Since you confirm that there is no possibility of latent mod files interfering from within your saves, you could back up your saves (just for safety as they should not be affected), delete the Steam local content for X Rebirth (only!) and manually delete the Steam X Rebirth game folder for added confidence that all corrupt files are removed. Then download the game again afresh.

That will give you 100% confidence in your installation at least (since nobody else is reporting this issue it should not be prevalent in the download).

Steam gamefile cache verify is not 100% effective at detecting corrupt files, although it is a very good tool to use as a first step on encountering Steam game issues.

EDIT: Ooops! I meant X3TC of course and not X Rebirth. (Goes off muttering to self.)

Have you checked hard drive integrity? If not, try running chkdsk on the system drive, and on the game drive if it's different. There's a lot of disk access as you're flying around. Also, it doesn't have to be a game file that crashes. Any number of Windows system files, including drivers, may cause such a crash if they're required by the game. Or it may be that you simply have some bad blocks on the hard drive itself that the Windows pagefile is using to cache memory.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

X4 is a journey, not a destination. Have fun on your travels.

@Alan: Gonna start new DiD -> new clean save
Completely deleted and redownloaded X3TC and archived the clean download so I can restore it after every Sesseion.

@Nanook: all drives successfully checked: everything clean

Now removed 2 of my 4 RAM sticks parallel to trying out Process Monitor. If error persists, I will try out the other 2 sticks and see what the Process Monitor has to say.
