As soon as the USC Narada is patched up I might script an Aran in to fulfil this role. I won't abuse the ship and do things with it yet, though I do have more plans for it.

The reason I say scripting one in is because at this stage I certainly cannot complete the Goner missions, and even if I could, I would never be able to board the Aran and capture it.
For one ones who read it, drop some comments in a Private Message so we aren't littering the thread with spoiler tags ^^

--

I have also decided on allowing people to apply for Bridge Crew positions. Those persons will have to make an in-character application in a comment here, with a small background, the position you apply for and a reason why to pick you.

Characters that get selected will be used in communications from and to the ship (and in possible future ship 'scenes'). What is expected of the selected people:

* Sometimes write a little bit of text yourself regarding an event your character witnessed. Explain how your character experienced it to create some more depth.
* Make useful suggestions that contribute to 'the greater cause'! Maybe your character can figure out a way to get the USC into believing what happened. Or maybe he/she has a revolutionary idea regarding fleet management. - Just write up a little bit of text. I will most certainly pick it up and add it to the general story, just as I did with "e1team's" piloting offer.

I will add more once I can think of something. Brain is slowly dying due to a lack of sleep, so I think that is a plausible excuse to end this post!

Enjoy!

Edit:

One last small edit, as I just got a plan.

Extra Short term goal:
Spoiler
Show
Collect as many "Engine Components" junk as possible to help repair the Narada's engines. I will later on set a required number to get the engines working again.

Nice idea for a story. Cool way of playing the game and writing it along the way. My only problem is that it is MORE STAR TREK THAN X-UNIVERSE. I can't help but picking up on Trek, BSG, and Stargate references and styles on almost every line you write, and I think that is going too far away from original content.

I too decided to write my own story, and perhaps it may include concepts, but I won't let them affect the story to such an extent. We all draw inspiration and experience from somewhere, but it all depends on how we treat it.

Feel free to look at my posts for a Prologue.

Captain Slamer Forrester sat down in the booth of the little dinner on the free argon trading station in argon prime. He sat there pondering what he was going to do now that he was out of the navy.

After the Death of Swien Luf's he was again out of a job. His ship the Exterminator was turned over to the Boron fleet. It was time again to look for work. As he sat there he unrolled his computer and laid it on the table. He connected to the stations BBS board and mounted his resume.

Race: Argon
Sex: Male
Age: 30
Naval experience: Yes
Rank: Captain

I have worked over the last two years with two extraordinary organizations Merlin Industries II and OmniCorp. I have helped both of these organizations build and train there fleets. I have command the TM Aegis and the M7 Exterminator.

On the Aegis I was in charge everything from fleet resupply and Training to Sector patrols.
On board the Exterminator I was in charge of organizing the wing of 25 fighter assigned to my ship. I also provided Anti fighter support from the frigate itself.

I can serve in any role needed, but I am a specialist in small to medium size capital ship command (TM-M7). I am most interested in a job in a private security force. If needed I can bring a group of 20 men to crew any ship I am given command of. They are all experienced in every aspect of TM - M7 class ships. They have all served with me before.

If you are interested in my services send me a message. Thank you.

"All I can do now is wait and see what happens." He thought to himself.

Captain's log, 21st September 2938

What a day.

I woke up just two hours ago, about to go get my breakfast when a blinking info button on the console connecting my room with my ship on a secure channel caught my attention. Of course, standard Terran Military protocol is to set your ship to track Terran transmissions on all channels when you're not at the helm, and it seems mine has picked up something. Something. I'm still having issues decoding it, as the encryption protocols are far, far beyond anything I've seen, ever. The only thing I could decypher so far was the name of a ship - USC Narada. I ran a check through all Terran records, there is no such ship in existence.

I then checked the camera feeds - the Falcon I've been tracking as well as the two Discoverer models were still docked. Still? I decided to run a check of the camera feed recording. An hour of fast forwarding later, I found something interesting: the Falcon undocked. Crossreferencing the timestamp my ship put on that encrypted message with the time of undocking, I concluded that it's a fair bet that Falcon sent that transmission. What a day indeed.

