Chapter 13: Legitimate Businessman?

As I'm making my way through the corridors from the military outposts docking clamps down to the mess hall I hear a familiar voice behind me.

“Captain!” Huh?

I turn to see Sophia running up to me, that unnerving smile of hers playing across her face. The pale blue dress she was wearing yesterday has been replaced with a blood red one, cut to reveal the ample curve of her bust. For her age she really is an alluring woman.

“Sophia,” I nod at her, not really in the mood for another of her cryptic conversations, “did you just call me 'Captain'?”

“Well of course Kirlack. What else am I to call a man who commands his own capital ship?” Heh. I hadn't thought about that.

Despite my protests she follows me down to the mess hall, where some of my mercs are taking their breakfast before getting back to training, and joins me at my table. Suddenly I've lost my appetite. So whilst I'm poking my food around my plate and downing pint after pint of water she goes into great detail about how I'm going to need a working crew, and have I thought about who I'm going to employ? Well, no I hadn't given it much thought, since I've only just gotten the ship back to safe space.

“And how the hell do you know about it already anyway? I've only just docked her and gotten her systems up and running again.” She throws me a coy smile and bats her eyelids.

“Kirlack,” she says, again using that condescending tone that one day's going to earn her a bullet in her back, “you really think you can jump a capital ship into the sector and it wouldn't come to my attention? Besides, I've always got an eye on you and your activities. For instance, I know you had a run in with an assassin last night, the one they call 'The Huntress'?”

“How in Gunne's name did you hear about that?” I ask, feeling my anger rising. “Let me guess, one of my pilots is Yaki in disguise?” Again with the coy smile.

“Now now,” she says, “those of us that work in intelligence gathering know better than to reveal our sources.” Right. How stupid of me to think she might actually fill me in on the details. “You know she was one of Cali's associates?”

“Cali?” She nods. “My Cali?” Again with the nod and the smile. Well, that throws a new light on my would be assassin. If she knew Cali Le we might have something to discuss other than how she knows my name and whether or not I space her. Sophia seems to be reading my thoughts again.

“It might be worth your time offering her a job Kirlack. Enjoy the rest of your breakfast.” And like that, she was gone, like a whisper in the wind. I swear that woman is the single most terrifying person I've ever known.

She's right though. If that damned lizard is willing to work for me I'd do well to hire her services. IF. Of course, then there's the whole thing with Aaron Bailey to deal with. If she's loyal to him....she's going out an airlock at first opportunity.

So, with all this in mind I send a message to the Helix for the boys to jump down here and pick me up, and eat some of my breakfast whilst I'm waiting for them. It's not a patch on Sam's cooking, but it's enough to keep me going. Once I get the message ping that Double Helix has docked I head down to the docking clamps and meet up with the boys. Sam is busy sharpening his blades in the kitchen, ready to prepare breakfast for the rest of my crew, whilst Thane and O'Leary compare scars from last night. Rossi and Baritone are debating the merits of the basic Mamba over the Vanguard variant and each seem to be making the same argument, that their ship is better.

(sigh)

“Alright, can it. We got a would be assassin to see to. Has anybody checked on her this morning?”

“She's fine.” Thane growls at me. “Well, she's stopped bleeding and she's still breathing anyway.”

“Stopped bleeding? How the hell did she manage that?”

“Something about that combat suit she was wearing boss.” O'Leary pipes up. “It looks like the ones the ATF use during boarding operations. One of the features is a coagulant layer to prevent blood loss.”

“Is that a fact? “ I ask with a grin, to which he nods. “Any way we can get our hands on some of them?”

“Fat chance. Quite how she managed to lay her claws on that one is a bit of a mystery. ATF tech of any kind is off limits to offworlders.”

“Uh-huh.” I grin, tapping the stimulator circling my head. “I guess it's about who you know then, eh?”

So, with my boys in tow I make my way down to the brig. Whilst we're on our way down O'Leary sidles up to me and says: “You're going to give her a job aren't you?”

“What makes you say that?” I ask him, raising an eyebrow in his direction.

“Oh come on man!” He says indignantly, holding his hands out wide. “You drag me out of a bar brawl that likely would have cost me my life.” Well, yeah I did, so? “You sign Baritone on after he tried to steal one of your ships.” Alright, guilty as charged but it was a good call. “And Thane and Sam both came out of another bar fight, which you ran into willingly, specifically to try to recruit the big guy!” I blink at him a couple of times, not sure quite where he's going with this. He looks kinda exasperated.

“So what's your point Stephen? You don't approve of my recruitment method?”

“Well, I sure as hell wouldn't' sign up an assassin that's got me on her target list, but that's not my point. You're a bloody magnet for troublemakers and ne'er do wells boss.”

“Yeah?” I chuckle, “And which one of those categories would you fall into?”

“Oh I'm definitely a ne'er do well boss.”

By now we've reached the brig and are both chuckling quietly as we step up to the lizards cell. She's standing in the middle, tall and proud, as though she were waiting to accept a medal. Again I'm struck by that sense of honour she carries herself with.

“Huritas.”

“Missster Po-”

“Don't. That's the one thing that will absolutely get you killed, 'Huntress'. For a moment I see the anger in her eyes, but then it passes, replaced with cool professionalism.

“Very well, Kirlack. Have you dessssided what to do with me?”

“I'm considering my options. Right now they boil down to space you or employ you. Which would you prefer?” I see the surprise in her eyes at the notion that I might give her a job. This might just work.

“You would employ me? Why would you take such a rissssk?”

“For starters you're obviously good at what you do. Tell me, can you fly as well as you can hunt?” I see the anger again as though she takes the question for an insult, but I can sense her reading me, looking for deception, and finding none. Her back straightens, bringing her to her full height, and she nods, once. “Good. That's one reason I might hire you. Another is that word is you were a friend of Cali Le?”

“Cali hassss been my ssssisssster in battle, many timesssss's!” She snarls, letting the anger well up inside her. There's a marked change in her behaviour, something...dangerous, savage even, but she bites it back down and relaxes a bit as I hold her eye.

“Good. That's another reason I might hire you. Cali Le was my friend Huritas. She was my flight leader. She died two days ago in a botched raid in Black Hole Sun. I had to watch as her Tenjin got ripped to shreds by an Argon frigate.” There it is. The tell-tale sign of grief at a lost comrade. This is what I was looking for. She stands silent for a moment, and I can see the fury raging in her eyes, before she takes a deep breath to steady herself.

“So,” I say, grinning, “what do you know about Aaron Bailey?”

“Only how he contactssss me and where he deposssssitssss my paymentssss's. I don't make a habit of getting friendly with the Sssskullssss's.” Confirmation. Good good. Loli Lu's information was accurate. Which probably means she was telling truth about Big Mek. That's going to be a headache somewhere down the line.

“Alright. So what possible reason could he have to give you the one piece of information that would most certainly get you killed?” I can see that pain again in here eyes, that horrifying truth.

“He ssssset me up.” She hisses quietly. “He told me you were one of his smugglers gone bad. I think he wanted us to kill each other”

“Now why would he want that?” I ask, cocking my head at her.

“Becausssse he ssstill blamessss's me for the death of one of hissss lieutenant's.” Oh really? Interesting.

“That sounds like Bailey. If he genuinely believes you've wronged him he won't stop until you're lost to the void. Believe me, I know.” Okay. Decision made. “Thane?”

“Boss?”

“Let her out.”

Sam and Thane both look like they're about to protest, but a silent glare from me shuts them both up before they can utter a word.

“Issss it time for me to die?” She hisses as the big man unlocks her cage.

“No Huritas. It's time for you to join my crew.”

“And if I refusssse? Or I try to complete my contract?”

“If you refuse I'm going to have to space you. And we both know that your contract with Bailey will be null and void because we both know he knows you've been caught out. Nobody as paranoid as him sends out a hired killer and doesn't keep tabs on them. So, the way I figure it, working for me is your only realistic option.” She's scowling at me, but there's a measure of mirth behind the anger. She's in, and she knows she's going to fit. “Besides, it'll be fun.”

So, with a new pilot on my roster it's time for us to head back to Freedom's Reach and work out which of my ships she's going to be flying. Once we're docked and the boys are settling in to eat I take Huritas down to the docking bay, where she take an immediate fancy to my Blastclaw Prototype. When I ask why she tells me she likes the pirate designs, and that her last fighter was a standard Blastclaw.

“Ok then. What do you want to call her?”

“Gossssshawk three.”

“Three?” I ask raising an eyebrow.

“Both of my previous Gossssshawks's perisssshed.” I have to bite my tongue to not laugh at her lisp. I think I'm going to enjoy her company though.

So, whilst I leave the crew with instructions to get the BCP up to scratch with shields and weapons it's time for me to hop back in the hot seat and see what's happening in the 'verse today. After the command chair aboard Unexpected Perks being back in the cockpit of my Tenjin feels kinda comforting, like coming home on a cold winters night and settling in with a hot whiskey and a joint.

What? I like my creature comforts. Problem? No? Good.

As I pull up out of the gate in Danna's Chance I almost run straight into a poor unsuspecting Boron tech runner who's got far more shields in his hold than he can make use of, so I offer to alleviate him of his burden. He happily agrees to my PBE diplomacy and I call in Swag Bag to clear up the mess. His TM though has given me something to think about. I now have six pilots in six ships all operating out of the Helix, which only has docking ports for three. Since my original point in buying the Helix was to give us a mobile base to fall back to and re-arm, as well as making long distance travel for all the fighters a hell of a lot easier, it only seems prudent to me to set up another TM. With this is mind I send messages for the guys to tool up and jump down to Senator's and buy another Chokaro ready for them to set up. For now it's working under the name 'Lunacy Veil'.

