Re: Joystick
Huh. I can't remember the last time I had a joystick. 2004, maybe? Too many games make it too convenient to use your mouse even for flight sims...
I must defend my honor!

Obviously. It would hurt the sales pretty bad if they made games specific to controllers.CorruptUser wrote: ↑Fri, 5. Oct 18, 03:25 Huh. I can't remember the last time I had a joystick. 2004, maybe? Too many games make it too convenient to use your mouse even for flight sims...
Not that its unheard of, I vividly remember not being able to play Star Wars X Wing Alliance, because I had no joystick.
But if you look at it from another angle, it really boosts the atmosphere of the game if you are using a controller.

Actually, with my T-16000m and TWCS throttle, I can play Elite comfortably without ever touching the mouse. In fact, in many ways it is easier than using a mouse when you get used to it.Kane Hart wrote: ↑Thu, 4. Oct 18, 23:42 I never seen anyone use 100% joystick when playing games like Elite. They tend to use mouse / keyboard for another interactions. Heck most games Cockpits even show a keyboard built in. If you want to play the game like the future get use to using a keyboard / mouse on top of a joystick or you are not legit play![]()

I got a Saitek X52 and tried it on XR... Wasn't very easy because of a lack of personnalisation's settings…
I hope, especially because we'll be flying ALL ships, that it will be manageable and effective!!!

I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 since many years, and i played all the X games with it. Can configure 8 buttons, flip, throttle, POV, can feel the force... and i don't know of any other really.
But since its too old (yet still function perfectly), there must be new versions out.

Re: Joystick
I am seriously thinking of going out to buy a joystick for this game. I want to turn off the flight assist and see what that is actually like.
I have not had a stick since X2 and X3 reunion due to the fact that the mouse was fine with the later iterations.
Anybody got any suggestions for a really useful stick.

This is a great deal for a HOTAS setup. It is a good quality stick and throttle that is priced considerably less than other alternatives.

Re: Joystick
That's a decent hotas setup good choice.
I've just upgraded my stick with a swan neck extension and stronger spring to make it more like the real thing. Regardless of the stick itself I'm a big fan of it being positioned between your legs or close to your lap. Happy to share the details if anyone is interested.

I had a hell of a time getting my Attack 3 configured for X:R correctly. The default ingame controls for it were....Lol wtf.
Hopefully it'll be much improved for X4.

Has anyone had any experience of the new Logitech x56 Black/Grey ,, it is supposed to be an upgraded version of the blue/black original and looks to be about 40£ cheaper... ?

Personally I will wait until we have some feedback on the different Joysticks.

Re: Joystick
I just got an X56 and was trying it in X:R. Felt pretty good until I got to the point where I couldn't figure out how to dock with the first station in the tutorial using the stick. I thought I had remapped all the menu control so I could use them, but nothing I did activated the on-screen dock prompt.Varek Raith wrote: ↑Sat, 27. Re: Joystick
I just bought one, so my experiences is limited, but my thoughts:
- Looks great
- Feels pretty good (nice soft-touch plastics on the touch surfaces)
- Maybe slightly too big, there's a few buttons that are annoying to reach or just stick out a little too much
- Lots of stuff to map
- Throttle way too stiff. This is apparently a common problem with the X55/X56. Even at the lowest resistance, moving it takes a decent amount of force (sometimes enough to lift up the throttle from the desk), and is a bit slow. Fine if you are flying a jetliner in a flight sim, but not good for flying a fighter. It does loosen up a bit with use, but will retighten if left alone (apparently it's some sort of thick grease that causes the stiffness).
- Buttons generally feel sturdy and durable
- Can switch spring in stick for different stiffness (feels best with the heaviest spring to me).
- LEDs look good on the throttle but bad on the stick, I turned them off.
As for black/grey vs. black/blue, everything I've read said that the Logitech-built black/gray is at least as good as the Saitek black/blue, and possibly better. If the grey one (which is what I have) is cheaper, I'd definitely go with that (it certainly looks better).

Re: Joystick
@fcth .... Thanks for the review of the new X56 .. was interested in what changes had been made.
As a return favour I had problems sometimes docking (x 52 pro) if I remember correctly (I have not played Rebirth for a while, did not want to retain muscle memory of controls in preparation for X4) in key map controls there is a key press for want of a better description that clears previous target icons .. I would use that quickly before docking, then the icon would appear..... Hopefully my maybe confusing/unclear use of correct terminology will help you,, it can be done .....Thanks

Well that won't help someone who already has a Thrustmaster HOTAS and VKB pedals. Guess I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed that they will work with X4.

And my TrackIR Pro...
