Which forum have you been on for the last three years? I assure you there have been plenty of complaints about the flight control of X3...

well , I think you maybe a little angry about what i said about the game. I stand by it. If their were problems with targeting on X3 i didn't notice one and i have a cheap pc, no joy stick one click and you were targetting and flying and manevering all in one motion on manual! If other people had problems there was at least something they could do to fix it ingame.
My point is, WHY FIX SOMETHING THATS NOT BROKEN! their's only so many corrections one can make before something gets left-out or removed. Believe me when i say i played X3 for 3 years not without problems of chorse, but they were problems that got fixed. This one can't be fixed. I dare you to fix it, i double dog dare you to fix it. You will have another happy person if you can. :o  :? michael

Hi guys, I'm new to this discussion but I thought I should weigh in because I'm now slightly confused.

Admittedly, I love the idea of using a Joystick; but if I'm honest I find it's VERY hard to aim accurately with a joystick (perhaps it would be better if I had a really good one, but my Logitech Wingman Force 3D was pretty much the best one I could find at the time) largely because you need to balance accuracy (small movements) with speed (to take full advantage of the potentially optimised rudder). Ultimately, speaking from my ancient Tie Fighter and X-Wing experience, I decided that the mouse was necessary to ensure accuracy for tiny adustments when targets are at long range - I ended up using both mouse and joystick.

Then along came Freelancer with its wonderful mouse control, and I applaud Egosoft for learning from this and, more importantly, crediting the idea to others (MS?). I played Freelancer for ages, great fun, fantastic controls. The only down side was that my joystick became obselete which is rather a shame really...

Then along came X2 (my first X game) which I loved due only to its complexity - oversimplicity was the main fault of Freelancer in my opinion. It was great fun to play, but the first problem I encountered, aside from performance, was that playing the game with the mouse was simply impossible! X2/X3-RU mouse control just doesn't move the way it should. Either that or I wasn't using it properly. I moved the mouse and it would either go nowhere at all or spin wildly out of control. It was fine for small adjustments though so I continue to play it as I did Tie Fighter with both joystick and mouse.

Now Terran Conflict appears and it's fantastic! I can play with the mouse just fine. It's easier and more conveniant than the joystick for aiming - it's only the throttle that suffers for lack of an analogue device other than the mouse wheel. Perhaps if the mouse wheel throttle sensitivity could be increase a little it would be possible to use it during combat to pull off 'handbrake' turns...

Now, I accept the very valid point of the author of this topic - selecting stations is quite awkward now because the bounding selection boxes for objects are a little odd this time round, so it doesn't help that clicking the mouse on the incorrect spot causes your ship to turn, sometimes violently. I also understand why people played X2/X3-Ru with the joystick, but why people would want to control the ship at all with the mouse in classic mode is quite simply beyond me. Unless I have misunderstood a subtle dynamic, the previous incarnations of this game were impossible to control using the mouse alone - at least for fast turning and therefore any meaningful combat.

If someone can explain my misunderstandings I would be very greatful. But for now I remain thoroughly thankful that the developers were gracious enough to learn from other games and provide a vastly improved method of flight control.

Apologies for the length, I have 'Verbose Dave' enabled by default, it would seem