I've also revised my wing set up. Rather than have all of my guys working as my direct wingmen I've split them up into two separate groups. Rossi will be my wing man in his Mamba, while O'Leary and Baritone are under orders to flay the nuts off anything hostile that Rossi targets. They're going to be based out of the Helix. Huritas, in her slow ass BCP, is running as my other wing...er...lizard...and will have Thane and Sam riding her wing, all based out of Lunacy Veil. What should happen now is that when I issue a kill order to my wingmen Rossi and Huritas will jump in first, followed by their own wingmen, all delivering massive firepower to target. We'll need an opportunity to test it, but right now I'm only getting taxi contracts from the locals. I don't much fancy making that run in the Cypher, so I call in Giggity and blaze north.

Halfway across Brennan's I spot another fare for pick up, although this one wants a passenger transport meaning I'll have to call in Puddle Jumper. I agree to the 'nids terms, more because I want his nine hundred thousand credits than anything else, and tell him I'll be back shortly to collect him, before ordering my TP to the factory and shooting through Olmancketslat's and into Bala Gi's Joy. With my first fare dropped at the pirate base I start making my way back, only to get a call from a nervous Boron wanting to get to Danna's in a hurry. It won't take me that long in Giggity, so I pick him up and blast back into OT, where I spot an Argon wanting some dirty work done. I take him up on his offer despite the poor pay for a couple reasons. Firstly it'll give me the chance to see how my new set up works with my pilots, and see Huritas flight skills first hand. Secondly it might go some way to restoring my reputation with the federal government, which I'm going to need at some point to pick up a few choice pieces of software. My Targets are four Paranid freighters making for the soyfarm in Split Fire, and since they're 'nids they won't want to go through Argon space, meaning they'll be taking the long route down through Brennan's, which works out well for me. So I rush through BT into Danna's and drop off the nervous Boron, before heading back to the rimes factory in Brennan's and picking up the 'nid wanting to go to Hatikvah's. There's a group of 'nids there now as well wanting to get to Priest's Pity and paying a healthy sum for the privilege, so I pick them up and make their drop first, before jumping to the HF west gate and rushing to the pirate base.

By now my four Paranid targets have done exactly what I thought they wouldn't and made for Argon space, but according to my contact they're still in Farnham's, so I've still got time to catch them up before they get themselves done in by the military fleets in Elena's Fortune. So I hop back to Freedom's and switch over to Indie Cypher. With a quick jump to the FL south gate I pick up my targets and call in Double Helix and Lunacy Veil, and give my guys the kill order for the first freighter whilst I take the second. Rossi, O'Leary and Baritone make it to target first and wipe him out in a heartbeat, HEPT and PAC fire ripping him to shreds as I tangle with the second. Huritas leads Thane and Sam in to lay into the third with PAC and PRG and I see a faint explosion to my left as I close on the last. I didn't even bother to fire at the last one, just let the boys mop up. So far so good. The job doesn't have the impact on my reputation I was hoping for, but I am at least no longer at shoot on sight status in Argon core sectors.

Once the guys are docked and the TMs jumped I hit up the local stations for more work. I accept another transport job for a group of Boron going to Atreus' Clouds, but despite my telling them they'll be leaving in my passenger shuttle as soon as it docks they insist on boarding Indie Cypher! Bloody squids.

So I sit and wait for Puddle Jumper to arrive then pull my pistols and tell 'em to get the hell offa my ship sharpish before sending them on their now less than merry way and jumping back down to Brennan's to hook up with Giggity. That little episode with the squiddies has got me thinking. A lot of these high profile transport missions only need a small fast ship, like Giggity, only the Disco doesn't have the sort of space to make it viable, plus it's not especially fast for it's class. Hmm.

I spend a bit of time looking over the Fujin variants available at the shipyard* in Senator's Badlands and finally settle on my very own Fujin Sentinel, before clearing a space on the Helix and sending it to pick up my new ride. Modelled on the Paranid Pegasus she's a nice little ship, 477m/s top speed, a single 5Mj shield for protection and a whopping M class 68 cargo units. With the Mk1 turbo booster transferred across it can hit a staggering 1158m/s! That should make my taxi missions a little less tedious, and give me a speedy get away should I need it. Introducing: 'High Profile'. It feels good to have a Fujin again.

By now my missioning has pushed me up into the seven million bracket and I decide it's about time to start shifting my assets into one place, rather than having them all spread out around the 'verse. The fact that Huritas knew where to find me, and that the likes of Shinzo also know where I'm based from have highlighted a few holes in my security. Yes I'm aware that I have no security. That's kinda the point, numbskull.

So with my new super quick scout ship to keep me occupied I decide to take a little tour whilst I make arrangements for the guys to jump down to the Yaki EqD and get jumpdrives installed on their fighters. They're going to be jumping around the universe picking up my freighters for the next little while, before I give them the rest of the day off and use the TMs to retrieve all of my fighters. Two of my engineers, Sendy Cornell and....bloody lizards...Towisaris Ugalirias Yahandis the fourth, have finished their current round of training and I intend to set them up repairing Unexpected Perks before I set them to work on some of my knackered fighters for either refit or sale. So for now almost every ship I own is being sent down to Senator's until I work out what to do with them. That way I can get the bulk of my freighters set up for quick repair and refit more or less any time I need them.

All of this is quite tedious and time consuming, so I zip all the way through through the pirate sectors, picking up the occasional abandoned freighter as I go, before turning north into Split territory. With High Profile on autopilot most of the time I can concentrate on getting the guys where they need to be and switching jumpdrives and cells around so the freighters can make the jump to Yaki space, before the boys jump down there to switch the jumpdrives back. It's slow going as so many of my TS class ships are in pretty bad shape, but long term it's worth the hassle.

In the meantime, I check in on my two traders who I've spent so much cash upgrading. Foologos is more than happy bringing in profitssss for me over in the PTNI region and Yagosias is finally ranked highly enough that he can follow in her footsteps. For now I'm going to set him up in Blue Profit, where he can trade with every Teladi sector from Siezwell to Company Pride. That leaves me with an opening for a new sector trader in Weaver's Tempest, but none of my freighters are fixed up and ready to go yet. I do lay out the cash to get the Mistral fixed up though, ready to replace my trusty Caiman Tanker and take up the mantle of Swag Bag II. I don't want to use the tanker for sector trader duties though, I have plans for it.

As I'm passing through Family Rhonkar I take a covert operation to follow a Boron in a 'cuda Sentinel up in Rhonkar's Fire. He's easy enough to spot but then he seemed to get lost. No, I didn't lose him, the poor bastard just didn't seem to know where the hell he was going. I swear I sat and watched him fly between every station in the sector, look like he was heading for every gate at various intervals....I even wondered if he knew he was being watched and just decided to wind me up, but whatever it was after an hour and a half of staring at his ship from eighteen clicks away I was pissed off, so I buzzed him a couple times to get his attention before he scarpered. Meh, the payout on the mission wouldn't have been worth the effort anyway.

Somewhat displeased yet again by the stupidity of the Boron as a species I hit the turbo and blaze south as fast as I can back into Hatikvah's, where I pick up a very high profile taxi for a couple of Argon wanting to get to Akeela's Beacon. This could be my way back into their good graces, so I snap up the opportunity and turn east. Heh. Akeela's offers another transport job which I take and assign Puddle Jumper to before I head south through Light of Heart into Montalaar and then east across the shortcut into New Income, where I find a trio of abandoned freighters. So they all get claimed and jumped back to Senator's via Lunacy Veil and the crew.

I head through Ianamus Zura and up into Eighteen Billion, where I find a second trio of freighters which I again claim, before dashing across X-347 and into Scale Plate Green. The crossing of Xenon space has never been so easy as it is with High Profile and the turbo booster. From SPG I head up into PTNI and make a tidy little deal with the local supply Albatross' captain, a very helpful little lizard by the name of Luuligos Ugalirias Hohindras the seventh. He's going to be shipping my first factory to it's home in Profit Centre Alpha.

What? No, of course I ain't going straight. Don't be soft. This is all a clever ruse. See, from here I can get into all sorts of shady dealings. Blackmailing the locals into buying only my product for instance. But also it gives me somewhere to train up both commercial agents, which will come in useful, and commodity logisticians, which will be essential to my long term plans. So I drop a five million credit float into the station and set my buying prices for the required energy and sunrise flowers at seventeen and twenty one credits respectively. That ought to keep my freighters buying a steady stream of both. Sale price for my nostrop is set at one hundred and ten credits per unit, meaning that I'm only selling at close to full price. With such a shortfall of oil in this region I reckon I can get away with that.

The Caiman Tanker formerly known as Swag Bag gets set up as CAG 01, whilst the other I have hanging around the SB shipyard gets fixed and fitted up to become CAG 02. I'll need to hire pilots for them of course, but being in Teladi space that won't be a problem. My two Disco Vanguards, Giggity and Problem Solved, Sam's former scout, will become my training ships for getting a couple of CLS pilots on their way, and my two local traders have been homebased as well, both to give them somewhere to sink their profits, and to offset the cash flow as my new commercial agents bring in the resources. It'll take a little while before it's worth my while selling off my product, and I don't want the station cash reserve running dry in the meantime. Everyone working for the station is under orders to go no further than Scale Plate Green to the south and Patriarch's Keep to the north, so I should be able to monopolise the local nostrop market.

Oi. Setting up factories is a pain in the ass! Time to look for something a little more fun.

So I set my course for Two Grand and get an interesting offer as I clear the event horizon. It's a good price for a defensive heavy fighter, so I take it and send it down to my refinery to await pickup. My cash reserves are looking a little thin now and my marines coming up through their training are eating what I've got left at an alarming rate. So I look through my ships and start assigning repair orders for some of the fighters I've picked up. Unexpected Perks is up to an impressive ninety one percent hull integrity thanks to the sterling efforts of my two engineers, meaning that when the boarding crews are ready for their first live op we have a fully functional warship available for the job. More importantly though it means I can pull my engineers over to the TMs and use them as mobile workshops. It'll take a fair while for them to get the fighters up to scratch, but soon as it's done I can refit the useful ones and sell the rest, giving me a decent cash injection.

(sigh)

I'm starting to feel like a corporate meat puppet.

So, I move north into Patriarch's Keep, where I'm offered a used Iguana Vanguard for a truly outrageous price and a Mamba for a reasonable one. I take the fighter and tell the other guy to shove his transport in the nearest star before taking a taxi mission back into Two Grand.

