I love that highway concept. It reminds me of Freelancer. On the other hand I somehow miss the traffic from X³ in some sectors and some features. A combination would be just perfect. Oh, and one thing: please bring back the ship models from X³. They were awesome and I miss them badly. They were iconic! Just think of the various Argon M3 versions.
I did not like the highways because I did not find a logical explanation of physics. I do understand that we operate in science fiction but there are borders. Jumpdrive in my view is possible - time-space change (as well as jumpgates). ETA is very possible (you can imagine that you are going into hybernation - falling into induced sleep). Gliding is well possible. But highways? It destroys the game feeling especially when they intoduce the mini-game.
One can say that the highways are the paths of moving particles (plasma, photons, etc.) but then it will require enormous amount of energy to create it, much more than simply to move a ship (so to say it will not be practical to create it). In X3 you have all sort of ships moving around and it was cool.

My biggest problems with the Highways are:

1) I don't understand the routing, it's seems almost random, certainly not any sort of atttempt at efficiency.

2) Since they pass through the middle of zones it's all too easy to fall into them in the middle of a dog-fight with enemies coming out of them, I really with they required some sort of activator to use.

I hate the highways! I want my freedom. :evil:

I want a ship and a star to steer her by. Not some magical anti-science highway!

It's like a bad first person shooter with corridors. go down this hallway and into this room...ugggh!

Was Xrebirth suppose to be in space?

1 dimension travel systems should be left to Mario and other platform games.

you are free to move from zone to zone without tubes. May take a bit longer, or may be actually faster for short routes, depends on circumstates.
Also Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Oh I know...but the space bases are all on a certain level and no reason to go up/down/left/right.
Just going forward or backward will get you to all the spaceports/cities.

Wouldn't mind if a space 'tube' went in the up or down direction once or twice.

If thats advanded technology! Then I want no part of it!! :D

i see you never played XR at all.. you cannot go backwards in the Tubes :roll: Also afaik only the majority of the HoL DLC is on the Y Plane (didnt check entirely, but for Toride and Home of Light i am sure - and the former one has been praised for its exploration potential and lack of tubes), but for many other Sectors the Y Axis is used. for Ascendancy and Far Out its roughly 50% of the X and Z Axis i guess, for Radiant Haven in OL its actually used more than the X and Z axis i think (but i hate that sector for its weirdly sharp turns in the Tubes... would have been an awesome one if it wernt for that)

Sign me up for X4, I really enjoyed X3. I bought X:R and was immediately disappointed, have not logged in since to it.

Really looking forward to a new game.

Internally yes. (if you mean below/above ecliptic level, if you mean up/down in the Map View, which displays the Map from Above, its the Z axis)

wow, official confirmation of X4 ! There's _nothing_ out there that comes close to X3 Albion, imo. I've been hoping for a long time that a progeny to X3 would appear; Star Citizen, nope, Void Destroyer 2, Gemini 2, Stellaris, nope, nope, nope. None are on the same level.

They are all great games, but they do not do it the "special way" it has been done in X3 - so I know only the original X3 developer has the vision to deliver x4.

X3 was something very unique with a very peculiar vision which no other dev seems to appreciate. Its formulae was perfect and I'm so happy that you've finally decided to refine it further!

I mean no offence, but I just hope X4 will truly extend from X3 and not X:R.

@deadmoomin: Stellaris as X3 replacement? Huuuh?

Void Destroyer 2 - this one is more combat oriented (better than X3) less economy oriented (worse than X3). Not to mention this is one-man development. Don't expect miracle (well even the developer openly say you shouldn't compare it with X3).

Gemini 2 - also more combat oriented and still Early Access with many features for implemented or ballanced. Minght be worth a notice in 2 or 3 years when they finish it.

There is, however, also another project that we are working on and which is equally exciting to us: X4. It is still too early to talk about many details of this, and it doesn't even have a full name yet, but we are making good progress and I wanted to share a few words with you about what we have been doing in the last couple of years.
One thing I hope we'll see back that was implemented in x2 was the ability to have multi-screen support where 1 computer screen could be opened and hold the maps and other windows while leaving the main computer screen for flight/combat

Much better immersion imho. Feels like i'm on the flight deck monitoring systems(and make it touch screen compatible!).

I hate Elite dangerous's galaxy map load-in. what the hell is that? I can't fly or operate my spaceship when I'm looking at this map?! How am I even looking at the map?! is it being fed directly into my visual cortex?! It should be a HUD object! not some lame loading screen.

I really hope X4 can delegate HUD's to multiple monitors.....and I hope all X4 UI is rendered to HUDs.

Absolutely!! Even if the 'monitors' are simply panes within the main game window this would be extremely useful

Could we get an official ETA on XR 4.1? I have been checking the Beta forums and it seems quite stable (many bugs reported and fixed etc) and it is now in RC3 ? version allready. This mainly becouse I'm one of those "I play a game way to loooong"-type and starting to have vast ammounts stations and fleets. AND I noticed in the Beta post about "several small memory leaks" "few crashes with alot of ship and resources". I think am starting to have these issues.

Hello, Egosoft team! First, let me thank you for the excellent series of games, and your work for all these years. Learning about the announcement of x4, makes me very happy, because it means the continuation of the best simulator of life in space, and the continuation of the best plot in a series of games. However, I will return to X4. I would like to share my opinion on some aspects of the game. Maybe someone will agree with me.
Further on the points:
1. Piloting different ships - yes !!!!!, but please return the control of large ships, M1 and M2 and so on. In fact, it would be great to be able to fly ALL ships in the game, mining, combat, transport (you can exclude mining drones). If this does not contradict the plot of course. This was my favorite part of the game. Here I'm flying on a small exporter, here i'm I dock it to the carrier, it was a unique feeling for the games. Let some players say that it's slow and boring - for me they are not right. If they do not like it - let them fly on small ships and control large ships remotely.
2. Many things in x rebirth I really liked. Modular ship systems, battles, large and beautiful stations. It was cool.
3. For me, localization is very important, please make a Russian voice acting, such as it was in the x3 reunion and on. This greatly helped to feel the spirit of the universe.

Yeah, I agree with E: D's galaxy and system maps. I always wondered "If they can feed this into my cortex or visor as a hud, can't the figure out what the alpha channel is for?!"

Separate screens would be great, but I think it would be amazing if they put out a companion app on droid/apple that spoke to you and had the maps on them (think tablet on a sheet music stand beside your chair) like Crew Chief from Project Cars. I would so buy that!

While making X4 please learn from your mistakes with x rebirth. Your consumer demographics arent xbox 13yo peasants that want everything to be dumbed down and that want to be handheld. Your consumer demographics are die hard PC users that enjoy complexity.

Dont water it down, make it big and complex and aim for PC.

Exactly this.

We want to spend hours on choosing what weapon we prefer, what shield we want, what engine... Not just a buy 0/max turrets and upgrade engine from 1 to 5...

Where is the complexity of x3 when I spent sooo many hours on a sheet with all weapons listed + their damages + their power consumption ?
