He's right though, a responsible computer user is mostly safe from virii without a anti-virus. I've been running with an antivirus for 2 years (haven't formatted once in this period) and I have had no infections, aside from tracking spy-ware that is separate and can better be avoided with something like adblock extension. A good firewall (And router working in the background) with active user intervention on outgoing and incoming connections is a must though, I like to know when anything wants to send data to anyone.

Similarly on my laptop I opted not to install the AV because of this, its at 6 months and still just as good the day I installed the OS, with no abnormal process's running.

For more advanced users, AV's are not needed, simple knowledge of virus avoidance is better then any AV software. I don't consider them a necessity unless your in a business environment.

A better solution to turning off your AV is to get a AV that isn't spyware/malware itself, like the big named ones are. They usually use 20-30% of system resources at all times, which is just ridiculous.

On a more on topic related note, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, go to processes tab, scroll down and find System Idle Process and check its cpu #. This number should be at 98-99% when your in windows on the web and not running any intensive apps. If its not showing this number, anything below 96% while idle is just unacceptable and that's the cause of your slowdown, not X3

Unless you do know what you are doing, do not mess with AV software. You get the significant change in the performance only on low-end computers. If you really do want to stop the antivirus, unplug the computer from the network (before you stop the AV). The detached cable is better protection than a firewall. And start the antivirus before you attach the computer again. The easiest way is to restart the computer.

The biggest thing here is getting the latest service packs for Windows. Assuming that, Getting a virus is a user induced event. If you don't cause it, it wont happen. Simply being connected to the net presents no danger to a user.

I agree that your best protection is abstinence, unplugging from the net entirely, and if your afraid of a virus then yeah thats the best solution. I'm just saying that the internet can be a good friend if you just have some basic knowledge of avoidance.

Of course if some hacker is specifically targeting you thats a different story ;)

Well back on topic slightly... My steam is updating and because I've renamed the 00002.mov file (for performance increase) it's also downloading that file... I have a pretty slow internet connection and now I'm at 49% updated after 90 minutes... no chance of it being ready before my wife comes back in...

If I'd remembered not to switch off my PC last night, I'd be sat here playing!!!

Yup, the news can be found from here. My X3:TC is now up-to-dated, v1.2.1. So it is time to start again X3:TC! Thx, Steam stuff.

unfortunately, this is not necessarily true

if other computers on your local network (sharing same router, or even same isp) get a virus, it CAN infect you. AV companies classify viruses that spread over network connections as worms.

They DO exist.

Is it just me that thinks that a thread about a hotfix is getting off topic when there are several posts arguing about how to contract a virus???

While that's true, being an informed user can keep that to a minimum. In my nearly 10 years of not using AV, the only worm I've gotten was that stupid Blaster worm that hit everybody a few years ago. And I probably only got that by browsing questionable websites that I visited knowing the probable consequences.

While an AV program is a good idea for most computer uses, being "street smart" about the internet is far more helpful in preventing infections. The number one rule is: don't download browser toolbars! Dang if those things aren't the bane of my existence as an IT support professional.

Anyway, to be more on topic, the hotfix seems to be pretty effective. Before the patch hit, I was in the middle of a Xenon patrol mission with over a full page's (on the sector map) worth of P's, and the game seems much smoother after updating. I'm looking forward to 1.3 (or whatever the next major patch is) and whatever goodies it will bring.

Well I started Steam yesterday evening. I had previously applied the hotfix manually and also changed the billboard video file.

Steam didn't update automaticly, so I had to verify all cache files. After that Steam downloaded approximatly 300 MB... :) Too bad you don't know what exactly steam downloaded. Anyway...hotfix applied.

That was probably Steam downloading the .mov file you changed since it more than likely thought it was now missing. Mine did the same after I forgot to change the name back before verifying.

Update seems to cause new crash

Post by pauld@isomicro.com »

Hi, thanks for the update it started off really well with much better performance. However it has now crashed four times with the fault being with the main exe file, but it's reported as 1.20.0 should this not be 1.20.1? Has the patched been applied properly? Should the version number change? I had no crashes of this type before this update.

If it is saying it is 1."20".0 or even 1."20".1 I would say your patch got fairly screwed up somehow. Was this a manual patch or auto-Steam patch? I believe manual patching only patched the GAME itself, not the launcher and thus, the launcher would still say "1.2.0" while the game would say "1.2.1".

As soon as possible.

They have to rewrite freaking Mission Director thing cause all missions currently are broken somehow. So it may take some time.

Difference

Post by JohanTheCoder »

The big difference between Reunion and TC is performance. I played reunion and the performance was much better there for me.. I even played the Xtended MOD a lot without any great annoying performanceproblems. Just a lot of bonuses for free.. (including a ultragigantic ship that made my computer lag however when it fired but I could live with that ehhe) :)

But TC is on the other hand a great improvement relating to missions and the stories are better and longer. I like the new concepts a lot.

I recently purchased X3:TC via Steam and got great performance from the game. However, after playing for 4 days total play time, the game has ground to almost a halt. If I start a new game all is well, but all the saved games from where I've been playing long term are slow slow slow.

Is this going to be re-addressed in patch 1.3?