You know, I'm starting to think there's something up with the lizards. Why you ask?

This is why.

Seriously? Did I get away so clean on that last one that they're about to let me do it again? And again they're only offering a pittance for the return of a ship worth millions upon millions of credits! Well, fine then, but don't give me any shit when you don't see it again.

The ship's over in Tharka's Sun, so I zoom over there and immediately pick it up due north of the east gate and fly on over. En route I call in to the Helix and get the boys to pick me up two 1Gj shields from the Yaki equipment dock, before jumping them up to meet me. I close on the frigate and transmit the command codes only to find....oh by Gunne...twice in one day? Sweet!

So we transfer the shields over and some software from High Profile, enough for me to get the ship up to speed and ready for the jump down to Senator's. I beam over to the Minotaur's bridge and start the recoding sequence ready to wait out the coppers before sending the guys back home and my little Fujin down to the refinery. I manage to bring the engines online and get the ship up to it's astounding 23m/s....

God job I've got a jumpdrive and cells aboard.

I turn the ship for the west gate and start cruising whilst I complete the recode and settle into the command chair ready for the inevitable. As I'm passing the ore mine on the outskirts of the system I notice a station defence mission. Well, how fortuitous! If that just happens to tie in with the lizards showing up I can claim targeting malfunction under duress....until I notice that there's a Yaki task force to contend with. Bugger. And it was such a nice plan...

Okay, back to plan A, wait for the fuzz, then disappear across the universe. Suckers. They managed to get a few shots in this time but nothing my charged two gigajoules of shielding couldn't handle before the jumpdrive kicked in.

Hah! I just stole another missile frigate! And the damned stupid Teladi still haven't given me any grief about it.

Back in Senator's I set course for the equipment dock and start rolling, slowly. With the ship on autopilot I take the time to move some ships around, selling off the few repaired fighters I don't want and some of the freighter hulks that are far beyond repair. I set up a few of the really knackered ones as storage for my various wares, energy, weapons and shields, tech....you know. Splitting it all down into categories made it a whole lot easier to manage. I've somehow managed to amass nearly two thousand units of nostrop, so I ship that all up to my refinery ready for sale. With some more cash lining my pocket I decide to splash out on fixing up the Caiman Miner and setting it up as my new sector trader in Weaver's. I don't want to homebase this one to the refinery in case anyone checks into the station records and sees illegal trading. Stuff like that gets the whole setup investigated by the Profit Guild. No, for now that station has to remain strictly legitimate. Hey, I like that. I think our new Minotaur's found itself a name.

It feels like an eternity waiting for the frigate to dock but I'm grateful of the time to sort all my administrative crap. When I finally feel the solid 'thunk' as the clamps connect I shut down the ship's systems and make for the airlock. When I step through into the station I find Sophia there waiting for me.

“Two in one day Captain?” She asks flashing me that nerve wracking smile. “I think you'll be needing this.” She hands me a data pad with a list of names, lots of names.

“What's this?” I ask, caution and curiosity peaked.

“A list of people you might want to look into recruiting for your little war fleet. Just something you might want to think about, if you intend to make them combat ready any time soon. Of course. If you intend to sell them....” She says, making to take the pad back.

“No, I'll hang on to this, “I say and wink at her, “it might come in useful. Thank you Sophia.”

“You're welcome Captain.”

“You know, you keep calling me that Sophia. Am I supposed to take that as an official promotion?” She smiles, wider than usual.

“I'll be seeing you.” And with that she turns and walks away. Now, I trust Sophia, as much as I trust anyone these days, but she's never been this helpful before. Either she wants something from me, or worse she expects something of me, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what. Maybe this meeting with her on Nividereos will be a little bit more forthcoming. I hope so. I frakking hate riddles.

In the meantime I've got a list of what looks like potential crew for my Cobra, and perhaps enough for the Minotaur as well, although right now I'm not sure whether to keep that or sell it. From what I know about missile frigates the Minotaur has a fearsome reputation for bombarding targets with heavy torpedoes, whereas the Cobra would make a better boarding platform. I might make Unexpected Perks the home for my boarding party and all the equipment they need, and set up 'Strictly Legitimate' as my heavy duty combat support. I do have a significant number of missiles for it now, but without a supply line to keep them coming a few skirmishes will soon deplete that, and I can't be sure of my piratical activities supplying replacements. I also can't afford production facilities of my own...yet. Hmm.

For now I'm going to get the boys to pick up Indie Cypher for me and head back to Freedom's Reach to look for some more trouble. There's no jobs worth doing so I head north up to Brennan's Triumph where I see the local pirate clan have rebuilt their station! So I take a look at what kind of work they're offering and they tell me they need a convoy wiped out. Alright boys, I can do that, especially since it'll earn me over a million credits. I take the slow path down rather than jumping, and get another kill mission from the pirate base in Hatikvah's, for a group of Boron moving through Gunne's Crusade. The money's not much, but they're squiddies, so it's all good.

When I get to Clarity's End I move into the centre of the sector looking for my 'nid targets. Two Demeters, a Dolphin and a Vulture, nicely packed together all moving my way at a snails pace. Lucky for me I have three hammerhead missiles in my hold, so I cue one up and launch it at the Dolphin. In my haste I didn't stop to consider the two Paranid border control Perseus that where flying past them at the time, so when my missile hit and took out three of the freighters it took out the M3s as well. Oops.

The Vulture had been just out of range of the blastwave so I had to finish him up close and personal like, but as soon as he was down I got my payment and turned for the east gate. I didn't get any grief for killing those two Perseus pilots even as I passed through Third Redemption, so I'm guessing nobody noticed. Once I reach Gunne's I catch up with my two Boron marks, erase 'em from existence and receive my pittance. With that done I head north to see what other Boron shipping might be available, when I come across this lot. Bloody insects. Good job I have PBGs on board! You just can't beat fire as a bug repellent. The scouts melt under the heat of my guns, but the M3 survives long enough for me to switch to PBEs and then bails! Nice! Absolutely useless to me as I have no hope of arming it, but I'm sure it'll fetch a decent price once my repair crew have looked at it. So I claim all the abandoned ships and call in Lunacy Veil and Double Helix to transfer jumpdrives to the freighters and collect the fighters. Once they're on their merry way I turn and plot the long flight back to Freedom's. It's getting kinda late in the day and I missed lunch.

Don't kick yourself...it was um, meant to be a joke.

I too jumped the gun a bit, I should have used ';)' but the thought didn't occur to me.

Oh well, no harm no foul.

Cool chapter. You're a lucky bugger. It took me a week of scanning return missions before I found Unsuspected, and you get two. Yeesh.

Cool, I'd hate to think I've fallen out with one of my pilots :D

Yeah, I've been very very lucky so far. The mission text fix script helps though, as now I can see what they want returned before I accept the job. Still no Shrike though :p

Good to see Huritas having made her complete entrance, sorry I haven't been on and around to add in some bits and pieces from her end :P Shall make sure to do so at some point in the none-too-distant-future.
Sorry, were you expecting a witty one-liner?

Chapter 14: Road trip!

By the time I've made it back to Freedom's Reach the guys have finished running the latest acquisitions to the shipyard and equipment dock in Senator's Badlands, so I get them jumped up to me and we meet in the restaurant. Sam's about to complain that he's supposed to be the cook, but I just pass him a beer and tell him to sit his ass down.

“Relax man,” I laugh and take a pull on my drink, “I gave you the rest of the day off, remember?”

“Oh, we remember.” Growls Thane. “We've been bored frakking stupid running all those busted up freighters about. What the hell are you going to do with them anyway?”

“Yeah boss, “says O'Leary, “what are you gonna do with a load of trashed freighters? Why not just sell 'em on?”

“Because somewhere down the line they'll be a damn sight more useful to me in one piece and fully functional.” The Teladi waitress has arrived by now and takes our order. It's kind of amusing watching my crew deciding what to eat. Huritas, Sam, Thane and Baritone all go for spiced chelt salads, whilst O'Leary, Rossi and myself each order a steak. I get the impression Rossi only ordered it because it's the most expensive item on the menu. I think he's still trying to figure me out. Trying to test how far my generosity goes. After all, I'm paying for dinner.

“So,” Sam grunts at me through a mouthful of chelt, “what are you going to do with the ships?”

“Fix 'em up and put 'em to good use. Oh hell, I don't know where yet Sam,” I say as he's about to ask another question, “but I reckon some of them will go on to become logisticians working out of the refinery. Others will start local trading up in the Split and Teladi systems where we've laid out the satellite network.”

“X2 sagt Bussi auf Bauch so many freighterssss will be cossssstly.” Huritas hisses quietly.

“Aye, that it will. Which is why only the ones already in good repair are going to be fixed up and refitted for use. The rest can stay put for now until we can figure a means to get them repaired without spending every credit I've got.” Huh. I've never seen a lizard nod, sage like, before.

“Can we get to the matter at hand please?” Booms Baritone across the table, to which I raise an eyebrow at him, questioningly. “Mate, we're bored stupid. I thought working for you was supposed to be fun?”

“Oh,” I laugh, “desperate to get out in the trade lanes and cause some havoc are we?” Much to my amusement all six of them are nodding. Alright then.

So we finish our meal and grab another beer whilst I lay down how the we're going to do things. I'll take formation lead, with Rossi's Mamba and Huritas' Blastclaw Prototype flanking me. Thane and Sam will be acting as Huritas backup in their Solanos, whilst Baritone and O'Leary will be Rossi's in their Mamba Vanguards. Since 'Goshawk III' has turrets she'll be using those for missile defence, so she's going to load up on Wasp and Dragonfly missiles. You know, something for all occasions. Thane and Sam's Solano's will be packed to the gills with Mosquito's to provide missile screen to everybody. Because Rossi is flying the Mamba, which has no turrets, he'll be loaded up with mossies as well, as will 'Fightin' Irish' and 'Questionable Content'. That should provide us with some significant missile defences.

