I'm happy for you, truly. Some people however do have good and sufficient reasons for not wanting to use steam. Mine happens to be the fact that my gaming machine isn't network connected.

Don't assume everyones situation is the same, and respect other peoples choices.

I assume that is US$ right?

Received my english version and loaded at once, played the game but when i left and tried to restart i just keep getting told to put the dvd in the DVD player, which it already is. :?
Can you help me with this hang-up ?
Also when there is more actiuvity in a sector such as "fight" the game hangs, any suggestions here ? :?
Thanks

Well I’ve made the move and pre- ordered TC on Steam and just finished the Pre-load. This will be not only the first game that I have bought and downloaded on steam but the first game that I have actually bought online.

Normally I like to go the old fashioned way by the game from a ye olde PCe shop…e but where I like there are hardly any shops that sell PC games any more and those that do are all way out of date....seriously in the Curries in town there is a copy of Unreel Torment 2004 for sale at £32b as they don't even bother to move the old games. And I’m not going to get a £6.10 retern train ticket to Peterborough (the nearest city to us, about 20 miles away) just to buy a game.

However that said I have use steam since I bought HL2 and never had any problems with it.... seriously... all right the auto patch download can annoy now and then but other that that I can think of no time when I’ve ever been pissed at the service.

In the event Steam disappears, would you lose access to all the games you bought? I know there's an offline mode, so (presumably) you could continue to play anything already downloaded, but are you able to back up the files offline or transfer to another computer and still have them working? (I'm guessing "no" since that would destroy copy protection)

If you mean Valve went out of business or something like that, then yes. Valve can unlock the games for good, assuming that they were allowed to do this, for games available through Steam. Presumably, since this may not have been tested, you could then do a straight folder copy from one machine to another and run them without having Steam installed at all.

I would have ordered my copy of X3:TC though steam however due to the recent devaluing of the GBP I decided to save myself 10 quid and order it from Amazon instead. I think steam gives an option to add 3rd party games to steam. Not sure how that works though.

As for not being able to play 3rd party games on steam when not online...I bought X3:R off of steam but have a shortcut to directly to the .exe in the Steam folders which means I can play without connecting to steam (usefully when Talktalk disconnect your broadband for 1 month)

All you get with 3rd party games in steam is a shortcut in the list of games.

Perhaps Egosoft could add a "view stats" link on Steam so people can view a players progress in the game. If you're connected to steam while playing it would even tell you when you reached a milestone (as Steam call it).

I've seen that on other singleplayer steamgames. (!)

Just for fun, nothing important really.. =P

The only bad point about Steam that I've experienced is that the hash it cooks up is apparently partially based on your current user profile. If I load up Steam with an administrative account to install games and then go into Offline Mode, when I log into my normal user account it won't let me log back into Steam at all. I have to literally log back into Steam with my administrative account, put it back into Online Mode, log off Steam, and then log back into Steam just to be able to play with a normal user account. Kinda sucks, especially if I were ever to somehow get the last account to switch Steam into Offline Mode corrupted and be unable to convince Steam to unlock without some sort of techincal assistance.

I thought you have to pay tax on digital media ordered into the UK from the US?

Steam is getting large enough as a digital distributor where it would most likely never just disappear. Bought and absorbed by another company maybe but not disappear, which in that case they would be under the legal obligation to host the games for you instead.

Ecthelion: First it was anti-Boron slurs, and now the assumption that all Teladi are pirates! You better watch out, or the XCLU* will be after you guys...

In case there was any confusion, I was referring to the probability that the Boron would like Steam, since it's environmentally friendly. I hadn't considered the fish connection, because I view Boron as humanoids, not food as some of you Argon hillbillies do.

There was new art work for the Boron a year or two ago... They are in no way humanoid... I will grant they are intelligent.

I don't think I've seen that artwork - I had always seen them as humanoids. In any case, they still fall under the sentient category, so they should have the same rights as humanoid denizens of the X-Universe.
