Interesting, any ideas what it was?:)

If it's in PCI slot - then where does it record?
Besides shouldnt the motherboard support that then? Kinda like a second video card?

Without a DVD Recorder, it's going to be difficult to get the video back into the computer. You can record to VHS but then, how to transfer the video back to the PC. I've got an RCA Lyra 20 GB MP3 player/recorder that has the ability to record from any audio/video source. I've also got a DVD recorder, but I'm not inclined to disconnect it from my home theater system and take it into my office to record from the PC.

I'm going to try recording with my Lyra and see how it does. I'll let you know. It records to an .asf file which is easily converted to just about any format. I tend to use Windows Movie Maker because it's so darned easy to do just about anything you want with a video file.
The new PC I just built for myself:
i5-13600k, 32GB DDR5 RAM, RTX 3060 12GB
It'll do until I can upgrade the graphics card.

I guess I just set everything to minimum and see if my computer can handle recording video from X3

The trial version of Fraps only allows you to capture a max of 30 seconds of video at a time. The registered (purchased) version allows much more and I believe it adds more features. It costs $37 (U.S.) to register. Now, Fraps is limited to a resolution of 1152 X 864. I play the game at 1280 x 1024 so I'd have to lower the resolution, too.

You wouldn't happen to have a Windows Media Center Edition PC, would you? Those systems DO have A/V inputs and it would be easy to record from an outside source (VCR, DVD, TV, etc.). There are Video Capture cards out there that allow you to record from an A/V source, but the ability isn't built into motherboards.

There are also things like this:

And, this one is pretty cool:

Nope, I put mine myself (sort of).
I didnt get around to reading specs on my card or trying anything myself. But, just opened up the spec sheet and here's what it says:

- Integrated NVIDIA TV Encoder
(HDTV, S-Video, Composite - OUTPUT)

- Integrated NVIDIA VIVO
(S-Video, Composite - INPUT)

I see the keywords S-Video/INPUT/OUTPUT... does it mean I can record and display then?

My card is EVGA NVIDIA 7800GTX KO.

... moral of the story - know your card

 yes yes, fiksal we should know all about the cards we use!!!!

on a side note X2 had an inbuilt recorder - i know because i kept bmping the hotkey all the time by accident   . it was something like shift r or something like that.

Im sure that X3 has one as well cause i think i had the same prob i had in X2, but i could be thinking of something else.

I was able to record a pretty good video with Fraps but it made the game laggy. If there is an in-game recorder, then that would be the best thing to use, I imagine. I know that the in-game recorder for Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 records excellent clips, but with no sound. It records a frame at a time and REALLY slows down the game. If you'd like to see a couple that I recorded from RTC3, go to:

The dual racing coaster and mine train are the ones that you want to see.

If you've got svideo out and in, the you can output to a DVD recorder or DVR. Then take that recording and plug it into the svideo in and record back to a WMV or whatever format the software that came with the card supports.

But, if anyone knows for sure if there is an in-game recorder and what the hotkey(s) is/are, then that would be even better.
