I have left two ships floating in space. One I had to jump out of the sector as a huge rash of pissed off pirates in nova's and I couldn't compete in my pitiful buster. I went back about 30 minutes later and the ship was still there.
The second one I left. I disabled a pirate falcon to 5% hull and damaged his shields so they couldn't regen. Almost not worth keeping, except he wouldn't bail out. I bumped into him a bit but he stil lwouldn't bail. So I left him. I came back after about an hour give or take time on SETA and he had drifted near a pirate base, still not working. I left came back later and he was gone. I can only assume he either was destroyed by something hitting him, another pilot shooting him, or he got fixed. Which would be a nice touch.

And another thing you might want to add:
I've been having ALOT of fun in Elena's Fortune for the past two nights. Its nicely stuck in between two pirate sectors. The reason that this is important (most of you probably already know this but here's a tip for those that dont) is that you get yourself a frieght scanner and an argon police license and scan everything moving through the sector. Its surprising how many pirates you can uncover posing as legitimate shippers. Then you can capture them and sell mass amounts of nice freight and then the freighters themselves (or save them for your factories). Nothing like capping superfreighters full of nice stuff.

Everytime I try to capture something, it ends up with no cargo or weapons or anything installed, even if I hardly scratch the hull. I guess that's something to live with for getting the price of the ship.
I'm very early in the game in Split Fire and just captured a Falcon just shooting out the shields with the beta particles and the buster you start out with. Not too hard.

Just to clarify
Are there only these two ways to claim?
1) Eject to suit and claim
2) Use illegal override software to claim
I tried to fly M4 as close as possible, say <20m, but no luck, so had to walk. One capture so far, a Falcon - or 76% of it. I have seen a couple suits after blowing up ships before. Too heavy trigger on bPAC(s)

I have a question about selling captured ships. Is their value significantly reduced?
I read that a Falcon costs nearly $2,000,000 but the Falcon I captured is 85% hull and only getting me $500,000 for the sale.
Should I instead keep it and fix it up when I have money later? I only have about $2000, I'm early in the plot normal game.

Just like anything, even if you get a ship that is 100% it will not sell for the same value as if it was purchased brand new. Just like the real world, the value depreciates once it is flown.
My recomendation, sell the falcon get the credits to fix your ship so it is easier to capture. Try capping a trading vessle and start trading. To build up credits faster. There are two ships you can use for trading that are nearly ready to go to trade for free, you just have to find them. I won't spoil it but you can look here on thef orums for more information should you want to find them.

My experience of capping in X2 was that if you knocked out the shields, and got the Hull to less than either 81% or 75% (was a long time ago, so can't remember exact figures), then used ion D's to just nuke the shields, you had an almost 100% cap record, just had to be careful not to have any friendly fire incidents with the Ion D arcing...
Not sure if this will work with X3, since I noticed while playing as the Bankrupt assassin that once my standing got too low with a race, thier pilots would no longer bail
Hope this is of use

Yes, if the hull is already damaged, you only need to use the ion disruptor afterwards to make them bail. Be prepared to be disturbed by spaceflies when using the ID, though...
At least in X2 you were. Haven't seen a spacefly in X3, but I haven't tried IDs yet. Be sure to grab a spacefly collector from Split equipment docks for extra cash.

You forgot the most important part of capping.
KILL ALL EJECTED PIOLETS OR CAPTURE AND SELL THEM AS SLAVES!
this is an important point so I will say it again.

and again
KILL ALL EJECTED PIOLETS OR CAPTURE AND SELL THEM AS SLAVES!
There is a VERY VERY nasty bug in the game, spacesuits will "Dock" with stations taking up docking ports and eventually you will no longer be able to dock in most places if you dont KILL every ejectee.

Oh no!
I didn't know there was this kind of bug. I've never killed the ejectees. Not been playing for very long, but I've captured 60-70 ships or so. Hope this will be fixed in a patch.
By the way thanks for the tip above about scanning freighters. I scanned a Vulture last night, and he turned red. He had 860 or so units of Crystals on board! I com him and ask him to surrender, but he refuses. Commence battle. After his shields are down he drops 220 units of Crystals and begs me to stop shooting. But I need his ship to carry the stuff anyway, so I keep shooting. He ejects when hull is about 70%.
It took me a while to sell of all the crystals, but it made me over 1.5 million credits.

Yes, it goes up! Pirate freighters are actually traveling inkognito in X3 compared to X2. They look like any neutral freigters, but when scanned they sometimes 'reveal' themselves. Their ship's name changes from for example "Argon Mercury frozen goods transport" to "Pirate Mercury frozen goods transport", and you are free to attack it, and get a reward if you have a police badge.Spektre wrote:So if you scan, say, an Argon Mercury freighter, and he turns red, and you commence attaking, does it not affect your race standing?
You also have an option to actually Com them and ask them to surrender (like mentioned above), something you don't have with pirate fighters. Not sure if this has any effect though, but I remember this was much discussed as a suggested option after X2 was released.

This is such a cool feature. It always seemed a bit lame that the pirate freighters made sitting ducks of themselves by appearing as bright red blips on your map. Not exactly what you would call smuggling.X-it wrote:Yes, it goes up! Pirate freighters are actually traveling inkognito in X3 compared to X2. Right, I'm off to clear the galaxy of pirate smugglers!
