That was a pretty smart move to give it away on steam, as I doubt they were selling many versions of it, as it had already been given away for free on the Epic store. While I played the game a few years back, it was with the green planet DLC, but I didn't own it, I played on someone else's version. While I have the Epic version, I don't buy games from the Epic store, but seeing as it was free on steam and the DLC pack was on sale, I ended up buying the DLC, so in the end they got money from me that they would never have got if I had, had to buy the base game, so given the game away actually made them money.

Surely it's just economics. New DLC, people will only buy the DLC who have the stock game (and still play it). They may also be able to see numbers who play it (and how often) and drop off rates.

Making the base game free removes the "Well, I won't buy *that* - look at all the DLC!", so lowers the entry barrier to sales of the DLC.

They lose nothing as they're attempting to convert non sales anyway with the base game (sunk cost?), and lower the barrier to buying the DLC for an entire new audience. I wouldn't be surprised if it shifts a lot more units than those buying the DLC directly as they owned the game already.

Speaking of which, took advantage (lulz) of the DLC sale as I've owned the game since shortly after launch and enjoyed it. Of course, the lulz is because they made a sale off of someone who had no intention of buying DLC by... getting me to part with my money when I had intention to do so on the belief of "bargain!"

Kinda reinforcing the point of sales :D

Fallout 4 GOTY on Steam for GBP8.74, until 26th October.

I'm quite tempted by this. Any of you played it?
