Sorry, I didn't understand correctly - it's not definite. However, he's pretty clear that he thinks it will lead to grief ('maybe you're lucky').

From the German forum. Apologies for the poor (Google) translation:
BurnIt! wrote:Just a word to selbstgebastelten patches for the Steam version:
it may seem that it works, but since it effectively so that the version 2.0 with a 1.4 Exe of plays can lead to all sorts of unforeseen problems.
Under certain circumstances can be created Savegames then with the real 2.0 Exe no longer load - maybe you're lucky and it also does everything, but I warn explicitly before mixing with such patches to play.

ok thanks for the clarification.

from my experience:
all the plots are done, game seems to behave ok. there is a few fixes/enhancements that are not in the "hybrid" install,
the towing station seems to be related to old 1.4 version (must be in the EXE). (rotates)

i was able to : access the new ships, access the aldrin missions (and finished) access the new sectors, stations, and also built all the terran stations , so far as content goes everything is perfect.

in a few days i will see if the game is "corrupted" or not (when steam patch the game) that is why i made a backup (twice on my 1.4 save games just in case)

what burnit said is possible to happen , but in my humble opinion not likely to happen. im not the expert.

ROFL!

Looks like Steam is going to miss the original April 10th release date for the patch as well. I highly doubt they'll do jack-all on good friday.

Palm911, BurnIt! is the expert. See that Egosoft badge? In all probability he was involved in making that patch.

Heed his warnings.

dont care if i am right or wrong.

got a 1.4 folder with all my 1.4 saves in it.

second HE DID not said 100% that the game will be corrupted. there is a difference betewn might and will be.

if it happens. i go back to my save games.

AFAIK , egosoft cannot officially endorse any type of comunity fix to the issue. (i might be mistaken) they need to wait for steam to fix and distribuite it. otherwise there could be some legal issues, there has to be a distribution contract betewn the parts (IMHO)

and what i think they are trying to avoid is possible bugs caused by the " hybrid " approach.
i am doing this at my own risk. i appreciate your concern. but as i said, i think there will be no problems.
in a few days i will prove if i am right or wrong. :) and i will let you know :)

So let me get this straight here. You're getting your panties in a twist because you have to wait a few days for a patch.. but you're quite happy to hack together something that may end up corrupting your savegames a couple weeks down the line.. because in the eventuality that it does then you'll just rollback to a point before the patch gets released thereby losing that time..

And your point about Steam being a few days behind with the patch was what again exactly?

It happened on 1.2 and now again on 2.0. I am tired of waiting for the patches and I was just looking for an excuse to send Egosoft more money and I wanted the physical medium in the first place. So I just picked up my copy at Walmart.

Also, the X3 copies were stacked behind other games on the bottom shelf. I put them all front and center. =) Other people picked up copies behind me after I did that.

Guess with 2 copies on my laptop I can mod one version and leave the other vanilla, or something.

Oh man, must be a misunderstanding here. NS, when palm911 wrote DID he meant it as the english word not the acronym for Dead is Dead :) No need to get upset at him :) I apologize on palm911's behalf for any misconception this may have caused.

Uhm, Slug's post doesn't mention Dead-is-dead at all.

He's saying he doesn't understand why someone would complain about having to wait for the patch, but at the same time throw together a hack job that might kill their saves when even backed up the loss of the saves will cost time as well. Or something like that, its 2am and I can't think straight.

It isn't Steams fault that Egosoft made a mistake with the patch. Now they've had to start the pocess of integrating the patch all over again (as I understand it, things would have been fine were it not for glowbug) .

Its a pain, but now we've got to wait until Steam are ready to release again.

Will two installs (Steam and DVD) interfere with each other? Any issues with say, the registry?

Nothing major, I think.

If both installs aren't the same version (or don't have the same scripts and/or mods) then you may have issues if you share saved games.

Some external programs use the registry values to get the X3TC install folder, but you can usually just point them at the right place manually.

I have both versions installed with no issues. I keep automatic Steam updates off so I can manage the patch process between both. Once you update and run, your saves get updated. The other version won't run them until it is also updated.

If you have a legit copy of windows there is no reason at all you cannot activate it. They usualy come with 3 activations. When used it provides a number to call, you give the guy your # and he gives you an activation code.

So what is the problem?

EDIT:
Oh I think your talking about Steam activations....
Aren't they linked to a username account?

I assume he's referring to Tages activations - which I believe can be increased on request by either Tages or Egosoft.

If you bought the game through steam and run out of activations as long as it is still attached to YOUR steam account you can get more activations no problem.
