Okey I went to start new game, galaxy editor, then I made some changes to a sector (no adding sectors just editing planets and such)!

How do I save this progress??

Go to the debug menu (press numpad enter) Select "set galaxy map file name" and change the name to whatever you like. Then select "Export Galaxy". The file will be located in maps folder (unless you changed that).

As I said go to the debug menu (press numpad enter)

There is a debug menu where you find the options I mentioned before.

Also gain, slower:

1. Close all menus.
2. In flight press the enter key in the NUMPAD (not the other one!)
3. Then you should get a menu like this
[ external image ]

4. Move to right most menu using the arrow keys until you see this
[ external image ]
5. Here you rename your map file
6. Here you export your map file

Hope that clarifies things.

With Jobs.txt and JobWings.txt

These are located in the Types folder. I think you need to rename them to Jobs.yourmap.txt and JobWings.yourmap.txt, but I'm not 100% sure, as I did not mess around with those yet. (and there is a good reason for that too  )

For the jobs files, the first thing you will need to do is extract them from the cat using Doubleshadows mod manager.

Start at the highest cat and work down through the numbers untill you find the latest versions (cant remember off hand which cats they are in).

Once extracted rename as Ketraar has said, then drop them into your root folder in a folder named 'types' if you dont have a folder named types just create one.

To get them to work, while you are testing in game, create a 'player init script' and start your game as a custom start.

The player init script will also need to be named the same as your galaxy. EG galaxy.(your name).initplayership

Remember the files are case sensitive, so your map, jobs/wings/init script will all need your map name in them.

If you look back through this thread you will see an example of a player init script.

EDIT
forgot to say that no traffic will appear in the galaxy editor as the engine wont load it.

Its not clear to me how I can make the game load the map I made, so I can play it. Has it something to do with this?

Thraxwhirl wrote:Ooh, hang on.

Think I've cracked it.

The x_universe.xml file is the game's default one, which it stores in the X3 Reunion/Maps foler, isn't it? Now, it seems that if I "Export to X3_Universe", I then simply have to delete the map in the Mod's .cat file, and "add" from the game's X3_universe file. :)

Certainly, the changes are now showing up in Doubleshadow's Galaxy Editor, which is what matters.

But it leaves me with one important question:

What about XFP's .dat file? Will there be a map that needs replacing in there too?

I don't seem to be able to load .dat files. With .cat ones, I just double-click them, and it opens a window with the list of all the subfolders within the .cat...

...but I can't seem to find how to get .dats to open the same way. :?
But I cant find the x_universe.xml or the x3_universe.xml anywhere on my computer. In the map directory there is only the map I made. Which does not show up when I start the game.

So please, if anyone can tell me step by step what to do to load my map as default map, I would be very happy! :)

Mind: I'm using the vanilla map to practice. I copied the whole map and try to make some small changes. Than I would like to test them in a real game, without destroying the original map, but with all the space traffic of the original map loaded.

The x3 map is in the 5 cat/dat the 200 patch is in the 8 or 9 cat/dat.

If you did not make new sector's or gates then you can put your map as a fake patch or as a mod.
How to do that.

If you have created new gates/sector's then go here.

All trafic have to do with the job and jobwings files
not with the map.

That is the link to the script/galaxy editor. I have it, but I don't see an option to extract and compile cat/dat files to/from xml. :?

There are 2 ways to load your map as default, this will depend on what you are aiming for though.

Rename your map to x3_universe and place it in a cat, this will allow you to play your map as the stock Egosoft map, if you place it into an Egosoft cat, then you will need to make a backup of the originol map, in case you want to go back to the official map.

The other way is to make a custom start when starting a new game.
There is information in this topic on how to make custom starts, you will need to remember though, the post on the galaxy init script can not be copied and pasted, it has to be written in the script editor.

Ok, thanks a lot! :D
I replaced the map in 05.cat, and it works fine! But it took several attempts to get it replaced with the modmanager. It does not replace x3_universe.pck by highlighting it, but messes it up either outside the map directory, or by saving it as xml file instead of pck file. Had to change this manually.

Am I right a changed map only shows up in a new game?

You should not mess with 1 to 9 cat/dat only to extract them... Create a new cat/dat.

remenber to put your xlm map in it's folder maps\x3_universe, then just drag and drop it into your mod in the x3 editor.

Yes you need to start new game to get the map to work.

Remenber also that if you have created new sectors and gates you need to work on the t\440001 and the objects\cut\bod 00749