For weapons, Thane and Sam are still running four PACs each to give them some punch up close and personal, and two PRGs to give them a little bite at a distance. You know, I like the Solano, but it's really geared more for defence than attack. Unless you're fielding fifty plus....maybe I should steal a carrier at some point? Anyway. O'Leary, Baritone and Rossi are each rolling with four HEPTs apiece and four PACs, giving them a huge punch and the speed to really make use of it. Huritas' BCP doesn't mount HEPT, so I've given her four PRGs in her main banks and IREs in her turrets. That ought to catch any incoming missiles quite nicely.

“Alright people,” I radio to my wing across the void, “let's keep it tight and not get killed. We're working, not hunting folks. No open pillaging, we're looking for missions.” Affirmatives across the board. Time to be bad guys.

We start cruising up towards Danna's Chance and I immediately notice an issue. Huritas' Blastclaw Prototype is too slow to keep up with me at full burn, meaning that I'm going to have to keep my speed under 156m/s. It's not a huge cut on the Tenjin's maximum, but it does kind of annul the point of a fast attack wing. Hmm. I may have to rethink my options there. It can wait until this little trek is over though.

Once we hit Danna's I spot a convoy mission for a pittance, but take it anyway, just to get the ball rolling, and head up into Brennan's Triumph. Once we hit the sector the local pirates offer us a good price on another convoy. I think even the guy offering the job was a little shaken by the sheer look of glee in my eye. So I took the job and we pushed on across the system, spotting a couple of abandoned ships as we went, a Nova and a Demeter. I know I'm on the clock to reach my two groups of targets before they make it to their destination, but I'm not one to pass up free stuff. With the two ships snagged and on their way back to Freedom's we head up into Olmancketslat's Treaty. One of the local pirates flags up as hostile, but he doesn't make a move on us as we fly past his Kea, so I tell the guys to leave him be.

As we're passing the special weapons factory I get a call from the desperate Argon owner, wanting us to defend his station from the Yaki. Well, no sorry mate, I'm not about to go against my own. Good luck. With word of the station's impending doom apparently spreading amongst the inhabitants it's only a matter of moments before I get a cry for help. Well, for that kind of money I'm not going to say no. So I make the diversion to the station and call in 'Tidal Traveller'. I've decided to retire Puddle Jumper to training duties for my marines, as the Advanced Express is faster and has the bigger cargo hold, giving it more capacity for transport jobs. It's also been homebased to the refinery, meaning it can happily jump from there to wherever I need it, pick up the fare, drop them off at their destination and then jump home to refuel. An ingenious plan if I do say so myself.

Once the two rather scared passengers are aboard the TP and on their way we start for the north gate and into Bala Gi's, only to see the two marks for my high paying job, twenty kilometres away....docking at their destination. Shit. There goes one point six million credits. Frak. The other two targets we catch up to just inside Farnham's Legend and wipe them out for our pittance. Feeling a little disgruntled from the way that turned out I swing us back down through Olmancketslat's and Brennan's into Danna's Chance. The locals have heard rumour that the Split are coming to attack their PBG forge. I don't really want to cross the Split, but after failing that big payout mission I'm in the mood to kick arse. So Split arse it is!

We take out the two Vipers before they can get more than a couple of shots off and the handful of scout Jaguars they brought with them all speed into the station itself....bloody Split. All anger and honour and not a shred of common sense. Still, we got paid and that's what counts. Right?

With the threat gone one of the lizards at the forge calls me and offers me a good price for another convoy hit. It's not as good as the one I missed out on, but it's still close to a million credits if I can get all four. They're in Atreus' Clouds so we turn and swing back up through Bala Gi's Joy into Farnham's and wait to ambush them at the gate. Heh. They come on through, one by one, and we lay into them, one by one. I do enjoy my job.

With another mission success chalked up we look at the jobs being offered in Farnham's. There's another worried lizard at one of the plankton farms wanting somebody to protect his station. Expecting to see another couple of bombers, and hoping if I do one of them might bail, I accept the job. Oi. That's not what I had in mind. Still, they ain't packing half the firepower of my wing, so we barrel into 'em and show 'em how it's done. Alright, a lot of the M5s crashed into the farm, but we still won. See? Hell, they even left me a couple of bonuses. So I claim the two fighters and call in Double Helix to pick them up before putting a call in to the other plankton farm to see what work's available. Oh really? An abandoned Viper you say? Well, of course mister lizard I'll go grab that right now.

Note how I said nothing to him about bringing it back. It's down in President's End, and we're just about to turn and make for the south gate into Elena's Fortune when I get another call for a group going in the same direction. So I call in Tidal Traveller and meet it at the farm, usher my passengers on board and send them on their way before we high tail out of the sector.

As we cross Elena's I notice a Heavy Centaur Prototype. I want one of those! 154m/s, 800 Mj of shielding and it can mount an impressive array of weaponry, including CIGs, PBEs and Ion Disruptors in every one of it's twelve weapon slots! For now I don't have all the tools to take it, so it gets put up one on of my monitors. From there I can keep tabs on it even when it's in a sector where I've got no local assets. When my marines have completed their training and gotten a bit of experience jacking big ships, we're going to have that one.

So, we cruise on into President's End and immediately spot the Viper on the far side of the sector. I've got just enough cells aboard for a short jump, so I kick the jumpdrive into gear and reappear a few seconds later at the west gate, leaving my crew to follow behind me. By the time they're caught up I've reached the ship and claimed it. When I look in it's hold though....well I'll be damned. Another armed ship. Heh.

I call in Double Helix with enough shields to fully outfit my new bomber and transfer a jumpdrive across from the still docked Falcon Vanguard. With a quick injection of cells it's ready for a getaway when the Teladi police arrive to ask questions and I send the Chokaro back home. We wait out the seventeen minutes on the clock, and then my employer starts complaining. Is it? Did I? Awww, what a shame.

When the coppers show up I order the Viper down to Senator's and we form up a defensive ring around it whilst it makes the jump. As soon as the bomber's gone though the Teladi turn and make for Home of Light, making no move on us at all! If their intention is to follow the ship to it's destination they're going to have to fight through the sector defences of the Yaki. I don't much fancy pissing the Argon off by taking them out in their sectors, especially after I worked so hard to get them back on side, so I leave them to it. They won't get past the north gate of Senator's Badlands.

So, with another ship snagged and no more active jobs, what to do next? I've not taken the time to map out the Argon home sectors around Argon Prime, and given that I've got a pair of missile frigates that need crew I might need to get on their really good side. With this in mind I set us a course through the north gate and into The Wall.

There's no missions that grab my attention, and the proximity of so much Argon hardware sets my teeth on edge as we cross the sector headed for The Hole. It does give me a chance to catch up with my marines training schedule though. Two more of my engineers have completed their training so I get them set up to work with Miss Cornell and....the lizard. You know what, I really need to make an effort to hire some non Teladi personnel.

(sigh)

Whilst we're on the subject of lizard personnel, I've set up Hirussusis, my pilot for the Caiman Miner, as a local trader around Tharka's Sun. Keeping the Split economy going as well as the Teladi should give me access to most of the technology and weapons I'll need. This has left me with a gap to fill in my trade fleet, which my repaired Caiman is going to have to fill. So now I have another lizard by the name of....Ganatos....somebody somebody the fourth. He's been busy keeping the Yaki stations going down in Weaver's Tempest and is almost ready for a patch of his own to trade in. I'm thinking I might set him up in Rhonkar's Fire and let him trade all the way from Thuruk's Beard up to Family Zein, but we'll see.

We slip through the gate into The Hole and find....goop. Green goop, and lots of it. I knew there was a reason I'd not come out this way before. I don't much fancy searching through it for the gates, but luckily there's a Split weapons dealer....flying a Skate? Okay, it'll do. He's headed for the equipment dock at Antigone Memorial, so I fall in behind him and follow. The few stations we pick up on scanner range aren't offering anything worth taking so we carry on through to Antigone, where we draw another blank and push on into Power Circle, which finally offers up some work. Luckily the soldiers I'm transporting aren't fussed which station they go to, as long as it's in The Hole. So I call in Tidal Traveller to collect them and then spot a defence mission for the local ore mine. Aha! More pirate fighters to wail on.

Or not.

I blaze towards the two bombers in the hope of distracting them but I wasn't quick enough to stop the barrages being fired, and from that range there wasn't a damned thing I could do to save the mine. Nor was I about to risk being caught in the blast radius, so I turned tail and ran. The station wasn't so lucky.

So, down another mission and having now cost the Argon a station in one of their sectors I'm back to trying to be friends. We scout out Herron's Nebula and Cloud Base North West, where we take another transport mission for a group going to Antigone. A quick peek around Three Worlds reveals nothing but a steady stream of Boron traffic coming out out of Kingdom End, so we turn back south. My current status amongst the squiddies is not high enough to risk a trek into their home system. I'd expect nothing less than to be skinned alive and dropped into the salt water oceans of Nishala*.

Instead we cruise back across CBNW and into Ringo Moon where I get an amusing call. I don't know if the guy was stoned or what else he'd been taking, but I want some. See, he thought there was some kind of Xenon protection racket and that they were going to attack his factory. I tried telling him he'd been had, but he was adamant so in the end I took the poor fool's money...and the bloody machines jumped in.

Frakking Xenon. Now that's an evolutionary step too damn far! Furious that they could even conceive of such a thing, given that they're machines I gun my engines and tell everyone to fire at will. I'm not having this. The Xenon aren't a species, they're a frakking malfunction. One that we 'fixed' pretty damn quick. With the sector clear again our employer pays us our wage and cuts comms, probably on a run to get something to calm his nerves. I swear man, now I've seen it all. Xenon extortion? That's just the last straw.

“Fall in people.” I radio to my wing. “We're stopping up at the trading station for a drink.”

Once we've docked and found a quiet bar with only a couple of patrons, we were standing at the bar talking about that run in with the machines. Sam's take on it is that if they're evolving maybe they'll be less likely to keep randomly attacking everything in sight, whilst Baritone and Thane both think they should just be exterminated. Or decommissioned. Or just plain busted into atoms. I opt for the latter. Rossi and Huritas have both had run ins with them before and try to avoid them like the smell of bad chelt. I think it's only O'Leary and me who see the possible implications of Xenon 'thugs'.

