A ship with only turrets should fly differently than a ship with fixed main gun. (And agile but slow ship should fly differently than fast boom'n'zoom brick.) If the flight logic could get those features, then perhaps new ships for it to shine on would be warranted.

A ship with front gun has to fly towards its target. Flying towards a station or Xenon K has some undesirable side-effects. (The NPC seem to be rather good at keeping range). Turning broadside to target has the advantage that you can keep the distance more constant. (I do recall watching Phoenices back in 3.x circle Xenon station like traditional "indians vs wagons" -- although leaving shooting to the L turrets was less "productive".)


Naval ships, particularly battleships, do use indirect fire. The shots might actually be more effective from long range than close up (angle of contact, type of armor on different surfaces, etc). The only issue is hitting the spot. In X4 almost all weapons have same dps from all ranges (if they hit). Therefore, they get no advantage from getting closer to target station, but also have no reason to stay at max range.


A "real FLAK" on novel ship (type) could make it distinctive (e.g. like BSG Galactica's point defence).
