I found it really hard to be only unfriendly to one faction. Once your Reputation is low enough there will be skirmishes with them in the territory of other faction, quickly leading to a snowball-effect until everyone dislikes me. Especially the Teladi like to trade with everyone, so they always get pulled into conflicts
. So every time Even just being unfriendly to VIG does not work all that great. Sure, nobody really likes them, but for some reason, MIN likes to disguise Ravens as Vig, so they get blown up when they pass my ships. Then MIN hates me, TEL follow and then the galaxy is doomed once more.

I have not voted for a faction specifically, because for me it depends on what I start as and play.
If I play as a trader or a specific company (for example I had gate network wide medical empire once) I tried to not be unfriendly with anyone to Maximize profits. So in this case I only fight the usual Xenon and Pirates (or try to avoid them)
If I want to play the game for war, then I decide for a side and stick with it. So if I am an Argon I fight the Enemies of the Argons that the game has set up. If I play as Paranide faction I fight the other Paranide faction or the Argons and so on. If I play as a Split I fight other Split or Boron because that's just what a good Split would do.
So I don't consider any faction my natural adversary.

Cannot choose anyone as I try be good friends with everyone but at the same time I steal their ships when that's possible. For example multiple times TRI have started attack against TEL or MIN or ALI (yes they almost destroyed ALI's wharf in Trinity Sanctuum IV) I will arrive on site and take their "toys" away as they cannot play nicely with others.
Sometimes this will cooldown attacking faction like TRI and they leave others alone for awhile.
CUB and RHA have handed over me plenty of Dragons and Dragon Raiders. They also have fights against each others in sectors where I have wharfs and with ARG in Argon Prime.
TEL have offered me Cranes to expand my mining operations in the galaxy (nice faction and I appriciate doing "business" with them as they buy replacement ships from my shipyards).
TER have given me Tokyos and some Asgards.
I think HAT, PIO and FRF are the factions I cause the least pain.

I try to gain good rep from all in order to maximise my own empire from trade and then stick it to the Xenon threat

Another hippy non-vote. You can't make money off of factions when they're shooting at you! So, I make friends with everybody.
Even the SCA isn't all that bad. Sure, they make a bother of themselves, but I can destroy and even capture their ships without a reputation hit. I've gotten a dozen or two capital ships that way, not to mention the anti-advertisement achievement.

I don't consider any faction an adversary until they become an adversary.
1. Please do more on NPC civilian/uniform variety, and bio customisations, Devs.
2. Stations need sirens/warnings when enemy is close in numbers or Station in danger of destruction (in Sandbox).
Yes, for immersion. Thankyou ahead of time. (Edit: This is actually happening!!!)

So, oddly enough, I've chosen none of those. I have found that, because I CAN be on friendly terms with them, I can't resist being on friendly terms with them.
The most common example is Vigor. Often I think, I'm going to be at odds with them this time! I'm going to oppose their evil ways! And it never happens. Totally a "me" thing, but it's just always the way it goes. Even the Yaki, I can't help but become friendly towards them at some point, once it's possible. I'm ethically opposed to these sorts of pirates, but again, because I CAN be, I feel compelled to be friendly with them. Don't misunderstand me, I don't think this is a bad thing. But it IS an interesting thing, when it comes to player behavior I think.
I've posted in the past that, because of that strong urge (and because I can't be the only player who feels that way, as indicated by this thread's comments), we need some more uncompromising bad guys. Like the Xenon and the Khaak. I'd prefer the hypothetical faction to be completely fleshed out, like any major ally-able faction is (minus things like licenses and rank rewards of course, for obvious reasons). And I'd like to be able to acquire said uncompromising bad guy's ships, via small and medium ship bailing, and boarding for larger ships.
Regardless though, no one is ever a bad guy for me, except when there's no choice for them to be the bad guy for me. Ultimately, in a perhaps strange way, this makes having a few uncompromising bad guys a good thing.
I understand that this presents certain issues from a development stand point, related to dev time, effort, return on that effort, etc. But there it is. That's how it is for me!
