They still need enough money to start developing the next game in the series, though. Egosoft can't just shut down and wait for sales to accumulate over the course of years.
From what it looks like Rebirth has a much higher budget than previous games, so that's all the more money they have to make up.
Admitting you have a problem is the first step in figuring out how to make it worse.
Do we not get to part 3 of the release date saga until 100 pages of posts? I will do my part to help if that is the case.
I think X:Rebirth will come out in maybe at least another year or two. If it does not, that will be quite odd, almost peculiar. I'd say from analyzing the posts here thus far, that this game has an inverse LD50 of 1year. The other half that can survive this year without X:R will not be left unscathed however. Though they say that what doesn't kill you makes you stranger, so this could play to our benefit in the long run.
Btw I bought X3:R and it was a buggy mess. I procured X3:TC when it came out and I could buy an argon shipyard at a boron shipyard(seemed legit). Finally I've been sampling X3:AP ( I think there may be a war going on, let me check with my superior). Also, I've bought Star Citizen because I like freelancer more than this but after seeing Chris Roberts and how ugly he is I'm on the fence whether SC will be any count. Where was I? Oh yes, I will more than likely survive this harsh climate of no X:Rebirth.

Thank you for your valuable input, i think the game will be out when it is finished, now it is time for me to go back out in my garden and enjoy the sunshine.
@Gupstar; I think what I had coalesced into ignorant rhetoric may have been construed as some type of solemn statement. I assure you that I am not petitioning for the game to be expidited, merely aiding this most informative discussion on release dates reach part 3.
No one is complaining about development time. You need time to create any type of content. The problem in this case is the failure to provide the content in question at time the developer said it will be done. Now as CBJ already explained, Q4 2011 release date was an overkill on egosoft's part, which is fine, that happens. Missing the 2012 release date was a let down, but hey, that happens too, maybe not as often ( usually devs postpone 2-8 months, there are exceptions of course), but it happens. Which brings us to 2013. It's may, and we still have the ballpark figure of 2013, which is disappointing. Quick research indicates that ES (deep silver) tends to start their promo campaigns 1-2 months before the release, so August - December window is still open. Sad thing about that is that the 3 biggest open world games are coming in that period too .
Well Notchi, open world games are usually very buggy when released and are only playable after a few months and patches, so that means you still can buy all those games as part of summer steam sales next year
But yeah, what are those open world games? I usually know about all of those and none seems to be released any time soon. And the new carmageddon doesn't count...
Could you tell us which one? I follow videogame news fairly closely, and I have no idea what you are talking about...
I think they mean GTA 5 and Possibly Elder Scrolls online, can't think of the others. but how that is relevant to a space sim/action/strategy game I don't know, as I said in a previous post, people do not buy 1 game only and ignore the rest. They will buy 3 games and play three games but they may only go back and play 1 a second time.
I used to list PC parts here, but "the best" will suffice!
