There isn't actually any signal that the hotkey has worked when selecting a group number. If you've got the hotkey set in the contol options then it will work.

The best way I've found to see if the hotkeys are actually working is to open your property menu and scroll down to the ships you're giving orders to. You'll see their commands change when the hotkey works.

bare in mind that some of the hotkeys require you to have targeted something first.

I can't seem to figure out how to use the group system.

Uhh what i mean is, how to accurately add and remove ships from groups. I can never get the ships i want and then i get ships i don't what.
