Thanks Shootist. So it sounds like the short answer is to fix that RAM/socket fault to get the missing 0.5 Gb back and maybe invest in a bit more RAM too. In the meantime keep your pagefile harddrive defragged.

There are some tips on the nets where you can reduce your Win7 footprint to about 800K but that is the limit. Generally various services that can be safely disabled.
there is this friend of mine that got a PC with a mobo from 2006, with an athlon X2(barely 2.5 Ghz) 2 Gigs of ram and a 9800GT. TC runs silky smooth on his rig with all GFX settings on full. is there an explanation for this?

I would guess he has a well-optimised, updated and balanced system, regularly cleared of junk, and probably with a fast and smooth harddrive. Perhaps he is still running XP which X3 was designed for and so minimising OS, driver and DirectX interfacing.

It will also depend on what mods he uses (or not) as well.

actually its the other way around. i try to keep my pc clean while my friend got his little bro who installs anything. i know its a paradox. in other news we can now divide by zero!

i will try experimenting with my ram.

Well, most of the stress on the game only starts when you run into large battles or start building giant complexes. Running X3 smoothly before any of that happens is fairly easy.

32bit O/Ses will run 32bit games more efficiently than a 64bit O/S because of WoW (running windows on windows). You can google WoW, but it is a virtual machine issue. And has been around since 16bit Windows running 8bit DOS games, and 32 bit Windows running 16bit Windows applications. Often the addition RAM of the 64bit O/S, and the additional power of the newer machines, will help make up the difference but not always.

Does your friends PC run your saves "silky smooth"?

didnt try my saves on his PC, only a 3.0 version of TC. also i started TC from scratch in mine too, and the performnce was the same modded or unmodded, and its like that ever since i got superbox. only X-btf and X-tension run fine

PLZ NOTE: X2 the threat shows the very same symptoms, unmodded, stuttering and and loss of framerate.

PS: stress on the game starts as soon as i start the game stuttering and all, it all gets worse in battles. i will have to look into a single and simple structure facing empty space to get smooth(gate etc).

PS2: testing the ram did not show any faults. removing either one showed that both were ok and working with all of their 2 GBs(tested on their respective slots and not on the same one)

OK, in addition to any other advice:

I notice in an earlier post, you're postulating that the issue definitely isn't your Anti-Virus software. I'm unsure how you arrived that this conclusion, unless you've completely uninstalled it previously and re-tested the issues within X3 and your other games. Most AV suites generate a performance hit on the target endpoint (workstation) by design, especially when incorrectly configured, corrupt or suffering from a bug. Part of the suite will have modules that actively scan memory and I/O (which includes your HDD and any other removable media) when it's accessed. This behaviour is usually configurable however.

1. Remove your AV suite completely and ensure there's no remnants of previous AV suites you may have had installed. Ensure Windows Defender is turned off. If you're worried about MalWare, physically disconnect your PC from outside world temporarily, whilst the AV software is removed and don't access in any removable media (including disks) that you're not sure are safe. Reboot following the uninstalls and re-test the X3 issue.

You mentioned about the Windows Performance Index tests not working. This can be either an OS corruption issue, driver issue, hardware issue or Group Policy issue (not conclusive I know). Which may also highlight the issues you're experiencing in games.

2. **Please don't answer this on the forum** Ensure your Windows 7 installation is activated by right-clicking MY COMPUTER and selecting PROPERTIES. If Windows 7 isn't activated and you're using a genuine version, you can re-activate automatically. If you're not using a genuine version, I/we can't help you.

3. Clear out C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore\. Check C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\winsat.log for errors.

4. Open the Group Policy Editor, click START > RUN, type GPEDIT.MSC and press ENTER.
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Performance Control Panel.
Double-click "Turn off access to the performance center core section"
    Set it to "Not configured"
If it's already set to "Not Configured", set it to "Enabled" and click APPLY. Then revert back the setting to "Not Configured". This resets the registry based policy if set already.
Repeat the steps in this branch as well:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Performance Control Panel
Are you using SLI? Or are you using a single GFX card? If you're using SLI or even Hybrid SLI, test the games without it.

And the usual stuff, if applicable - remove any overclocks to your CPU, GPU, Memory or other buses and re-test X3. Does your i5 utilise the Turbo Mode feature? If so, turn off Turbo Mode in the BIOS and re-test X3. This is effectively an automatic overclock.

Finally, have you tried resetting your BIOS to it's default values? If not, certainly consider it.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi guys im back after a fairly long period. i might have find out what causing the erratic framerate behaviour

i have only one dimm installed right now and it seems that framerate problems are ironed out. problem is my RAM is still stuck at 3,5 Gb and the stutters are still present. i will remain with just one dimm until i find whether the culprit is dual channel or not.

PS: same results are coming from both slots of the dual channel pair while the ones(the other 2 blue ones) that i have never used since i bought the computer do not appear to be working.

PS2: is it possible that the stutters are caused by the HDD (WDC WD10EAVS-00D7B1).

The stutters are probably caused by slow HDD access for pagefile because your games are not seeing enough RAM available to run without pagefile access. That is not a problem with the HDD, it is more a problem of not having enough accessible RAM for the games.

If your other pair of RAM slots are not working and a confirmed good 4GB RAM only shows as 3.5GB on Win7 x64 despite changing slots then you probably have a RAM socket problem on your motherboard as well. (Or one or more of your DIMMs are not the correct type for the mobo.)

could it be? i mean since i bought the pc i had no problems whatsoever and i never removed the ram up until recently. the ram problem was noticed just relatively recently when i encountered these problems with X3 and upgraded my ram. also im seeing that the mobo recognizes all 8 gigs of memory when both sticks are on."sigh" anyway is there a way to diagnose any problems with my ram slots?

this kinda gets of topic since it seems that the problem is with my computer rather X3TC

Sorry that seems to contradict what you said before ".. my RAM is still stuck at 3,5 Gb " and "while the ones ... do not appear to be working"

If you have 8GB RAM fitted and showing as available in the DxDiag while still having stutters in several games then I don't know what the issue is apart from it being system-based rather than the games.

I think you need to slot in the 8GB of new RAM and then run and post a new DxDiag here.

the thing is that what im registering is 8 gigs of ram, but total physical is 3,5 Gbs. so my PC knows that i got 8 Gbs, but the usable ones are 3,5 for some reason regardless of how many modules i got on it.

one other thing, i have installed my old modules along with the new ones, and it seems they are registering. so those supposedly non working slots, actually do work. im currently seeing 12288 Mbs from which only 3,5 are physical(as expected).

will post the DxDiag tomorrow with the 8 gigs.

Ok...sounds like you have memory remap disabled in your BIOS.

Have a search for it and enable it. Failing that consider reseting your BIOS to defaults.

well i turned my bios upside down and could not find the memory remap function, actually there is non. i also tried to load optimised defaults, but it didn't do anything.

What's your motherboard manufacturer and model?

I'll try and find the manual online (or you can post a link to it) and have a look through the BIOS options. Sometimes manufacturers have different names for the same features.

Just to rewind a bit:

Goto MSCONFIG - START > RUN > MSCONFIG.MSC

In the BOOT tab, select advanced options.

Is there a tick in MAX MEMORY with a value underneath? Ensure this is not ticked.

Let us know this before I start on the more exotic CPU / RAM insertion issues with some P55 boards.
