Memtest is carp for testing for memory errors unless the error is absolutely bleeding obvious. Try Prime95 (the 64bit version - http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=205) in stress testing mode. Usually picks up problems with RAM in a couple of minutes (If you have any problems that is) - you might want to run it for a few hours.
Random crashes do sound like driver conflicts or a dodgy piece of RAM.
The reason you may not have had a problem in other games is that X3 uses a LOT of RAM and most games don't use as much as it does, so it may be reaching and using a part of the RAM that rarely gets touched by anything else.