There are questions I need answered, and fast. Really fast. How on Terra have those two humans gotten their hands on Terran Military codes? And how on Terra did they get their hands on codes that don't even resemble ATF encryption, nevermind standard USC encryption? What is the USC Narada? These might be matters pressing the security of Sol, so I need to act, quickly. Time to find their quarters and get some answers. No, wait, revise that, time to decrypt that transmission and keep a very, very close eye on those two.
-computer, suspend log-

-computer, resume log-
I've been sitting at decyphering the transmission for the past hour, and it seems that my normal decryptor is capable of recovering at least some of it. I'm uploading the results to my console right now... Here they are:

-“This is Ryker to USC Narada. Respond please.”
-“This is USC Narada. Good to hear from you, Commander. *static*”
-“*static* near Argon Prime. We picked up some passports and made some money. *static* two scout class vessels, *static* a pirate attack. They are badly damaged though, so we’re *static* ship for repairs.
-“*static* damaged they can hardly fly *static* if someone was to capture *static* our coordinates in the ships computer.”
-“*static* some form of contact between us and the USC. *static* on the Narada *static* parts of the ship missing *static* repairs coming along?”
-“*static* commander *static* main reactor *static* nearly fully functioning again *static* database *static* this era and are compatible with ours *static*”
-“*static* ‘NAM’.”
-“*static* a priority *static* slightly enough energy to power the engines we’d at least not be sitting ducks anymore."
-“*static*"
-"*static* what is the status of our prisoner?”
-"*static* he isn’t talking. He is refusing to eat and drink as well, sir. Any suggestions?”
-“Let him rot in his cell. He’s no use to us alive *static* about the ship. He’s been inside it as well.”
Hmm, that was the woman speaking, wasn't it?
-“*static* he wants to end it then so be it.”
-“*static* your next rapport. USC Narada out.”

I'm afraid my computer can't do any better than that. I'd have to get to an ATF facility and run it through their best equipment if I were to decode the rest of it - no time for that. From what I heard, I can assume that they are indeed somehow involved with the pirates - though not directly. Then there's a prisoner. Who is he? Did he give them the codes? Unlikely, by the sound of that bit of the communication. There's also that bit about 'NAM' - a weapon? Then there's the part about "this era" - what do they mean? "Compatible with ours"? More questions, and almost no answers.

Hmm... time to sum up what I know and what I don't know about these people.
What I (seem to) know:
-They are human
-They are somehow involved with pirates
-The man's name is Ryker, rank of Commander
-They want to avoid detection and to hide the "USC Narada" for some reason
-They appear to be using some heavily modified Terran software

What I don't know:
-Are they a danger to Sol?
-What is the "USC Narada"?
-What is "NAM"?
-Who is their prisoner?
-Why don't they know basic information about many things?
-Are they pirates themselves?
-Why didn't they have an ID card back on Omicron Lyrae?

Well... going by the above, my duty as a Terran is to investigate. I have a gut feeling that I'll lose their track if I linger any longer. Desperate times call for desperate measures. "NAM" could be short for any kind of weapon involving anti-matter, and the Commonwealth doesn't have that kind of technology. Even we are still in our first stages of working with anti-matter, as any mistake might lead to total annihilation of a rather large piece of matter, for example, Terra. No, there is no other way. This might be a gamble, but I see myself forced to break the laws here.
-computer, end log entry-

Dara geared up, putting on her Terran uniform, which doubled as a lightweight armor to protect the wearer against minor health hazards. She took her sidearm out of the locker, along with a knife and two M/AM grenades. I hope I won't be needing those, she thought. She also strapped her EMP rifle onto her back (this one I'll need to get into their room). Two minutes and fifty three seconds later, an explosion shook the Trading Station.

"Commander Ryker, we need to talk" Dara said, pointing her sidearm straight at the two.

tasev1 wrote:Nice idea for a story. Cool way of playing the game and writing it along the way. My only problem is that it is MORE STAR TREK THAN X-UNIVERSE. I can't help but picking up on Trek, BSG, and Stargate references and styles on almost every line you write, and I think that is going too far away from original content.
You do have a point regarding the amount of Trek writing here. The fact of the matter is though that I think of Star Trek as a fine example of how a ship should be run. If you want to go by the X-Universe rules, the main character could pilot, engage in combat, command the fleet and wipe out a whole Xenon sector in a M2 on his own, at the same time.