“Look,” I say, pausing to down the rest of my beer and signalling the barkeep for another, “they can't be doing it on their own. Somehow, somebody has to be at least suggesting the possibility. Otherwise why would they be asking for money? What the hell do Xenon need credits for? I'm telling you, someone is behind this and it ain't the machines.”

Then it hits me. Earlier this morning, as I was crossing X-347 I saw that Argon headed for the station in that sector! What the hell was his name.....Pico Rana? Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was it. I wonder....

“You think somebody got the machines to hit a target for them?” Says Baritone, sniggering. “Come on man! They're psychotic killing machines for frak's sake. All they wanna do is ruin anything non Xenon.”

“Up till today I would have agreed with you.” I reply, taking my beer from the bartender and then getting nudged by Sam who's own bottle is empty. Cheeky bastard. So I grab one for him as well. “But think about this. Just this morning I saw somebody trying to access the Xenon station in 347. Why would anybody do that? Unless they've got something to gain.

“You think it's possible?” Booms Thane putting his empty bottle on the bar. Oh, for crying out loud.

“Let's have another round for everyone mate.” I say to the bartender, who nods and smiles before getting the rest of the drinks as I turn to O'Leary. “Yeah I think it's possible. I don't know anything about Xenon programming, but I'm betting your lot do.”

“My lot?” He grins. “You mean Terrans?”

“Well I don't mean gingers Stephen.” That draws a chuckle from everyone except Huritas. I don't think she got the joke. “Yeah I mean Terrans. After all you created the first ones, right? So it stands to reason that some of your people would have a good knowledge of their base programming.”

“Maybe boss, but information like that is going to be under ATF control. Getting at it, even if you had access to the Sol system, would be nigh on impossible.” Yeah, I was afraid of that. Still, something to consider should the opportunity arise. Getting my hands on some Xenon tech would certainly be interesting.

So we're just about finishing our round and laughing about some of the rucks we've had today when one of the barflies walks up. Now, you might say looking at me or some of my crew that we don't look like pirates. I mean, yeah, we're a pretty strange looking group but nothing about our dress screams 'Pirate!'. This guy though...how he's managed to sit around in an Argon core sector and not get picked up by security is beyond me. He's at least as big as Thane and built like a brick shithouse, with long brown hair that reaches the bottom of his back. His beard is grown out down to his chest but I can see from the one eye that he's not as old as it makes him look. His left eye is covered by a black patch with a flame shaped red jewel and the whole left side of his face is covered in burn scars, pretty bad ones at that. Yeah, this guy says 'pirate' and so far he's not even opened his mouth.

“Can I help you mate?” I ask as he walks right up to us.

“You a 'mercenary' crew?” He rasps at me with a voice that sounds like iron scraped across stone. I nod at him. “Don't suppose you'd be looking for a pilot?” Huh. Would you look at that.

“Depends. What's your name pal?”

“Ardentes. Ardentes Somnium.” Oi. And there was me thinking Kirlack was a strange name. “Friends and comrades typically just call me 'Flame'.”

“Hey, hey I know that.” Says O'Leary snapping his fingers. “That's Latin. Means er....burning...burning vision? No.....burning wish? No....ah!” He says snapping his fingers again. “Burning dream!”

“That's right.” rasps Ardentes. “That some kinda problem?” Hah. I like this guy.

“Barkeep. A drink for my new friend here.”

So, the eight of us chat for a while, me quizzing O'Leary on how he knows Latin, a language that was supposedly dead on Earth hundreds of years before humanity took its first steps into space. He says his cousin, the one that designed this cortical stimulator I'm wearing, taught him some of the language when he was young and he pursued it again when he was at college. I take the time to find out what kind of experience Somnium has and it turns out he likes something fast that can mount PBGs and shares Sam's love of all things explodey.

(sigh)

“Alright. I got a Mamba we can try you out with. No PBGs for now though. I wanna see how you handle yourself on my wing first. And you're gonna have to wait till we regroup and head home. Is that gonna be a problem?”

“Wherever home is, I can wait till we get there. Who am I riding with?” He rasps at me, staring with that one eye. Oi, and I though Shinzo was creepy.

“You'll ride with me in my Tenjin.”

“Tenjin?” He says, lowering his voice. “You're Yaki?” I nod silently, watching his reaction, but there's no change in his body language, so I'm guessing he's ok with that. “Your whole crew?”

“Just me.” I say and smile at him. “You know my brethren?”

“Only by reputation. I've never worked with them before.” Notice how he said worked 'with' rather than worked 'for'. Hmm. A proper merc this one. He's the kind who works as long as the money's good, but there's something else there as well I can't quite identify. Whatever it is I like him.

So, with drinks finished and our new pilot in tow we make for the docking bay and head back out into space. We've still got a few sectors to scout for work before we reach the Paranid Border. I've no desire to head into Argon Prime, but I do manage to pick up a cartographer who fills it in on my map for a small fee. So we move south into Red Light and pick up another run for my TP taxi service which nets me eight hundred thousand credits, before heading East through Home of Light and south into the Ore Belt. As we're passing the Plutarch HQ I get an offer for a used Mercury Super Freighter which I snap up, and then another military transport. With the sector mapped and a couple of abandoned freighters found down by the SPP we finally head west.

Cloud Base South West is a tiny little system. Even with just a duplex scanner you could enter the sector from any gate and instantly pick up the other two. It's also on the border of Paranid space, meaning that there's a fair amount of 'nid freight traffic comes through this way. Given the lack of missions we've found on our way down here I'm tempted to start hitting them just for the small reputation I'll gain with the locals, but I hold off. I think we're going to risk a little trek through the Paranid core sectors on our way back to pirate territory.

As we're moving across the sector I get a message ping from Unexpected Perks telling me that Ulmanckotsat, one of marines in training, is ready for his first op. He may not be the best of fighters, but he will at least make a decent meatshield for the ones that are.

Now, I'm not sure if I missed something before we crossed the event horizon into Emperor Mines, or if something happened when we first arrived in sector...but somehow Rossi's done in his ship. When I comm him and his bald head appears on my screen he just kind of shrugs at me sheepishly. Right. Now, I'm not too fussed as my repair crews can fix that up. BUT. What the hell happened and is he going to make a habit of it? I bloody well hope not.

So whilst I'm looking for work amongst the 'nids....which I'll admit I'm not proud of, but then, I'm also not too proud to take their money....I call the Helix in with Miss Cornell and her now five strong crew of engineers. Rossi docks and lets them get about doing their job, while I go about making a deal for a transport job. With Tidal Traveller on it's way I dock and meet with the Paranid passengers.....

Yeah, it was hard going. The upside was that once they had reached their destination I'd gained enough reputation with 'em to guarantee us unshot at access to their core systems. So we shoot across Paranid Prime all the way to Priest's Pity, where we encounter a Boron weapon dealer in a Kea losing a fight with some pirates. I love salvage work. So much money for so little effort. So I call in the Helix to collect it and leave Miss Cornell and her crew to fix it up. It's too slow to make an effective fighter so it's going to be sold at the shipyard. Once it's docked and my TM is on it's way home we head north into Split Fire and I breathe the sweet free air of pirate space. Metaphorically speaking of course. Being cooped up in the 'civilized' systems is frakking horrible.

We slide through the east gate into Brennan's Triumph where I pick up another group of 'nids wanting transport to the soyfarm in Split Fire and paying a tidy sum for the privilege, so I call in the Traveller and send them on their way. That's it though for work in this sector, even the local pirates don't have anything, so we drop through the gate into Danna's Chance. The master of the rehab facility is demanding aid from a threatening group of...Boron? Seriously?

Seriously. Naturally they don't put up much of a fight and we lay waste to them for our pittance. The 'cuda and one of the Makos bail under fire leaving us a nice little bonus. I'm just about to call in Double Helix to collect when it occurs to me that Kea should be ready for sale and send it to the shipyard, where it nets me three million, five hundred and seventy three thousand, nine hundred and twenty six credits.

Hmm. Twenty million credits. And that's just in my personal account. The refinery has managed to double the five million float I left it with. I was going to wait until my merc crew was ready for boarding operations, but my flight crew is getting a bit big to manage without some serious hangar space. Time I splashed out on something big.

Now, you might be asking yourself 'why spend twenty million credits on a TL?'. Firstly it can serve as a fully functioning mobile base for my rapidly expanding fighter crew. With twelve docking slots and a huge XL cargo bay with thirty four thousand units of space it can carry all my spare equipment that's currently spread out across three freighters, meaning I can outfit and refit fighters much easier. Secondly, being a capital ship I can keep a full contingent of up to twenty marines aboard meaning that long term I can make it a training hub for my engineers. Thirdly it gives me access to station construction without having to find and hire a TL for the job, and even with my spare gear and a couple thousand cells for jump fuel it still has enough space for even the largest stations, meaning I can take construction contracts at will. All of which gives me a great deal more flexibility.

So, I send it on to the equipment dock to pick up the gear from my storage freighters and then down to the military outpost to meet up with my fighters. Including O'Leary, Baritone and Rossi's ships I've now got four Mambas and three Mamba Vanguards, so it's time we shifted things around a little. As much as I like having the Solanos they just don't have the weapon options for a big forward punch, so they're going to be relegated to defence duties. Sam is being upgraded to Mamba 'Problem Solved III' and Thane to Mamba Vanguard 'The Bad Touch II'. Despite much grumbling about her beloved Blastclaw Prototype Huritas is being shifted to Mamba 'Goshawk IV'. The BCP is just too slow. Somnium is assigned Mamba 'Burning Wish'.

It takes me a little while to set everything up and we've idled down to the Hatikvah's Faith south gate by the time all the ships are set up and ready for new pilots, so I jump in my new homebase, 'Long Term Plans'. Gunne damn but it's good to see your efforts pay off. I dock the Cypher and make my way up to the bridge, where Miss Cornell and her engineering crew are just checking everything is ready to go. I was a little taken aback when she saluted me.

