I agree; it's more annoying than effective. The main issue is that most weapons and turrets are extremely inaccurate against targets of that size.
Xenon capital ships, in particular, struggle to land even a single shot on laser towers.
I used to sport a singular beam emitter (with the reload mod) on my Nemesis just for that purpose (mainly when doing missions) - well, both for mines and the laser towers.

Same here, all of my personal ships either have a beam emitter or carry a docked ship with one installed (unless playing under self-imposed rules which prohibit them e.g. current game is Boron only). Exceptionally useful weapon in such circumstances. Also use it for opening lockboxes, for which the rest of my usual loadout (tend to favour shard guns & torpedo launchers) would be wildly inappropriate.

The moment AI starts spamming laser towers next to players' assets they will instantly become overpowered and we shall see the topics popping out with requests to nerf them.

The least intrusive option to weaken them a bit would be to give them little deployable greebles, maybe solar panels or something, to make them less survivable in sector.

Generally speaking, I think they're OP but their in sector strength against fighters is particularly egregious.

The problem is if you nerf their individual performance based on spam, spam becomes the only scenario in which they work. Changing the economic ease of spamming them leaves their regular function intact.
