So I will be preordering.
Isn't it 2 hours?

Fixed that for you. And before you counter with "loyalty" or "preloading". Please remember that steam charges developers extra per user who preloaded the game. So either egosoft will not allow preordering which reduces the preorder value to zero. Or, they will allow preordig and you should show them loyalty by not preordering which results in them getting a higher % of your money.

I don't mean to pick on you, but there is a downside and literally zero upside.

the upside is that it just appears in your library one day without you having to keep track of it

That's a pretty lame upside. If you're a fan, you're keeping track of it anyway.
If you want a different perspective, stand on your head.

You are eligible for refund if you have 5 hrs or less of playtime within 2 weeks of purchase for no reason needed. After that you can still request a refund, but you need good reason. Technical issues are always good reason.

It's not 5 unless it's changed recently, it's always been 2 hours.

I don't have any personal experience of the system but from a quick google, it is 2 hours at the following page:

That's what I thought. I wouldn't mind if they extend the time as 2h are a bit too short to experience if the game is worth it's price.

I think that if it would be 3 or 4 hours I'd be more keen to buy & test more games that with just 2 hours.

Hell it would be great if the steam could make "official demo time" where you don't have to pay for the game, but would be limited to these 2 hours of gameplay.

I dont understand the rebirth was not what i expected x4 fiasco thingy, they always said rebirth was a new engine and for that reason would not be X4 but a step in a new direction tech wise. So i took rebieth as game in of itself and not a X3 expansion x4 thingy.

As for buggy release i think all the game was really buggy et release. for me release coming from egosoft is early access. X4 will be the same for me and i will most lkkely preorder

It depends on what kind of bugs. X3 Reunion had a lot of bugs, but most of them didn't interfere with normal play. The bugs in XRebirth however, can stop you playing critical components of the game. For example it took a while for them to fix the issue with the cargo drone, which essentially brought certain part of the economy to a stand still.

I'll pre-order. Bugs are just extra protein where I come from. I'm curious though, the store page on Steam is saying a release of sometime in 2018--does that seem very likely?

As recently as Gamescom they said 2018, so we're still on track apparently. Things can always change, though.

They've been insistent that 2018 is still the target.

So far, there haven't been any strong indications this will change.

I watched the video from Gamescom and though I couldn't understand what was being said, I still got a real positive vibe from it. The visuals are solid, and the music (I hope that it's on the final soundtrack) actually gave me chills. Reminded me of how it felt to play XTC all those years ago when I first discovered and fell in love with the series.

I can't seem to find where I heard that. I think I heard it from a paradox dev but I cannot get evidence for it. What I have found though is that as a dev/publisher you don't get much say in if your game can use preloading. Valve has to first approve your game for that and they only seem to do it for games which expect very large userbases on day 1 (eg COD games). If you aren't one of those mega-publishers then you have to beg valve. To quote my game-dev friends: "valve only offer to preload if you roll a 20 three times in a row"

X Rebirth had pre-loading. Anything else sounds like speculation, as I have never heard of extra fees for it. Its a Steam feature as many other steam tools its sound ridiculous to me that steam would hurt its own features by such a fee.

Unless I see a credible citation, I call BS on it, sorry.

Bugs I'm less concerned about as ES has a good track record of fixing these 3-6months post release.

For me what I need to see is:

1. Features described by ES are actually working in the context of gameplay as opposed to simply being there, so some proper 'Let's play' type video's in the first few weeks.

2. Performance is acceptable, it took XR a long time imho before it was playable purely on a framerate basis.

3. What isn't there? Clearly X4 won't have every wishlist feature and we know it won't have some core features from X3... that's ok but I want to know exactly what has/hasn't made the cut for release.

Still looking forward to X4 its shaping up nicely so far on paper and in discussions.

I wont be pre-ordering, i did for Xrebirth and got burned, i didnt finish the campaign till about a year after release cos it kept dying or getting corrupted, Yes, ego has a good record of sticking with there games, and you can argue they stuck with xrebirth, cos yes, eventually, after releasing on the alpha, they have now finally reached release stage,

X Foundations looks brilliant....possibly, so did xrebirth, and while both had amazing upgrades to graphics, the cap ship systems and boarding, which i adore, the voice acting was god awful, truly awful, i wanted to mute every speaking part in the game, all of them. But most if not all of the x games have god awful voice acting in general anyway. So you expect that now.

With foundations i expect the same poor voice work so anything better will be a lovely surprise, but i wont be buying on release or before, never again, the ONLY way ill order this game after release for full price is if it receives 8/10 or higher across the board and people cant stop praising it, then ill give them full retail. Till then. Na, 20 euro or less is my max for all xgames now since the feeling of rebirth.

I might be able to make a decision if the release date was more specific than merely "sometime this year".
