No, I think 8 is enough.

I've got a new PC coming, too. Just one 480 in it - I are a cheapskate, I are. I'll save the money for some 3D glasses and a new monitor.

I would definitely like to see a multi-core + CUDA version of this game. Just a dream, I know... but what a dream!

Actually, 965 does not have 8 cores it has 4 cores that can try to do two independent tasks at once (that is what Hyperthreading is about) and in fact Hyperthreading makes load balancing a bit of a problem and can result in the whole thing becoming counter productive because the 4 cores have to try and do twice the work. Turning Hyperthreading off is probably the better option when you want to ensure maximum performance and performance reliability with any given task.

on windows 7, which knows how many threads each core has and schedules 1 process per core before "doubling up" and using the extra threads, there's no disadvantage to having hyperthreading turned on mostly-single-threaded apps like x3tc.

so you might as well leave it on, to help you in situations where you have many threads wanting compute access at once :)

It's about one hour ago I have seen the "what means 'nearly' exactly?" discussion on the german forum.

Xenon_Slayer wrote:To clarify how DVD owners can have a STEAM install with minimal downloading:
1. First, install the DVD version onto your computer
2. Register your game with STEAM (not currently possible)
3. Copy your DVD version into the folder STEAM will use for X3TC
--C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\x3 terran conflict in my case

4. Use STEAM to verify the integrity of X3TC
5. Allow STEAM to download what is missing, a few MB if anything

I did this myself the other day. I own X3TC on disk and on STEAM so it was an obvious solution to the large download.
What about us DVD owners who don't want the steam package but want the fixes in the next patch? What do we do? I don't want to register to steam. I want game fixes and any improvement that enhance the main story line from ego... Achievements don't interest me.

Will there be a steamless patch?

Thanks

Read the thread? It's mentioned every 3 pages or so...

e.g.

DO I will have to download (whole) XTC from steam to patch 2.6?
DO I will have to run Steam to run XTC 2.6?
The answer is "NO" to all of those questions.

Even Mr Spock is known to have given a value by mere 8 decimals of precision, and add a non-characteristic clarifying qualifier: "approximately".

The problem with expression "nearly there" is that the driver might have a slightly differing view on what "there" means. That naturally voids the value of getting the "nearly" exact.

Another coincidence is that on another forum an another product is closing release. Its previous releases have happened about the same time as previous patches for X3TC. Pure coincidence. So I've had a pleasure to watch two entirely different crowds eagerly waiting for their goodies. This time on that other forum the devs announce daily that the state of project is "nothing to report"/"minor problem"/"steady progress". Surprisingly that has kept the discussion down so far. But that product release is of different nature.

IIRC, it did use to be a standard procedure by the Devs to postpone the release by one day every time someone asked: "When?"

No, because every day someone will say 'Isn't it meant to be out today!?'

Therefore, it'll never be released... for all eternity.