On a side note, I've never seen any BSG and Stargate, and only a minimal amount of Star Trek episodes. (have seen the ST films though)

Also, the name "Ryker" was a complete coincidence, if you are referring to ST-TNG.

My use of "number one" as a name for a first officer may or not may be a direct reference to Picard/Riker but has more to do with me not having a name yet as I am planning to let the first officer be played by another person on these boards. Again though, 'Number One' is a name used in other series/films than Star Trek and is even used in our real world.

As a final -save my hide- I have this to say:

- First and foremost it's my story :D
- When writing a story as this, it's hard to stay within the boundaries of the X-verse. Sure, it is a very solid backbone and offers enough information to base a story on, but the interaction between characters can't be defined by just the X-verse.

Don't think I am taking a piss at you. I am quite sure other people think the same was as you do and this gives me a good opportunity to explain my views on the matter :)

"What the..." Dan thought to himself. The glass of "Fuel" he orderd started to dance on the table, a shock wave hit the station and a few sezuras later all lights went red.

"Warning! Explosion detected! Level 4, Section 19! Emergency personnel dispatched! All civilians should remain calm!" station computer announced.

"That's can't be good! I have to get the hell out of here! Just a few stazuras ago I made it safe through the Pirate Alley and now I'm gonna die HERE??? That's not gonna happen! Not today!"

"Hey! What about the payment for the drink?!!" shouted the bartender as Dan rushed out from the bar. "What about some tips?!!"

Dan got to the main elevator which would get him to the main hangar. A group of security officers ran past him. "Probably heading to the accident scene" he thought. The elevator has arrived, Dan rushed in and pressed a button with a hangar sign on it.
He was runnning to his ship when he saw the ship that was his escort and beside it were three persons, one pointing a gun at the other two.
"Damn, that's the guy whom I helped to get here!"

Dan sneaked closer and hid himself behind another ship.
"Dan you're a crazy son of the agnu!" he thought to himself rushing towards the the three. The armed person turned around and pointed the gun at him. "I guess I'm gonna die today anyway" Dan thought.
But the next moment the male that was kept hostage knocked the armed woman down.
"Darn me! That was too close" Dan breathed out. "Now you guys owe me a great deal, I'm just few credits away from buying my own factory and hope to receive some investments on your part! Now let's get the hell out of here, we don't want to be here when security arrives!"

Dara Djunai - 07

Captain’s log;
Earth Stardate 2938
Trading Station – Argon Prime

---
What is it with people always trying to keep me from sleeping. First my science officer wouldn’t shut up about the ‘fiancé’ incident earlier that day. She kept me awake for a good two hours with her ranting. When I did finally fell asleep someone thought it might be funny to blow up the door to our room and take us hostage at gunpoint.

Surprisingly it was another she. She barged into my room after the door was blown.

"Commander Ryker, we need to talk.”

Still half asleep as I was I tried to be funny.

“You know, you could just have knocked. Who are you anyway, and what do you want?”

“Who I am is of no importance. Now, get out of bed, grab your belongings. We’re heading to the hangar bay! On the double!”

“Now wait just a second there! Who the hell do you think you are!”

Yes. Ashley was still in a bad mood. This -Terran- woman had obviously picked the wrong moment to hold us hostage. But then again, we weren’t in a position to question her motives. She was the one holding a weapon, not us.

“Keep it down you. We’re in enough trouble as it is.” I nudged at my officer.

“What are you waiting for! Hurry up! Argon security will be here in a few moments and I do not plan to stick around and wait for them. So either you pack your things and leave, or we’re going without them!”

She surely was agitated as well, but I had no intentions to forget my passport right now and having to go through that whole procedure again. We quickly gathered the few belongings we had and left for the hangar bay. The Terran woman not saying a single word and keeping her sidearm pointed at us.