“Captain.”

“None of that crap Miss Cornell, that's not how I run my ship. I don't mind you calling me captain, but no more salutes, okay?”

“Understood sir.”

(sigh)

The trappings of leadership. Still, it's rather satisfying watching my crew coming in to land. As the rest of them dock and make their way up to the bridge I get a message ping that Ha t'Plp, my intended squad leader, has completed his training. He's taking up residency aboard Unexpected Perks with his Paranid room mate. With a little luck they'll keep their violent tendencies to themselves until the rest of my crew are ready and they can all beat on the same target. For now, I set my Ryu to jump into Freedom's Reach and tell my little gang of thugs, thieves, assassins and pirates to go and find themselves some quarters. I've got enough food aboard for Sam to cook to his little hearts content, and even had enough delaxian wheat transferred that he can set up his little brewing project. I hope he's as good as his word, this lot are costing me a fair bit in beer money.

Whilst the guys are settling in I've got more administrative crap to do. Ganatos, my new local trader in Rhonkar's Fire, is coming along well, and my latest sector trader down in Weaver's is also ready for his own trading region. So his Demeter Super Freighter XL has been jumped up to Family Pride. He'll overlap with Ganatos a bit, but it keeps that whole corner of the map covered. I've had High Profile laying out navigation satellites in every Split and Teladi sector from Patriarch's Keep to Company Pride, all the way up to Ceo's Buckzoid, the Boron border. There's trade opportunities for two, maybe even three, more local traders between Seizewell and Family Whi, but after that I'm going to have to head into the eastern territories.

My commercial agents have decided it's time to start selling nostrop from the refinery, and at the rate they're shifting it I'm going to need to add another refinery and complex them together. If I do I might see about adding a flower farm as well to offset the local demand. All of that's going to cost three to four million at least, plus the extra freighters I'll need to get fixed up for CAG duty. Still, at least now I have Long Term Plans to ferry stations back and forth. With the purchase of the Ryu though my credit balance is looking a little thin again. I'm not too worried as my pilots are only costing me three hundred and fifty thousand per day from my personal account, plus their five percent cut, but that's extra income for all of us. Everybody else except the current Weaver's trader is funded by the refinery. But if I'm going to expand it, I need more work.

It takes a while to find my crew in the massive expanse of the Ryu's hold and corridors, but I eventually round them all up and we make our way down to the docking bay before winging our way to the gate. Once we hit Danna's we get another cry for help from the rehab facility, this time against a Split strike force. Hmm. I don't want to go upsetting the Split, but I could really do with getting straight with the pirates. That little fiasco up in Power Circle cost me a bit of standing with the clans. Besides, it can't be that bad, right?

Oh shit. I hope those bombers aren't armed! The Jaguars almost immediately sacrifice themselves in ridicu-speed runs at the station, whilst I send Huritas, Flame, Baritone and Thane at one Viper and line up on the second myself with O'Leary, Sam and Rossi on my wing. It's a brief struggle and there's a couple of nukes fired, but my guys have an extensive missile screen. Each ship is now stocked to the gills with mossies, and they're all covering each other, and me. The first Viper bails, but the shots are already in the air so it burns. The second proves a little more stubborn and goes down with his ship, leaving us with a nice payout. I send my boys their cut and we push on into Brennan's.

As we're passing the pirate base we get a call to eliminate a potential threat. He's flying a Gladiator, but he's down in Priest's Pity. I take the job but I'm not sure I can make the flight there in time, and I didn't bring enough jump cells for the crew. Yes, I'm an idiot. I don't fancy using Long Term as a means to get there since....ya know, he's flying a Gladiator, and I've already seen what bombers can do today. TLs don't have anything like the shielding of a station. So I jump down in person and tell the guys to follow behind me. It'll take them a little while to catch up but it's my best shot of making the mark.

I land at the north gate, with no energy left for another jump. My target is showing at the far end of the sector, nearly sixty kilometres away. Even with the turbo booster this is going to be tight. Plus I can't get there with no shielding left, that'd be frakking suicide. So instead I use turbo pulses, hitting it for a quick boost and then cutting it, letting my momentum carry me forward whilst conserving my shields. As the timer ticks down into the two minute mark I'm in firing range of my mark and his wing of mates hasn't even blinked at me yet, so I rip into his shields and he immediately flips hostile. I hear missile warnings and strafe down and away, bring my PBEs to bare on him for long enough to rip his shields off before swapping to EBCs to chew through his hull. My turrets are busy knocking missiles out of the dark, and I'm too busy to check if they're nukes or not.

Suddenly my target explodes in front of me and I get a 'mission complete' message from my pirate employer. The rest of the Gladiator's wing up and vanish, leaving me to contemplate the missiles still coming my way. I hit the boost and and take a look to see both my turrets firing furiously behind me, then a series of small explosions and silence. Not nukes then I assume?

I start cruising towards the northern gate and my pilots catch up with me few minutes later. I considering heading back into pirate space, but decide instead to take another little trip through Paranid territory. So we head south into Emperor's Ridge, where we spot a Khaak cluster hanging about, and launch a remote guided warhead at it. Closing.....closing....BOOM! I should hire out my services: 'Kirlack – Professional Bug Masher'. Wonder if I should put that on my business card?

Further into the sector we get an offer to patrol against possible Xenon incursion. Did somebody go and stir up the machines? I'm seeing more and more anti Xenon missions. We take the 'very hard' mission and fight out way through...one wave. That's it, one wave of chicken shit Xenon fighters who broke at the first sign of damage. When it was done and we got paid there were a few leftovers which we picked up and called in Long Term to collect. They'll be jumped down to Senator's, fixed up and sold off, as soon as possible.

I don't want to push deep into Paranid turf, so we turn west for the gate to Duke's Domain. On the way we get a request for a highly illegal factory to be built in Empire's Edge. That's more than 100% pure profit and I don't need to worry about hiring a TL. I just send remote orders for Long Term to hop over to Ceo's Sprite and buy the factory. We'll meet it in Empire's Edge. As we're passing through DD I get a couple of freighters for sale from the 'nids, who apparently think highly enough of me to sell me ships! So I take a good price on a Demeter and a Demeter Tanker which is in near perfect condition. Then the 'nids really take me by surprise when I get offered a used Perseus Vanguard as we hit Empire's Edge.

I call in Long Term and drop the station, making myself a quick one point seven million credits. The fighters we picked up after the xenon patrol have all been repaired and sold, so there's room for all of us aboard the Ryu, plus my new second hand Perseus. I'm just thinking about jumping us down to Yaki territory to put in for the night when I spot a thing of genuine beauty. First opportunity I get I'm stealing an Ares.

With everyone aboard and Cornell and her crew working on the latest acquisition I make the jump to Senator's Badlands. My third fully trained marine is ready to go, but it's a Boron so I make sure he has quarters of his own. After all the credits I've spent getting him trained I don't much want him being eaten by Ha t'Plp and the 'nid. Huritas and the boys are settling in for some much needed rest, so I set the ship for the north gate and go back to administration.

(sigh)

My two CLS pilots in training have both made the rank of Cargo Messenger, meaning they're experienced enough to use their jumpdrives. So I call them back in to the refinery to await their new ships, and fix up the Demeter I just bought from the 'nids. With that repaired and kitted out I send it up to Profit Centre Alpha and switch over one of my pilots, Yahinussos...somebody...frak it. Anyway, he's now jumping around the few military outposts I can openly trade with, those in Ceo's Sprite, Rhonkar's Fire and Eighteen Billion, picking up boarding pods and dropping them off at my Cobra. As I find more safe havens to trade with I'll add them to his list, but for now it'll do. I may have to set him up as jump fuel replenishment for Long Term, but that might put too big a drain on the refinery. Hmm. I wonder if I could set up a power loop...not yet, I don't have anything like the cash for that. But at some point, being at least self sufficient for jump fuel would be a bonus. That's all a long way off yet though.

My Hades bomber has been repaired and set up ready for operations. I've only got eighty two tomohawk missiles, but it's enough to do some serious damage. For now it's operating under the name 'Special Delivery', which I thought was quite appropriate. All I need now is a pilot for it. Leaving that much firepower in the computer's control is worrying. Somnium mentioned some experience as a bomber pilot, so we'll see how well he fits with the crew and make a decision.

We cross into Ocracoke's Storm and then onto Savage Spur, where I spot a Paranid Deimos smacking down some of my brethren. There's no way we can stand against that kind of firepower, short of using a load of my missiles aboard Strictly Legitimate, but she still needs a crew. Oh alright, so I'm keeping them for when I need to save my own ass. Wouldn't you?

Not wanting to risk my life, my crew, or my twenty million credit ship, I make the jump clear across Paranid space into Split Fire. If that Deimos noticed us coming out of Yaki turf it might put two and two together and I might watch my current good standing with them washed down the drain.

As we're crossing the sector I spot an abandoned Solano which I claim and collect. It takes a fair while to manoeuvre such a bulky ship as the Ryu and whilst I'm waiting I get a message ping that my next marine is ready for action. One or two more and we could potentially make a play for an M6, like a Heavy Centaur Prototype. As I'm waiting for the gate queue to clear I get another one, bringing me up to five. For M6 and TM ships that might do it, but I reckon I'd lose too many of them. Only two are seasoned enough fighters to realistically survive the close quarters of a corvette.

We finally cross over into Brennan's and pick up another abandoned Solano and a high paying transport mission. I can't dock to greet the passengers, but I call in the Traveller anyway while Lunacy Veil bounces to PCA to pick up my scout. As soon as it's within range I beam over to it, catch up with my TP and greet my paying passengers with a smile. Since the crew have already crashed for the night, I bounce my TL back to Senator's and send my passengers on their way. Whilst my guys are getting their beauty sleep, I'm going to see what trouble I can get into with High Profile.

