As I type this very message I'm re-downloading the game on Steam to try to get into this it again, and am trolling the forums to try and get a heads up before I start this time.
I'm wondering about this 2.6 patch I keep reading about. I have just done some light reading on the forums but I have yet to see any patch notes of what it will add to the game. I'm curious, will it even affect me as someone playing the game for essentially the first time? Or is it, as I would assume it to be, a patch for the people who have been playing for some time now?
I just want to know if perhaps I should wait for this patch to come out before jumping into the game, if it's going add some features to help us noobs first starting out. I would assume at this point your focus would be ether on outright making a new game, or making new content to keep the people who already bought it happy.

@crusader8463
There have been no release notes put in the public forum and (usually) Egosoft won't do this until the patch is released. But, historically, patches contain a mix of bug fixes, optimisations and (sometimes a bit, sometimes a lot of) new stuff.
I would suggest you go ahead and start on v2.5 and when v2.6 is released, you'll be able to update and continue with the game you've already started. Especially since there has been absolutely no explicit info given as to when v2.6 is to be released (except the good old "Soon™").
Don't waste today, waiting to see what tomorrow will bring - tomorrow will come just the same, you may as well make the most of today, anyway*

Your loss, Steam is pretty good actually. Plus it's the only place I know where you can get X2 for under 5 bucks.brattbags01 wrote:No thanks, don't trust Steam, don't want steam on my PC and DEFINATLEY do not want steam involved with my game in any way at all

It's been explained a couple of times now that this update does not require you to have Steam on your PC. The achievements are available if you run the game through Steam, otherwise you will get the other features and fixes that the patch has to offer but not the achievements. It's as simple as that and certainly not worth gettingbrattbags01 wrote:No thanks, don't trust Steam, don't want steam on my PC and DEFINATLEY do not want steam involved with my game in any way at all

Sounds good thanks. As I have never really played any of there games, I wasn't sure how they did things around this neck of the woods, so thanks for clarifying it. It's weird to post on a message board that isn't full of people who just insult and belittle you for not knowing things that the people who have been here longer know about.
I wasn't sure if this game was the kind that did the one huge update a year that was almost like an expansion pack level of stuff being added, or if they just did some bug fixes and optimizations from time to time.
Again, thanks for clarifying it for me.

I really don't know why people get into such a tizzy about Steam. I have had it on my computers for years and have never ever once had any of the issues with it that people keep shouting about. That encompasses 4 different machines over about 6 years, varying from Windows XP to Vista 64 bit Ultimate, to Windows 7 now.
The only time I got a little irritated with the Steam method of getting an X (or any other for that matter) game was when the 2.0(? could have been 1.4 but can't remember) patch was delayed a week or so after the regular downloadable version. The next patch came through at the same time as the normal one though, so no worries after that one instance.
I sometimes think that people read horror stories posted on messageboards and on that basis decide that they hate Steam. With all my positive experiences with Steam, I can't help but think that the people who had horror stories somehow had a bad configuration on their machines, whether drivers, hardware, incompatible software installs, or the like.
In any case, I like having Steam, it's really convenient when I decide I want a new game on the spur of the moment and don't want to have to drive to a game store to buy it.
Cheers, y'all.

Yes I agree with you Musicker, there is nothing wrong with steam. All these people shouting "OMG STEAM! I DON'T TRUST IT, IT'S NOT COMING ANYWHERE NEAR MY COMPUTER! STEAM IS STUPID OMG!".... really? Have you guys even tried it? Or is this another generation based hatred spawned by message boards and family members?
I have steam, it does absolutely nothing negative to my computer, it's a great little app store and I've never had a problem with it, and I know people personally who have used it for years, got a ton of great deals.
Truth is, there is no reason to hate it, it's just a fad going around it seems... if you have it, you can choose what to do with it, you can download what you want and such, and it IS convenient in many situations, you guys can't deny that.
I'm not even using it for X3TC, but I don't see anything wrong with it~
/end rant

This isn't a Steam thread

wonder how big the download will be?

Depends on what you mean and what you do.Shaosil wrote:wonder how big the download will be?
If you download the whole of X3TC it's gonna be a fair number of GBs. If you install the DVD version and copy that over to the Steam install folder (instructions earlier in this thread), then get Steam to check the integrity it'll only download the files which differ between the DVD install and the Steam one, in which case it'll probably only be a couple hundred MB (complete guess - might be 10's of MB, but I doubt it).
It'll probably be even smaller if you download the DVD patch of v2.6 when released and install that first

well I for one am thoroughly dissapointed that to get the latest patch I am forced to install thrid party software! Did I buy my game from Steam? No I got it at walmart (like all the other skinny nerds, unafraid of walking) and I should have the option as to whether or not I have to install Steam on my system. This isn't a big deal for Egosoft to incorporate. Why can't I have the 2.6 patch without Steam?
I have some strict policies regarding my privacy and security online, and one thing I never do online is handle money. So a program like Steam that allows for online transactions goes against my ethos. I've seen Steam screw up computers before, Borderlands anyone? I think the mandatory Steam registration is a joke. Perhaps if it were an instance where I just register and thats it then fine, I'll bite the bullet and give Egosoft my regcode, but installing a new program? Reinstalling the game?
No thank you, unless future patches are available to the public on both mediums I will cease to support this game and it's creators.
I'm not asking for an overhaul on 2.6 to meet my wishes... but I do expect that this will be the last patch like this, and I mean that! It's not about Steam, it's about the choice.

From the FAQ
but I use a Linux operating system (Ubuntu) for online and XP for games,
STEAM is not compatible with Ubuntu
(as in STEAM won't run not even with WINE) and I refuse to let XP go online.
So how do I play the achievements ? Or do I resign myself to not playing the achievements ?
I'm not bashing STEAM or moaning about having to pay,
I'm just asking a simple question
(if you look back, I've asked this before, and I'm going to look and see if it was answered, but I don't think it was.)
I have already tried downloading STEAM, that's how I know it's not Linux friendly.

1. If you don't already have Steam:
a. Go to the Steam website, download the Steam Client installer, and run it.
b. Start Steam and follow the onscreen instructions to create a free Steam account.
2. Start Steam and login.
3. Select the "My Games" tab, and click the "Activate a product on Steam" button at the bottom of the window.
4. Follow the onscreen instructions, and enter your X3TC registration code (usually found on the back of the manual) when requested.
5. After Steam has verified the registration code it will download and install a new copy of X3TC.