Upon reaching the hangar bay we stopped at our Falcon. I could see the Dan’s ‘Buster’ and a couple of unknown ships. One though struck me as early Terran design. It must have been our captors ship.

http://i47.tinypic.com/2q2k8rl.jpg

The Terran woman, that had finally revealed her name to be “Dara” gave a few commands to her ship, making it ready to follow us in the Falcon. But just as we were about to enter our vessel a man came charging towards us, distracting Dara.

There was no hesitation, and more concerning, no thinking involving my next action. I grabbed Dara’s arm and worked her to the ground. Miss Malone quickly reaching down, taking away the guns and other equipment Dara was carrying with her. When I looked back up I saw Dan’s face.

“Darn me! That was too close. Now you guys owe me a great deal, I'm just few credits away from buying my own factory and hope to receive some investments on your part! Now let's get the hell out of here, we don't want to be here when security arrives!"

Typical Dan behaviour. He just saved us and is already talking about credits again. Nevertheless he had a point. We had to get out of here before security would find us. Dan ran to his ship while we gave our passenger a spot in the cabin of the Falcon. I’d have loved to stash her away in the cargo hold, but she wouldn’t survive the trip that way.

My companion took the helm and I kept an eye at Dara. The three ships undocked and flew towards the Ore Belt. The ‘Discoverers’ were send to dock at the trading station there as well.

It was time to get a room and listen to what our new ‘friend’ had to say for herself. Dan told us he had some business to attend to and would contact us as soon as he was done. This would hopefully give us enough time for an interrogation on our behalf.

“Who are you, what were you thinking and what do you know!.”

“Like I said my name is Dara and all I know is that you are a threat to our Solar System!”

“Now hold on there missy. I think you’ve made some wrong assumptions on whatever information you have, but we are certainly not a threat to SOL. In case you hadn’t noticed, we’re human as well.

“You’re connected with pirates! You’re flying a pirate ship and were carrying a huge load of missiles! What have you done with them!?”

“Flying a pirate ship, yes. Connected to the pirates? Not by a long shot. We were ambushed by pirates and taken onboard that ‘Falcon’. We managed to overthrow the pilot and steal the ship, seeing as our own vessel was destroyed. Regarding the missiles, they were spoils of war, left behind in wreckages. We simply picked them up and sold them at the Equipment Dock back at ‘Prime for some spare cash.”

The expression on Dara’s face was vague. She was having trouble believing us after hearing parts of the transmission to the Narada, but she wasn’t giving in. A short moment later miss Malone entered the room, waving around a reader while happily saying “Got it.”

“Ah, good. In case you’re wondering what this is. It’s the log from your ship. Seeing you are Terran military you’re bound to keep a log.”

This was troubling. Apparently she was able to pick up the transmission and deciphered it somewhat. That solved the issue of her knowing my name and ranking. Other then that, her assumptions regarding us gave me a good laugh. As it was right now, she had tracked us from Omicron Lyrae all the way to Argon Prime. Curious one that is, just to find out why two people didn’t have a passport. I’ve added her logs to ours, so we could send them to the Narada.

“So, you’ve managed to pick up our communications and decipher them partially. I can now see why you assumed we were a threat to SOL. I can assure you though that we have no intention to harm anyone.”

I gave a quick look to my officer and she nodded nervously.

“To show you we mean no harm I’m going to answer a few of your questions. I cannot promise I will answer them all. Some I don’t even have an answer to myself, and some things will have to remain our little secret for now.”

Dara nodded slowly, feeling slightly more relaxed.

“Okay, let’s start with the questions from your log shall we?

-Are we a danger to SOL?

I’ve already answered that one. No.

-What is the "USC Narada”?

That is my ship. We’re ehm.. stranded, if you will. The reason because it’s not on standard military files is because it’s a classified project.

-What is "NAM"?

Your assumption regarding Anti-Matter is correct. It’s just the abbreviation for “Nividium-Anti-Matter”. The trail of thoughts regarding it being a possible weapon is false however. It’s an energy source on which our ship runs.

-Who is our prisoner?

Hmm, a tricky one. Let’s just say it’s the pilot of the Falcon we’re flying.

-Why don't we know basic information about many things?