Follow this link to know the truth! :p

Sounds good, but remember, even in space beer needs 3-4 weeks brewing time :p

Assuming your favourite is the Elephant then? Same as me? I would have waited to steal one, but like I said in the story I needed somewhere for all my ships, rather than keep buying more Chokaros.

As long as Sam doesn't blow up my 20 million credit ship, I don't give a monkeys :D But if he stinks out the corridors don't blame me when my marines have it out with him :p

As for the medusa, I wouldn't have a problem letting you take it, except for the speed. The BCP was too slow to be an effective part of my fighter wing with a top speed of 159m/s. How is the Medusa going to work with a top speed of 143m/s? I suppose I could relegate Sam to defence duties, but I rather like having him on the attack wing :D

EDIT: Link for Tenjin/Medusa/BCP comparison

The Medusa has marginally better weapon energy and shielding, but the Tenjin is far faster. Anyway I intend to have an all Tenjin assault wing at some point :D

Actually, as much as I love the Elephant, my favorite has to be the Orca. Reasonably quick, with the third largest cargo bay of all the TL's.

I have Elephants primarily because with the CODEA machinists, they do 149m/s.

Plus the Tenjin has the best weapon compatibility across the board.

*In the Backup weapon locker, Sam starts his brewing experiments*

WhooooooooooWEEE time to brew up some FUEL!

*Pours basic ingredients for typical argon spacefuel*

YEAHH a Good start!

*adds Ingredients from Curries*

Woo-Yeah this is gonna be a hell of a drink, wonder if i can knock out a marine wit this, or atleast confine him to the lavatory for exits from front and rear. hahahaha.

*knocks off the tip of a firestorm missile and the missile fuel pours into the vat*

*shouted at the top of his lungs*HOlllleeeee ARGNU DROPPINGS

*In the outside corridor*

Marine 1: Ey man hows the wife?

Marine 2: She's going to have the kid tomorrow, I'm hoping to see her on Vid'com before then, ya know. wish her luck.

Marine 1: Wonder if The sarg is gonna call you Big-daddy now instead of Big pile of...

*Door to nearby room bursts open and Sam runs full pelt out of it, waving his arms like a madman and screaming like one too*

RUN FOR ITTTTT!!!!!!!

*Sam Speeds past the marines as a rather loud explosion goes off in the weapon room*

Marine 1: What The!?!?

Marine 2: LEG IT!!!

*The explosion reverberates through the ship, knocking out the comms and a few non-critical systems, and a few secondary explosions that do nothing more than awaken the few people left sleeping.*

About 10 minutes later, After assuring the marines that nothing bad has happened, which got him alot of dirty looks, especially from the few marines who are only wearing what they were asleep in,
Sam walks back into the room, black scorch marks everywhere but remarkably little damage, The vat is in one picece and alot of the fuel still in it*

Well. I dodged a bullet there. Kirlack would kill me if i really damaged his ship!

*Dips his finger in the vat and tastes it*

Oooooh thats Gooooooooooooodddd....
*tastes again*
Oh yeah...
*Moves the vat to one side to set and, sets up a fresh vat*
Wonder if i can do it again....

End

Hope you dont mind this, i was in stichs when i thought this up, but i think i may have lost some of the humor thru the telling :D
Oh well. i found it funny.

Orca? o_O Fair enough, but that's not what I was expecting :)

Guess? Oh no mate. I had to Google it for the translation :p

@Nathancros: I love it, but Sam's supposed to be brewing beer, not spacefuel ;) I guess he's on cleaning duties for the time being until he gets his shit straight :D And yes that means scrubbing the outside of Long Term Plans...with a toothbrush :p

Chapter 15: Brothers In Arms

New Scripts added

CODEA
Military Transports
Personnel Transport
All Plots Complete
Tubeless Complex Mod

Rules Update

Crew: Because I'm now playing with the Military Transports and Personnel Transport scripts I've decided to add a new rule regarding crew members. As of this chapter no ship can fly in combat without the appropriate crew aboard. For M1/M2/M6/M7 class ships this will require:
  • One Helmsman
  • One Navigator
  • One Machinist
  • One Scientist per turret
  • One Technician per turret
  • One Mechanic per turret
  • One Gunner per weapon slot – This is applicable for M7Ms as well, each individual missile tube must have it's own gunner.
As an example, Long Term Plans, my Ryu TL, would require a Helmsman, Navigator and Machinist, plus four Scientists, four Technicians, four Mechanics and ten Gunners.

Fighters must be either CODEA fighters, or piloted by characters suggested by the readers :D

Plots: Since I had no intention of playing the game plots anyway, I've decided to install the 'All Plots Complete' script, for a whole load of reasons.

For those of you who don't know, the script sets all TC plots as complete and drops the rewards in their specific sectors ready to be collected. The Griffon, as given for Final Fury, is immediately awarded to the player and left in M148. Everything else must be personally collected by the player.

I will not be collecting these rewards without very good reason, written into the story. And I don't intend getting any of them to be easy. (In order to collect the Vidar for instance, one of the rewards of the Terran plot, I may have to nuke half of the Mars sector defence force and then fight my way out :D )

********

Have you ever noticed how some late night revellers can be total and complete assholes? Especially to the poor guy working the night shift who's willing to give them a lift home? You know the type I mean. They're the guys that hire a taxi and then complain that the seating in the cargo bay wasn't comfortable enough, or that the climate control systems were making them hot, and try to stiff the poor pilot on the fare. Or worse yet, the ones who moan that your ride ain't classy enough for 'em?

Well, I just got me one of those. This creep by the name of Mikal Jerigan, some high flying businessman who's been out celebrating his latest big deal with his pals, tells me over the comm that he wants a ride back to Elena's Fortune. Only when I dock High Profile to pick him up, he turns up his nose at me and says:

“I'm not getting in that piece of junk. Get a passenger transport!”

Now, I know it's 3am, and I know this guy's kinda drunk and his balls are feeling big, but I'm not usually a man with whom to frak. Considering that I can run dignitaries and nobles around in my li'l Fujin Sentinel without them complaining about my choice of ship, you'd think she'd be good enough for this joker. But he's adamant and for once I just can't be bothered to argue with him, so I wait till the Traveller has landed and call it in. Bloody snob. Ushering 'Mr. Jerigan' into the 'first class' section of the passenger compartment I seal myself in the cockpit, make sure all communications are shut down and call him every name under as many suns as I can think of. Not loud enough for him to hear me of course. Wanker.

So I drop him in Elena's and get a call for a military drop up in The Wall. I got nothing better to do for a while, so I pick them up and make the jump deeper into Argon turf. My little jaunt with my crew last night has paid off and this job pushes me up to 'Federation Guardian'. That should give me access to their military transport network, so I can start hunting down some of the names on that list Sophia gave me yesterday.

First though, I need to add some factories to the refinery. Since my two agents started selling off product they've managed to shift every unit we had in stock, which tells me there's a market for more. So I jump to Profit Centre Alpha and dock up, sending Long Term over to Ceo's Sprite to pick me up an L sized flower farm. Whilst I'm waiting for that I get a message ping announcing my next marine is ready for ops. Now, whilst that brings me up to six mercs, not enough of them are going to survive trying to take a corvette or a TM, so we're going to keep waiting until we've got enough to make a run on a big target like a TL, or enough seasoned fighters to survive close quarters.

It takes my TL a good long time to reach the shipyard and pick up the flower farm and in the meantime I get message pings that my two elite engineers, Kile Keller and Almackatsalss have completed their training and will be ready to take over from Miss Cornell. She's done a bloody good job so far though, so I think she'll get first refusal on our next acquisition. Or I might make her chief engineer on Unexpected Perks. For now they'll all work together aboard Long Term whilst I sort it all out.

While I'm waiting on the new factory I call in every ship homebased to the refinery. For some reason when you connect stations together with a complex construction kit, or when you tie a new station into an existing complex, homebased ships are ordered to return home, as well as playing havoc with your carefully tailored settings.

I know. Annoying, right?

Anyway. Once my TL jumps in and drops the flower farm, directly above the refinery, I send it over to PTNI so it can pick up a second refinery. The farm should supply all the sunrise flowers for one oil plant and my CAGs can keep trading with the local farms in Scale Plate Green for the rest. It's not long before Long Term signals it's arrived and I buy the factory and a couple of complex kits before calling it back in. It takes a little careful planning, but with the advanced satellite in sector it's quite easy to set up my 'Nostroplex'. Pretty cool eh?

Since I've added more capacity for production and storage I need to organise my freighters. The two Caiman Tankers have been joined by a Demeter Tanker, a Mercury Super Freighter and his XL cousin, all of which have been set up as apprentice CAGs. For now they'll busy themselves buying energy until they're ready for bigger tasks. Despite my earlier mental note to hire some non lizard pilots, I still went ahead and made deals with three Teladi who were looking for work.

Nuts.

With that all done I turn my attention to my local traders. My lizard down in Weaver's tempest is ready for his own patch, so I lay out the credits to get one of my Vulture super freighters fixed up and equipped before setting him up. He's working out of Seizewell, all the way up to the Boron border at Ceo's Buckzoid and as far south as Blue Profit. The Caiman Miner down in Weaver's has a new Argon pilot called Tomes Jorwan.

So. Having spent a Gunne awful amount of time sorting out the administrative end of my little operation I jump back to Brennan's and switch back over to High Profile, sending the Traveller back to PCA for a refuel so I can make use of it later. With that done I zip off looking for work, and pick up a scanning gig. So I start hitting up every freighter in the sector before heading south into Danna's. There's not much freight traffic there so I scan the few I can and move on into Nopileos' Memorial, where I'm offered more scanning for a fee. Sweet! Now I can scan every ship I can see and be paid twice for my trouble.

I hit the few freighters between me and the NM east gate before crossing over into Hatikvah's Faith and looking for more targets. I decide to follow the diamond shaped flow around the sectors edge and scan those ships rather than trying to cross the sector. Halfway to the north gate I get a message ping that another marine is ready which brings me to seven. Three or four more and I'll be good to go on a TL boarding op!

