This excerpt from the gamescon video is why I will preorder

"There will be extensions which will bring more races, their ships, stations and missions into the X4 universe.
That needs time and money. Our goal is to be able to deliver the first extensions withhin one year.
Release date and prices will be announced shortly."

It's a bidniz afterall, so if we want new stuff that builds off the base game, the guys need support and cash flow to make it happen.

Pre ordering was a thing back in the day when you go to shop on release day in order to guarantee a copy for you. Pre order nowadays has no meaning especially if its digital as you are guaranteed a copy off steam. Only boxed limited editions that might not be available on release day might be worth pre ordering otherwise i dont see any reason to do so. It doesnt help the developer at all weather u pre order or buy it normally as its the same product at the same price.

Baffles the mind.

These days especially when games are released and have the attitude of everyone has internet so we can patch bugs etc on day one or bit after release is why the scheme of pre orders should stop, total biscuit tried to stop em before he passed on and i reckon he was right to. Wait for player reviews or playthroughs then decide, dont support games if they come out buggy, support them when they are in a good state. Well thats my opinion.

I know egosoft are good with support but the habbit they have of releasing early in not such a good state needs to change.

Not advocating pre-orders by any means, but those with slow inet connections (yes plenty of those around) may want to have the game a few days before so they can pre-download and then be set to go on release.

Not saying its a good thing, just a valid reason why to do it, also you might get a hat or something. :-P

Pre ordering doesn't get you games early tho :?

If you have a slow connection if it were me I'd buy physical and hope it has all files on a few DVD discs and not a box with just a steam key. That or ask if u can download it at a mates or family member where he has fiber if it's an option.

Of course it does, you can pre-download most games a few days before launch. You cant play of course as its locked but you will have 99% of the game downloaded when it unlocks. Obvious day 1 patches excluded.

PS.: obviously there are many alternatives, this was not to say its exclusive, just to mention that the are cases where pre-purchase is a valid choice. Read what is there please.

A quick goolgle search would have answered that question faster than it takes me to answer it here.

Still yes, you could preload X Rebirth 6 days before release date.

I want to give Egosoft one more chance and support X series. I will pre-order X4 and I hope they will not fail. Bugs and freezes don't afraid me so much (after XR I know this will be repaired) as broken or absent mechanics. Don't hurry up, make X4 mix of best sides of X3 and XR - and it will be great game to play.

No. I want to see what the game has to offer before giving the developer my money. As if games like NMS haven't taught you anything.

That's a really bad precedent to set. I get why you are loyal and all, but even though I will likely buy this on launch week that is just wrong. To reward a developer for fixing a product that they broke or worse, never worked.

If it takes you five years to get the game you paid for, then wait five years. I didn't buy Rebirth and I'm not sad about that. But I will buy X4, not preorder, but if it doesn't work I'm going to refund it until it is better.

They've been at this for more than twenty years. We have to hold them to a higher standard than when they started...
To be fair, they've been at this for twenty years but they're still a small indie studio. We're not talking about people with AAA funding or even independently funded w/ a ton of money ala Cloud Imperium Games, here!

Remember, I'm making my purchase to support the devs more than to get the game at the outset. This is specific to these devs. and should faith be abused I can change my mind, but Egosoft has been good in the past. By no means am I saying everyone should buy this on faith, and to be quite honest unless you purely want to give Egosoft your money I *would* wait. But like I said, I like these people. I wanna see what they can do. I guess I kind of see it as a form of poor man's patronage vs. being a customer, but eh.

I got Rebirth on Retail on day 1, the bugs were terrible, but I endured through them until the game was in a workable state a few months later.
The Extra Content I got to Beta Test and keep after wards made the pain worth it.
But I've always stated, Rebirth was released before it was ready generally because the Publisher either forced them to or they didn't have the money to hold it off any longer.
I hope now X4 is the Rebirth that was meant to be released all them years ago, in a stable state on release.

There will be bugs, all games I've played have had a ton of bugs on release. It's hard to compare which game was the most broken X: Rebirth or Rome 2 Total War?
Difference for me IMHO was I knew Egosoft were going to spend years fixing Rebirth, that's what stopped me from going for a refund, plus all the Dlc for testing made it worth keeping.

I can't see X4 being in a state as Rebirth was, but I can't see it being bug free either. I'll be Beta Testing this on release, as long as there is a retail copy of the game, I don't download.

I ticked yes, though I probably wont but will buy it day one regardless. I did that with X:R though I only played it for 30 minutes and never played again. I really enjoy this series and will continue to support it.

Why not? Preordering holds no risk on steam nowadays. You can get a refund immediately if you see it is released in a broken state (you just need to stay under 3 hours playtime)...

So I will be preordering.
