No. Standalone Expansions are not a new thing. Thing of it this way:
A classic expansion would be installed parallel to the original game. It would use most of the original game's content, but add things to it, and maybe change some things as well. To run it, you would start it, like its own game, but it would use many of the resources of the 'core' game in order to run.
However, thanks to improving technology, better efficiency in game design, and overall more better choices, designers these days are able to put all the resources their games need, packaged right in with the expansions. This allows people who don't own the original game, to still buy and enjoy the expansion. It still draws on those same resources of the original game, but this time it has them packaged with it, instead of needing to rely on them already being there.
EDIT: On a different topic, can someone wiser in the ways of the world tell me abouts what £20 boils down to in American dollarinos?

When i saw that movie, looks like egosoft learned a bit from XTM ?? A lot of those things like ship balancing the XTM team did very well, so in the end, we all get an overall better game thanks to those outstanding modders.

Quote my whole post man. Sheesh.Xenon_Slayer wrote:It's not like there was a 3 year gap between X³R and X³TC. And as the BUILD video states, there are other new things.

Speaking money :
1 £ = 1.26€ = 1.96$
and the price of games are different in many countries
for exemple Spore in precommande is 49.99$ on a site (don't remember which) while it is 54.99€ in France, meaning this game is much cheaper in US than France (or Europe). 49.99$ vs 84.14$ we see the winner

SCUM : They may exceed you in number, but not in value.

a few months back, personally i dont give 3 hoots about exchange rate as i know in the end UK normally gets the dirty end of the stick, what with games coming out at $50 in usa and £50 in the uk. So i give up looking because i just dont want the stress of knowing just because were in the UK we are to be ripped off and taken the mickey out of.CBJ wrote:Er, when did you last look at the exchange rate? Was it just me who could have sworn that the Build trailer was being narrated by a Boron???
I was waiting for there to be some mention of the Queen or Kingdom of Boron... I'm hoping for a Teladi for trade... 'the profitsssssss...' and a Split for fight! Oh and ofcourse... an Argon for think!
Oh well I can dream!

You will be shoked when you will know prices in other countries. Just imagine price 5 times less than in USA.bob hope wrote:a few months back, personally i dont give 3 hoots about exchange rate as i know in the end UK normally gets the dirty end of the stick, what with games coming out at $50 in usa and £50 in the uk. It could be looked at one way that they just repackaged the models already available for free and charged for it. That's fair, but would it have been better if they completely ignored the XTM additions? Or would it have been change for change's sake? It's good that they recognized the initiative and creativity of the XTM team. It looks like they incorporated much of the XTM material and built upon it, while adding and improving lot more. So XTM gets rewarded for the hard work, and we get a nice expansion. Time will tell if it's worth the charge, but I'm excited about it. Still, I also hope we see even more additions/upgrades in the "FIGHT" video. "(if there will be one). "Syndrome wrote:Interesting, but I've always been a little disapointed. Now I'm sure there is more but the very fact that there's no new engine means it can't be all that much. The whole project just looks a bit cheap (especially ripping off XTM's models).
Over the three years they've released a small amount of new material for the game but... well... we'd rather have a new, better game than tiny pieces of supplementary material.
So far it looks like more effort was put into XTM than X3:TC. And c'mon - it's not like X isn't their only project.
In saying the above, however, I'll probably be a little more enthusiastic when the 'FIGHT' video is released (if there will be one).
