Looks good! I'm very excited about Rebirth now.
Here's hoping it does well!

I haven't been reading discussion for the reason given above. I'd rather not know anything about the game until I know it's not using steam. I couldn't see anything in this news announcement or on the info page, can you direct me to a dev post on the issue?EmperorJon wrote:It's Steam only. I thought the several hundred pages of discussion had made that clear...
If that is the case then have they said anything about the nosteam exes? In particular the last I heard about AP was that they were going to do them on a fairly minimal basis - they'll be one for version 1.0 of the game but updates might take a long time or not arrive at all. Has there been any mention of a more energetic schedule for Rebirth?
Well, I admit I don't keep up to date with the minutiae of steam updates but last time I installed it a couple of years ago for a steamworks game bought from Gamersgate it did all those things and I've just updated and checked that install and there's been no obvious change. Opening the steam client still shows a big STORE button and the game update panel had completely unrelated adverts on it.cherbert1701 wrote:When has the X Series of games EVER done anything like that? Basically something like Games for Windows Live is how it should be done interface-wise. All of the same features in-game (and automatic updates) but the out of game client is completely optional and there's no advertising or promotion of their store in the mandatory bits. If the newer steamworks games function like that then I'd be quite happy to buy Rebirth.

Wow!
Looks really fantastic Egosoft. I've really tried to be patient with this one and not give you guys any grief about the release. Looks like that finally paid off and this will be out just in time for my birthday. Can't wait to try it! I'll grab a pre-order off Steam as soon as it's available.
With all the interest in space games that Star Citizen and Elite have generated, hopefully you guy can cash in on some of those project backers. All your hard work deserves a pay day. And, with those games > 1.5 years out, I think their supporters would find X Rebirth a worth while investment even if they've not tried a previous Egosoft game.
Job well done... Congratulations on a ship date.

Anyone else notice how the Dovakiin & Dragons in Skyrim kinda sorta resemble the Immortals from Highlander? Every time a dragon dies I hear, "There can be only one."

Yes you will be forced ... at least your virtual physical body will be. But your avatar will be able to piloting various drones and maybe all other ships via virtual interface - it was showed on those videos, how it works.Garabae1 wrote:Erm, I just got an email about the Rebirth launch - So happy about that! But, someone please tell me you are not forced to fly around in the same ship for the whole of the game!

You can configure steam to work differently if you don't want to use the store. There's an interface section in the settings that lets you jump straight to your games library and bypass the store when you open it. As far as I've ever noticed there's no advertising in the games library part (Not that I look hard so maybe there is). You can also create shortcuts for your games so although you have to have steam running you can have it running in the background without ever needing to open it.NeverSnake wrote:Opening the steam client still shows a big STORE button and the game update panel had completely unrelated adverts on it.

I also took the liberty of giving Shack News the heads up:gato wrote:Also @ rockpapershotgunBigBANGtheory wrote:Nice to see Eurogamer and Kotaku picking up on the news in such a positive manner.

Great to finally have a release date. I'm skeptical though, given all the emphasis on the factories and economic elements in the trailers and such, I doubt X: Rebirth will give me the same sentiment of wonder and discovery I got when playing X2 the first time.
Let's see if they put more interesting things than factory complexes to visit, outside of the main quest. I also hope for little news tidbits from various places in the X Universe just like we got on the BBS in old X games. (NEW ONES! You're forbidden from recycling the same news events from past games over and over.) It would be even better if they were more interactive this time instead of just being writing, but I'd be content with written lore.

Yup, just noticed the recommended specs... funny how fast 'awesome' hardware becomes 'decent' hardware.
Memory and CPU upgrade incoming!
