Yes. Various people have used various tools and have identified that the game will use up to about 2.25GB if the method described is used.

Again, various people have tried it and it seems to work. I don't see a major problem with people doing it if they are comfortable with it. Obviously it's not supported, but if people keep the original EXE and revert to it if they have problems then everything should be fine.
Once again, a number of people who have tried it say it has helped them. In particular it should give the game enough memory to load everything it wants to load during a long game session without ever needing to flush it out to make room for something else. This shouldn't affect general performance but may reduce or eliminate the occasional pauses while the flushing process takes place.
Has anyone here tried a new i7 system - I'm looking to change PC's and they aren't silly money at the moment. Wondered if it ran X3 better thean other bleeding edge things ?
Here is the proof the game uses more then 2 gigs of memory if the >2gig switch is activated for the exe of the game. [ external image ]

I have seen this go higher as well but that takes a longer gaming session then i have time for tonnight.
exceeding the minimum specs is no guarantee that this game will run smoothly on your new rig, ESPECIALLY of you choose to run the highest quality settings which I assume you would want to on a decent gaming rig.
I tried to run this game with my intel q9650 (12mb cache), vista 32, 4 gig ram and ati HD4870 and experienced horrific lag/stuttering/freezing very early on in the game.
X3R flys on this system. X3TC, using the same engine, runs terribly and I am not exagerating. I should point out that this system handles games such as Farcry2, Fallout 3 etc, no problem on high settings.
You pays your money and you takes your chance, but I feel I must point out that there is fairly strong evidence even amongst these forums, that X3TC is poorly coded.
I am well aware that vista 32 will not use all 4 gig and I specifically chose not to use vista 64 due to crap driver support. I should point out that egosoft have even pointed out several times in these forums that using vista 64 may well be the cause of the lag/freezing/stuttering due to poor drivers.
Good for you. Personally, upgrading my entire operating system is not a viable fix. Whilst I appreciate the OP will be running vista 64, there are many people running vista 64 who have reported similar lag problems in these forums.
I think i'll wait for more info on windows 7 before I upgrade. My old beater should last me another year.
The i7 sounds pretty impressive, so I'll probably go the i7 route when the time comes. My budget will be in the $2,500 to $3,000 CAD range, so I'll have to keep tabs on what's coming out and whento catch the deals.
Some really large battles have caused some minor lag but not too much.
Did get some really bad lag last night when I went through a gate to come face to face with 2 Xenon Q's and a PX. Framerate dropped to under 1fps and couldn't work out way. Checked my system resources and CPU was running at 20% and I was only using 2GB of RAM. Then noticed my HDD was running at 100% and a lot of files were writing to the HDD which I was not currently using. Soon after this I realized what had happened, Vista runs a scheduled hdd defrag every Wednesday and it looks like this had kicked in whilst I was playing.
Tried the same sector with the 2 Q's and PX again today and ran as smooth as anything so suggest turning off the scheduled defrag in Vista!
