I use a mod that adds buyable Repair Lasers to the game, along with two factories that produce them (and alters a couple of Trade Stations to buy them). I can mount one on the back of any TS that will also accept a Mobile Drilling System or Tractor Beam (or mount four on certain TMs) and order it to repair my damaged ship while I do something else. At over 500K apiece, they're not something that's trivially cheap to pick up at the start of the game, but by the time you need them to fix bigger ships, you can afford to do so. In Sector, it may still take hours to fix a large capital ship, although the OOS combat system speeds that up to a matter of minutes.

It also means that you don't have the only Repair Laser in the universe. Even though you don't see other ships using them, at least they're built and actively traded by the NPCs.

Granted, it's more than a 1K file, and it requires a mod manager (the light version will do) to install, but it's an elegant and not totally unbalanced solution to the problem (and more "immersive" than 2 in-game hours of SETA or sticking the firing key down and going for a cup of coffee).

Somehow, I think this whole topic belongs in the Scripts and Mods forum.

I use the Marine Repair script to send my marines on a repair spacewalk to fix any hull damage I run into and even gives them some training in engineering and mechanical while they work. Really, really really useful mod.

Before I found that mod, I used a rubber band, wrapped around the right mouse button.

It was patching up my newly-acquired M7 (from a fetch mission I decided I had no interest in competing) while I went grocery shopping (a process that living in a rural area as I do usually takes three quarters of an hour), and coming home to find the repairs unfinished, that decided me to go looking for a mod. It's absurd that of all the people in the universe, only you, personally, can fix ships with spacewalks. The mod makes more sense than vanilla does and TBPH it makes more sense than this workaround does (although to be fair, this seems like very good work).