We’re soldiers, not merchants. I’ve never interested myself for economics.

-Are we pirates?

I’ve already answered this one. No, we are not.

-Why didn't we have an ID card back in Omicron Lyrae?

We’ve also already explained this one.

Now just stay still and seated. Think up some more questions while the two of us are going to discuss a few minor things first. “

My science officer and I left the room and discussed briefly on how to handle this situation. There would be a few possible outcomes.

- Dara could be a smart girl and figure out on her own we’re not from ‘now’.
- We tell her everything regarding our accident and adopting her into our crew.
- She’d end up having an ‘accident’ because we really can’t have people with this much knowledge.

Option three was out of the question. We were not here to murder everyone we run into. We were hoping for option one, but it would probably end up being number two. It’s just the way things go, you know?

We went back into the room but remained silent. Dara had surprisingly done as asked and had remained seated. I got a comforting nod from my partner as I asked the following.

“Think your next few words through very good. I am going to ask you a question and your response to it will influence the way the rest of this conversation goes and how you will end up. Do you understand me?”

The human girl nodded again and took a deep breath.

“Very well then. Have you made up your mind on who we are and what we are doing here?”

Dara remained silent for just a bit longer before replying. When she spoke it was rather sarcastic, but she had no idea how right she was.

“Well, I think that you are not from this time, that your ship has the ability to travel through time and that you are now stranded here because something went wrong with the jump. You are also trying not to be discovered.”

I raised an eyebrow and looked at my companion who had the same surprised expression on her face.

“That is quite impressive. Nearly correct on all assumptions this time, aside of one minor thing.”

Now it was Dara’s time to look surprised. Could it be that they were really from the future, or were they simply toying with her due to the sarcastic tone she spoke with?

“Our ship cannot travel through time, but there was an.. accident.. that caused us to end up here. The rest is all true.”

“And you think this is funny? Dara exclaimed. “Because I don’t find you humouring me something to laugh about at all!”

“I told you she wouldn’t believe us Lysander? Now what are we going to do?

“That’s easy. We’re going to take her to the Narada. She knows too much to walk freely. Besides, we could use someone that knows more of this era and that is -willing- to help us.”

“That is just kidnapping! You can’t do this! Wait, what are you doi…”

Poor Dara would be silent for the rest of the journey back to the Narada. We had to sedate her so we could get her in a space suit. She could then gently rest in our cargo bay during the trip. Another positive effect of her being out cold was that she had no idea where we were going.

The convoy of four ships undocked from the trading station and headed back to US19,10. I tried to contact Dan about our departure but he was nowhere to be found. That didn’t matter much, because I doubted it was the last we were going to see of him anyway.

In a moment of brightness we downloaded the maps from the two ‘Discoverers’ and the Terran ‘Rapier’ onto the computer of the ‘Falcon’. We now had quite a complete map of the region and found the ‘safe-safe’ route Dan had suggested, through the nebula sectors, which would now give us the much needed cover to get some distance between us and Argon space. The reason why? Just as we departed and headed for Argon Prime we picked up a transmission.

“This is Argon One requesting contact with Dara Djunai. We have reviewed your message and would like to convey our response in person. Please contact us as soon as possible.”

Had Dara contacted the Argon Military regarding her suspicions about us and were they looking for more information? We had to get out quickly.

As for Dara herself. The next thing she knew, she found herself on a comfortable bed in some quarters onboard the Narada, although she had no idea where she was at that time.

______
I've send the ships back to US19,10 and added a basic Rapier with 1 EMPC and 2x 1MJ shields to my 'fleet'.

Also, despite my thinking of waiting with adding a physical 'Narada', I went ahead and scripted in an Aran to act as 'Home Base'. (Why an Aran, because it looks nothing like all of the normal ships in the game as it is, plus it will have some added features that will be used in the future.) The ship won't be able to fly, has no weapons and minimal shields (1x 200 MJ) which will be upgraded in the near future.

The USC Narada in US19,10, in between the asteroids.

The 'Fleet' as it is now. 4 ships.

