wasnt it standard procedure back in the days before simple mass bombardment of flails to launch a mossie, and then target that, and shoot heavy ordinance at that mossie?
The osaka thingie would shoot down the mossie, but be totally oblivious to the heavy ordinance headed straight for it, because those arent targeting him.
Just sayin, youknow...

I think it's just based on the amount of shields left. It's the Autojump, your ships also have it (once you set it up).Lancefighter wrote:wasnt it standard procedure back in the days before simple mass bombardment of flails to launch a mossie, and then target that, and shoot heavy ordinance at that mossie?

Osaka saw his shields were under (insert value) maybe 50% and initiated the autojump procedure. Happens often in v. 2.0a.

I had this happen to me the other day... My marines were fighting inside an Ares and it jumped away. A minute or so later I had an Ares in a sector I hadn't explored yet!cezarip wrote:I think it's just based on the amount of shields left. Goodness, that little jump issue with the marines made me chuckle. You describe it so vividly, NS!
No but it's a shame of the pod and the men, clearly, but it's all in the game I suppose! It made for an interesting read though. Most people (not playing DiD) would reload after such a 'story twist', so I salute you for bravely taking one for the team!
Or rather, that pod of marines did.
Still, your story makes for a great read. Looking forward to the next installment mr Slug!

Good question. But I think the Ai does the gateless jump. However, every time this happened, it took me a while to find the ship again (it can jump 2-3 sectors away) and it was hard to notice because it become blue again. I never saw it near a gate but it had enough time to wander away.vbruzual wrote:I wonder where the Osaka would jump. Under the Gameplay Options menu there is a setup for "Monitors" and you can set each of your several monitors to "Auto-Target" or "Auto-Missile". Auto target puts your current target in a monitor and auto missile puts your most recently fired missile in a monitor.Llama8 wrote:Out of curiosity, how do you target your own missiles & get them on the screens?
One can also manually target their own missiles by aiming at them and hitting the "Target Under Reticule" hotkey which I believe is "t" by default.

In The Moon i was following an atmo lifter and it was a ways off the sector map going towards the moon itself. before i could "acquire" it it jumped away. needless to say i was dissapointed. but when i was on my way back to the military outpost it jumped back about 50km away from me, not anywhere near a gate, that was interesting

Whew! I just finished reading through this entire thread! Exciting stuff.
I've tried the Unholy Traitor start probably fifteen, twenty times now. Managed to get out of the first sector a few times. Once, I even managed to kill everything bar the last bounty hunter and cripple him, but he did a whole pile of damage to me before I got out of range, and before I got much farther a Dragon appeared and killed me. I've never got out of Split space. The whole thing is an exercise in frustration.
I'm a bit lost with all the acronyms people are throwing around, my only game so far has been sticking basically with Terran ships so I don't know about any of the other weapons. Is there a guide somewhere to the weapons and missiles and things?

That's just plain bad luck. I've had ships jump out on me after my marines were attached to them, but I've never had one jump while the pod was on its way. Oops.
As for the "how do I get my second atmo lifter out of here" dilemma, why not send the thing 200 miles off the ecliptic and let it sit there for awhile, while you go and get a spare ship/jumpdrive?
Usually the AI leaves my ships alone if I park them out far enough.

No need for bumping, and it's frowned upon anyway. I'm sure N-S's next post will keep it from falling. And if you can't find it, it's listed in the Ultimate Guide sticky thread. So no more bumping.

Ok, if Leo at al are busy sailing off at speed into the arse-end of nowhere then presumably at some point their boarding pod will run out of juice, at which point they should auto-eject. Question is where? Going to need to do a quick calc here.. hmm, average speed 480m/s.. full tank.. drop the 3, carry the two.. divide by 7. Umm, 75km 'thaddaway' give or take a bit. Right then, that's way out of gravidar range so I'm going to have to go locate them and pick them up. Swinging my Kraken around then I plot a course that's kindof 'thaddaway' and head off in pursuit..
A short time later I'm somewhat perturbed to recieve a burst-message squirt on my teams comm-frequency proudly reporting they've taken control of the ship. Perturbed because I'm very much under the impression at this point that they're approximately 65km in front of me. ish.
Some quick investigation reveals my initial assumption that they hadn't made it to the Osaka was perhaps incorrect. It would appear that they did make successful hull contact after all, at the same moment it jumped out, so I can only speculate that their contact reports were blanketed out by the effects of the jumpdrive activation. Sounds highly plausible, probably a load of tosh tho. Anyways, the important point of all this is that they're alive and allegedly now in control of a Terran Osaka! Cool, where?..
http://dbbr17626.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ut/83-1.gif
.. Aha, Jupiter 2, they jumped next door.
Sadly, whilst Leo and crew are requesting further instructions, I'm busy reviewing their situation and it ain't looking pretty. The ship itself is undamaged, it's even got shields! But no jumpdrive, and worse, no guns. And worser, they got some serious company. Worserer still, we're in Terran space so I'm not even in the position to make an emergency jump to aid them. Instead then I instruct them to make a run for the west gate and their only hope for salvation while my fleet makes a flank speed run for the east gate to Jupiter 2 to provide cover. Given I'm on the far side of Jupiter I'm not holding out much hope of getting anywhere near them. To be honest it would take a miracle to save the guys at this point..
http://dbbr17626.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ut/83-2.gif
.. but it seems my miracle supply is running a little short today. So long 'Steve'!
It's all a bit emotional really. One minute the team of battle-hardened mercenaries you've cared for and nurtured and sent to their almost-certain-but-never-quite-up-to-now deaths on so many occasions is with you and then suddenly they're lost. A sad moment. Then they're found again and you feel that warm swelling of emotion as you realise it's ok, you won't have to pay to train up another bunch of apes after all.. and then fate cruelly snatches your 100million credit destroyer from you.. (er, and your team!). A harsh mistress is Fate.
I may still have seven pods but with noone to man them that's my operations here over for the time being. So with heavy hearts we pack up and head back home to mourn our losses..

Looks like your Kraken needs an "In Memoriam"-type renaming - how about Steve - So Long, and Thanks for all the Ships?
