Adding an option to the poll when people have already voted (and therefore had a different set of options to select from) isn't allowed because it completely defeats the point of the poll in the first place.

Generally I like to keep X games single player, mainly because I want to be all powerful, and don't want someone with more time on their hands to come along a whip my ass for no reason and ruin my game.

However recently I have swung round to the idea of X over a LAN, say maybe up to 4 players. You see me and my housemate both play X3, we both generally play it at the same time. He's still very new to the game and so far owns no ships other than the two he started with. And I think it would be great fun if we could play the game in a shared persistant universe, so that if he had a spot of bother with the plot or found himself in a fight while one of his stations was being attacked I could jump my titan in and save the day and vice-versa.

Also it would just be cool for you and a friend to amass a small armada and then go on a joint mission to wipe out a xenon sector, maybe laugh about who lost more ships etc.

So in short I say LAN-capable, failing that single-player only

Thanks for adding "Single Player" to the poll. Other wise I would have had to post > none of the above.

I would settle for a X3: The Arena at this time anyway....

which basicly would be single sector divided to multiple "arenas", no GOD or npc activity at all, one space station where you can change/equipt your ship (freely or maybe with some sort of points?)

and ofcourse the event would be serious fighting usually 1on1 but some huge events could be like last man standing or such.

I would love to put my money where my mouth is every now and then against fellow X3 players.

and when THIS works like a charm then it could be time to thing about going bigger scale.

ofcourse this would probably be more easily done as a mod to another space sim than by modifying X3 it self.

I would LOVE a multiplayer X4. Admittedly, the problem of the SETA would have to be overcome - can't have everyone's time being accelerated everytime one person uses it. Perhaps then what they did in freelancer - Cruise Engines. Anywho, it'd be awesome for roleplay, what with the ability to own stations and such..clans could ACTUALLY take over entire sectors, or even areas of the universe. Real wars would take place as people fight for their land! Naturally, there could be a single player option too - so everyone could choose whether to go online or not, it'd be up to them!

I think that it would be simply awesome..

This is already done in EVE Online. Why not go play that instead? At least, you'll be able to see what X would have to morph to for MMO play.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

X4 is a journey, not a destination. Have fun on your travels.

An easy way to fix SETA in mulitplayer, would be to remove it entirely. But that's just the opinion of a player that doesn't use it. :)

No SETA use makes for very relaxed gaming imo. Set autopilot to dock somewhere. This gives you time to grab a beer, a meal...etc. :D

I haven't bought SETA for my ships in a number of restarts now. I don't miss it.

i think that the best or only way that a multiplayer game like the X games could be done would have to be like what the battlefield games are.

you dont build an empire or wait for money or use SETA. you start off in an M5 and you work your way up to a M2 or M1. the game would have to be pure battles, no building. the SETA usage would be the thing that screws everything up.

so basically pick a sector or a few different sectors to battle in then you get thrown into the game via out of a M1. you get points for blowing stuff up or dealing damage. if you get hull damage you have to dock back at your "home ship" use your points to repair and set out again.

i really dont see any other way a multiplayer X game could be accomplished.
You know you have had enough when you dock at a pirate base and toss a couple bucks at the monitor...

EVE:

Charges monthly, My X4 makes no mention of this - I imagine it'd be kinda lame, who'd $ 131.40 a year for 1 computer game ?! I spend that much money IN TOTAL on computer games in a year..

Has no single player, My X4 would - some people are in it just for the storyline, some arent.

But I see your point, yes, it would be most similar to what EVE is trying to do.[/quote]

Before I start I apologise if any of my earlier posts were too strong...I dont remember cos i was a bit tipsy :)

That being said theres a few more points I'd like to make.

1) This forum is filled with dedicated X-Game fans, Fans of its current format. A poll on this scale is extremely misleading, how many people would like to see x-online dont come here because they have moved on?

2) EVE online, How many people who love EVE - now getting old, would love to play x-online? Many is my guess as the space online sims out there are extremely few. Also how many people left the X games to join EVE because X isnt online? Were just one big space community among most of the space games out there.

3) Although weve had word from the makers that X in its current format wouldnt work online, I consider that a plus not a negative, of course it would have to morph into something else. It would need to adapt to be playable online, but as long as it was the X universe the imagination (or lack thereof)is the only thing keeping it offline..

And finally, the price per month? If you work it out you wouldnt need any other games and prolly save money over a year..

The idea of having one of my monitors display sector map, another displaying my property and the center displaying the normal cockpit view just rocks.

although, i WOULD have to seriously re-engineer my chair.

don't want multiplayer, though....

(still make it adult, though :P )

I..couldn't..possibly...eat...another..slice....of....pizza -- have we docked yet?

& I want my multi-screen capability (back).

Voted for single-player AND multi-screen, but with an option for multiplayer (and LAN), but
an arena sounds good, + could be OK on a console as well :)

I think a lot of people are somewhat threatened (rightfully so) by the idea of multiplayer because it could reduce the quality of the single player game. But I voted for LAN for precisely this reason:

I would like to see X4 designed for the single player audience, but with a simple LAN option. When I first got X3, my roommates' first questions were "can we play that over our LAN?" And I wanted to reply "Why not?" It wouldn't take any sort of special treatment, just allow multiple players to interact in the same universe via LAN. The simple solution would be to use a server/client relationship where most of the computation was handled by the server and data was passed on request alone. That wouldn't require any sort of reduction in AI ship count or complexity, either. The bandwidth requirement would be quite low, actually.

There is (was?) a post in the scripts and modding thread the other day on this topic, essentially you would combine the AI Competitors AL Plugin with the Remote Access script and just have the client machines run their empires from within their own copies of X4 or some other GUI. It wouldn't be that hard to set up, and it could be quite fun to actually play X with friends.

Regarding SETA, the solution is actually quite simple. Make it a configurable option when starting a LAN-able game, much like the "cannon time" option in Rise of Nations (or was it AoE 3?). Perhaps you can't use it, or maybe only once per game hour, or twice and only for up to 30 seconds at a time, or only when everyone has SETA enabled, or whatever. Just make it configurable, or if that is too complex, simply remove it from LAN capable games, but if the final option were chosen, I'd highly recommend an "Afterburner" ware be vanilla.

I guess in the end, I'm just arguing for the choice to play via LAN (or general internet access, if you're a masochist) with a small number of friends. It was previously mentioned that Warcrafts 1/2/3 were nothing like WoW, but that isn't exactly the comparison which should be drawn. Warcraft 1/2/3 were multiplayer games, just not massively so. And I'd like the same option for X, because a human is a much better adversary and makes you have to really think about what you're doing so much more than a computer ever can.

I just think that people on this forum seem to think that multiplayer = massively multiplayer, when a pretty decent number of people who would like multiplayer (like me!) just want to be able to LAN with 2 or 3 of my roommates. And LAN mode wouldn't require much more work at all, especially when compared to the amount of work entailed in making an entire X game.