Dan was standing in the middle of the Trading Station hangar.
"They left... Saving them was stupid of me. Just about the time I wanna open a new page, set up shop and lay low. But nooo... I guess that Teladi greed is contagious after all. For an opportunity to earn a few credits, I risk my life, my reputation and now all of the Argon Federal Security is probably heading here. Acts of terror on board federal stations is not something they tend to forgive. And now that my 'friends' are gone I'm the only suspect left available. Federal stations are swarming with security cameras and my face is probably in all police databases already!"
A large sliding door opened in the hangar wall, revealing a just landed ship. It was a Discoverer class scout ship with violet stripes on it's sides.
"Yea, violet stripes..."
Discoverer's pilot made it out of the cockpit and took his helmet off.
"Sir? Your ID please, sir."
"That's it" Thought Dan while taking out his ID card...

I don't know if I should put this here or PM everyone of you writers, but what a grand story :D. This is even better than star wars :o . OK maybe going a bit overboard with the last remark but still quite good and very entertaining.

"Sit down please." The Argon Federal Security officer pointed to a chair. The room was dark with only a chair, a table and a single neon light in the ceiling.
"So, Dan Mire, 25 yazuras old, freelance trader, currently working for Terracorp. Such a nice profile. Why? Why do you want to fill it with entries about acts of terror on board federal stations?"
"I didn't!.. I had no idea!.. I have nothing to do with the explosion!"
"Yea... Look here" the officer took out his PDA and pressed a "Play" button. On the screen Dan saw himself running to the elevator, now the hangar and again he, Dan, and these three...
"If it wasn't you, why you made a run for it sezuras after the explosion?"
"I wanted to save my hide that's all..."
"And these three, who are they?"
"Some people? The two here, I helped them with directions and they were my escort... It was mutual help, you know..."
"And you haven't noticed they fly a pirate ship?"
"Nothing special about it, many pilots have them these days, and they told me they have scavenged it or something like that. Why should I care, as long as I have my arse covered, and for free?"
"Alright. Then who's the third one?"
"I don't know her. But I think she tried to kidnap these two and kill me when I tried to help them."
"I see you're good at making friends. Two guys you don't really know, and you try to save their lives..."
"It was all about credits!!! I swear!"

"What do you think of him?"
"I think he's telling the truth about not having a connection to the explosion and about not knowing the third one."
"What should we do with him?"
"His friends are interesting persons. One moment this Dara Djunai wants to apply to Argon Federal Service and the other she blows a federal station apart. We do not want to make hasty decisions as we do not want a war with Terrans, a war we will not win. We need answers. Install a tracking device on his ship and release him. Tell him... Tell him nothing. Just tell him to get the hell out of here and we'll see what he'll do."

"That was strange" Dan thought to himself switching his ship's systems on.
"In any case I have to find this Ryke (or whatever his name was)."

Code: Select all

...Several hours later, inside a room aboard the 'Narada'...
Lysander Ryker. Commander of the USC Narada. Stranded in our time because of an accident? Dara was still rolling the idea over in her mind. And if he's not lying? How did he... they, end up here and now? What kind of an accident could possibly... Hmm. Black holes warp spacetime, don't they? I wonder...

Dara went over to the window and took a look out at the stars, as she'd done so many times to calm herself down.

Think, Dara, think. If your assumptions were wrong, and they were pirates, would they have provided you with such comfortable quarters? Would they have left you alive, for that matter? With this thought, she glanced at the comfortable, though still spartan bed. No you fool, you'd be one very dead and frozen corpse floating somewhere in space. Which you aren't. OK. He told you to think of some more questions, so think!

Dara was now pacing the room with a frown on her face.

...Hmm. Let's see. Did the accident involve AGI? - Why AGI, he might ask... well, the Commonwealth wouldn't dare attack Sol... Did the accident involve a singularity? Am I on the 'Narada' right now? Of course I am, where else would I be? Well, you could be aboard a pirate station, you know...

She took a closer look at the floor.

...No, definitely not a pirate station. Far too tidy, and the alloy doesn't look like anything the Commonwealth uses. Ok, so yes, I'm most probably on the 'Narada'. Now... what question would have me believe him? I need something special... Something... ahh yes. Favorite place, that's it. If they are from the future, and if he's from Sol, surely he'll name a location on Earth.

Dara took notice of her reflection in the window, somewhat surprised she did.

Oh, I look like a mess! And yes you fool, I know I'm the one to blame for it! What was I thinking, blowing that door up? That was a waste of a perfectly good M/AM grenade! Now, let's try and make the best out of it...

... Surely, they wouldn't have let me have a room with a computer terminal? Didn't think so. But they must have some sort of air circulation tubes... ahh yes, there they are. A bit small for my taste, but I might just fit through.

She glanced back at the bed and then the window.

And what good would escaping this room do? I don't know the ship's layout, I'm not armed, I don't have a clue where we are. Well, for one, I might get access to a computer terminal and find out where I am for good. And if I really am on the 'Narada', I'd be able to confirm his story...

She combed her long dark-red hair with her hands to a somewhat better state.

...Well, let's call the 'ventilation shaft plan' Plan B. Plan A remains to wait here and talk. I rushed too many things on this already.

She looked deep into her reflection's grey eyes.

...Yes, definitely going to stay here and talk. For now. And what am I going to do if he's not lying? Judging by what happened until now, I won't be able to just walk off like that. And I kind of blew up all the trust I might've gained with that grenade of mine - Brilliant move, that! - so offering my help is probably going to hit a brick wall. Worth a try though - at least I would gain access to some ship systems, and later on, maybe a ship.

Dara sat down on the bed again.

...I should've shot the interloper at once, the gun *was* set to stun, y'know... then the situation might've been different, oh so different... For one... I... wouldn't... be...

She fell asleep again.

"Well, well, if it'sss not my friend Dan!"
"You got yourself a nice station here, Heleos. Don't afraid to get caught?"
"No we have an agreement withss local policsse. We pay them 10% of our profitssss and they leave ussss alone. And you, how you are doing? How isss the conssstruction of your promisssed Dissstillery going on?"
"It is just what I wanted to talk to you about. One particular person owes me some credits... Well, he owes me his life too, actually... But it is of no importance to me anymore. What IS important is a passenger he took with him. A girl. Now, she worth a lot! The whole AFS is after her, as she tried to blow a federal station up, and I bet they'll pay very well for her head, and even more for her whole body... With the head... And I have an idea. What do you say? You help me find them. I get the girl to the authorities, you get all the bounty and provide me with the remaining credits I lack to build the station."
"I sssmell profitsss! I'm in. Tell me more."
"Well, all I know is that they're flying a captured pirate Falcon. They also have an escort of two Discoverer class scout ships and one M5 class ship I didn't really recognize, but computer suggests it's of Terran design. First I met them at Omycron."
"We will sssee into that, my friend. I will contact you. Meanwhile, would you like to run a cargo for me?.."

"Sir, we have intercepted a communication to Dan Mire's ship. His pirate associates have found the runaways and tracked them to Maelstrom system, but lost them in the nebulae."
"Maelstrom... Send a M6 to scout the area. No escorts, only one ship. We don't want to draw attention. Let it be piloted by our best and most trusted captain and give him a squad of marines in case things go wrong."
"We happen have just the suitable pilot for the task. The orders?"
"Scout the area, find this Dara person, and I would also be happy to chat with her two friends. Do not engage under any circumstances..."

"...Use weapons only for self defense, understood?"
"Aye sir! Scout the area, find their base of operations, board and capture the primary objective, bring her safely back!"

"What could possibly one girl do that the AFS is is after her?" Haris Ryuk thought to himself.
"All crew on board sir, we're good to go."
"Good. Flight control, undock us now."
"This is flight control to 'Star Glider', undocking now, have a safe journey."

'Star Glider', a Centaur class corvette, cleared the federal shipyard docking nod and fired her engines. Upon reaching 10km mark away from the station she disappeared in a bright flash as she activated her jump drive.

"What about this Dan Mire sir?"
"We have no use of him any longer. Make him quite, I don't want him to spoil everything..."

Haris Ryuk - captain of Federal Special Forces
Assignment - Xenon sector 101 patrol and interception duties
Current Assignment - Classified
Current Ship - Centaur class corvette