As I'm passing between the eastern and southern gates I spot a Teladi war fleet centred around a Phoenix. More importantly, the destroyer is flanked by a pair of Shrikes, so I pick one out and check out his armament. I'm not ready to steal one just yet, but it doesn't hurt to have some idea what I might be up against. This one is well equipped to repel boarders though. Advanced firewall software is problematic enough for a crew like mine, under trained and inexperienced. Those internal sentry lasers though, well they'd annul the first problem by turning my mercs into sushi. Or barbecue, depending on who gets diced first. I think I'll need something a bit more shielded than Lost in Translation to strip and subdue that!

Moments after passing the lizards I get message pings from both my employers, who pay me a handsome two point seven million credits between them. I do like scanning for money. I seem to be getting quite good at it now as well. With that done though I turn and blaze my way back to Freedom's. Once I'm docked at the trading station I get another message for my latest marine, a Boron named Kuli Mo. Now, whilst I can't see her winning the Atreus Weekly 'Scary Squid of the Jazura' competition, she does bring me one step closer to my goal. I'm still going to have to wait for a few more, but I've got the perfect distraction in mind. So I call in Puddle Jumper, complete with the rest of my slaves and the poor fools I've picked up who're still in need of breaking. It's still early and if I play this right I might be able to claim slave trader and get some info from Big Mek's operation down in Acquisition Repository.

It's been a long time since I was last down in these parts but I seem to remember the pirate base being way the hell out east of the northern gate, so I turn Puddle Jumper to port and start the long haul. Whilst I'm on my way I get another ping announcing my ninth mercenary, a 'nid with a bit of experience behind him. I suspect he'll be joining the M6 boarding team. After what feels like an age I finally pick up the base on my scanners. It's not flagging hostile so I should be able to dock and trade without attracting any undue attention from the locals. Setting the ship's autopilot I grab my weapons. Just to be on the safe side.

Once I'm aboard and making my way to the slave pens I start to notice something's off. There's this subtle tension about the folks here, like they're all geared up for something but none of them quite know what. Most pirate bases are full of the scent of weed and the sound of drinking comrades after a successful raid. There was none of that here. The whole place felt...almost militarised. It wasn't until I got down to the pens I found out why. See, the slavemaster was more than happy to break my prisoners, but he point blank refused to strip their memories so I could get them trained up.

“Why not man?” I grin, waving another bundle of credits at him. “What's it gonna cost me?”

“No deal brother, “he growls, looking menacingly at me as though I'm suddenly on his breakfast menu, “we don't train 'em for nobody but the Skulls these days.” Bingo.

“Oh, hey, no worries pal. Wouldn't wanna upset the chain of command.” I say with a wink, handing him his credits. “Is there anyone round these parts that would?” He's staring at me hard, but then his eyes flick to the stack of credits in his hand.

“You might wanna try the boys down in Mi Ton's Refuge. But you didn't hear that from me”

“Understood brother. Thanks for the tip.” I say, gathering my coat and guns and making for the door. Amazing how quickly some people betray their loyalties for cash isn't it? I'm guessing this Crimson Skulls mob work through violence and intimidation. If Bailey's involved that wouldn't surprise me one little bit. Frakking evil psychotic son of a....

Sorry. Where was I? Oh, right.

So, with a long haul in front of me to reach Mi Ton's I set out for the south gate. I've got no pressing business to worry about and I don't have jump coordinates anyway so there's no point using the jumpdrive. While en route I take a look at my last few marines in training. Mayenne Cruise and Ho t'Plp are both quite promising looking fighters. With them on the M6 boarding team I should hopefully be ready to make a move on a corvette, preferably a Heavy Centaur Prototype. The one I was monitoring out of Elena's Fortune appears to have gotten itself destroyed in Split Fire, which means I'll have to locate another. In the meantime I take a look at how my Nostroplex is coming along, only to discover the machines have moved in on my trading patch again. My commercial agents won't enter the sector as long as they're about, which means my complex is only getting half of the flowers it needs for production. Something needs to be done about that before my plant shuts down from lack of resources. If the Teladi haven't cleared it up by the time I'm done making this slave run I might have to go up there myself in 'Special Delivery' and introduce the Xenon to some nuclear logic.

By now I've passed through the south gate into Spaceweed Grove, where I get offered a scanning gig. I won't be able to scan much in my TP, but it's something to keep me occupied whilst I make the trip across the sector. So I follow the flow of traffic and notice quite a few high tech goods moving between here and AR. This might be a profitable hunting ground.

Once I'm into Loomackstrat's I pull up above the gate and stop for a moment. I can see the stations off in the dark in the asteroids, but I know well enough that Big Mek's crew have laid a boatload of SQUASH mines throughout the sector. So I creep ever so slowly in towards them, scanning the occasional passing freighter, which finally pays me four hundred thousand credits. By now I'm close enough to see that the local laser towers are blue, but most of the stations are flagging hostile. That's not surprising, Mek's always been cautious, but I am kinda shocked that his anarchy port is blue. Did I get that hacked at some point and forget about it?

Hmm. Opportunity....or trap?

I pull up just within comms range of the station and cut engines. I've enough jump fuel to get out in a hurry if needs be, and enough drones to provide me with some cover whilst I make the jump...hopefully. With my finger over the jump button I make a call to the station, and find a Boron called Popo Gi who's willing to hack one of the other stations for me. Deciding to play the opportunity I get him to set me with access to the rehab facility. There's no move on me as I dock but the slavemaster here tells me the same thing as the guy in Acquisition. If you're not with the Skulls we ain't training your troops. Alrighty.

As soon as I undock from the rehab facility I get a missile lock warning. Shit! I knew I shouldn't have trusted that frakking Boron! Bringing the ship about to go east and into clear space I set my hostile lock on the missile. A Banshee. Powerful, but slow. I can't outrun it with the main engines alone, but I can using the strafe thrusters! Turning myself away from the missile I engage the thrusters and start putting some distance between us. When It's finally at about the twelve kilometre mark it burns out and self destructs, and I breathe a huge sigh of relief. As I bring the ship about to line up on the south gate it occurs to me what just happened. The local orbital weapons platform is still flagging hostile to me. It must have missed me when I docked at the station, but picked me up on it's sensor sweep as I was leaving. OWPs are typically stocked to the gills with Banshee missiles and I didn't notice any other ships near enough to launch at me. I think it was just attacking because I was in it's threat range. If that's the case my cover should still be good. So, taking special care to stay as far away from it as possible on my way I carry on to the south gate.

The rehab facility in Mi Ton's is much more accommodating and happily zaps some sense into some of my slaves, leaving me with a few worthy soldiers in waiting and a couple of potential engineers. When I head back home I'll get them in training ready for operations. The guys on this base couldn't give a rats ass about the Crimson Skulls, but they are willing to sign to this 'pirate guild' I keep hearing about. They're also in need of a station being built which I gladly offer to do for them. For that kind of money I'd be mad not to. So I send Long Term up to PTNI to fetch me one and drop it for them up near the north gate, making myself around two point three million credits, and tipping my reputation amongst the clans back to positive. With a little luck that'll keep any raiders up in PTNI from hitting my freighters, or worse, my complex.

With my TL in sector I decide to switch back to it and send Puddle Jumper home to start training my new batch of mercs. Several more have completed their training, bringing me up to eleven, including Mayenne Cruise who really does read as a bad ass fighter. I think once Huritas and the boys are up and ready to go we're going to start looking for some boarding targets. In the meantime I make the long trek in my TL, down through Moo Kye's Revenge and into Desecrated Skies. Knowing there's Paranid territory both north and south of here I move us up high above the sector and bring the ship to a stop. It's still early and I want to leave my crew for a couple more hours, so for now I decide to check in on the Xenon situation up in Scale Plate.

Oh good, the lizards have sent in a Shrike wing. That ought to wipe that Q right out.

Or maybe not... Still, at least the Peregrines should be able to...

Oh for crying out loud!

Right. Only one thing for it. Where the Teladi Company's best and brightest have failed miserably with their mighty warship, I shall succeed with my humble bomber. Special Delivery is all kitted out and hopefully I've enough nukes for the job, so I jump it in to meet me and then beam across for the trip to SPG. Of course, by the time I get there the Argon military have shown up and promptly bombard the Q resulting in an eye blistering halo of nuclear fire! I didn't have to fire a single shot. Ace!

Actually, the involvement of the Argon military reminds me, I've got to find working crew for my three capital ships. Since I'd planned on waiting for my pilots to get their asses out of their bunks before looking for operational targets now seems as good a time as any to start searching. But that means heading into a lot of core sectors with a TP. Tidal Traveller is still tied to the complex and I don't want to connect it with anything shady if I can help it. Puddle Jumper still has some slaves aboard, but I decide to shift them into the cargo bay of Unexpected Perks, where my marines can keep both an eye and a gun on them. Then I jump the Express to me, switch to it and send my bomber home before checking the Argon military transport network*. Light of Heart has the closest incoming group, so I make the jump and wait it out.

When it arrives I take damn near every man woman and lizard available, including a couple of marines who're hiding amongst the flight crews. When I get them singled out and into the operations room so the bioscanner can read them, I get a a nice surprise. Both Almanckostat and Selaia Bro are reasonable fighters. I'll have to keep an eye out for more marines whilst I pick up some more crew members.

It takes a good long while, jumping all over Argon territory finding enough of the right people, and I eventually find myself in Black Hole Sun with more people than I have energy cells. In the past hour or so I've been to Antigone Memorial, Home of Light, Ore Belt, Legend's Home, Three Worlds, Omicron Lyrae, Cloud Base South East and here, and found a whole bunch of Gunners, Mechanics, Technicians, Scientists and even several Helmsmen, Navigators and the fabled Machinists. It's not quite enough to cover all my ships, but it's a damned good start. Since I'm low on jump fuel I use my last to reach Elysium of Light, home of the Goners.

As soon as I see it sitting there the thought is already in my mind. It's so clear to me I think I may have been subconsciously planning this all along. The Goner Ozias. Now, on paper you might not think there's anything special about the Ozias, but it's the only TL class ship with capacity for TS and TP docking. Which, at the moment, makes it invaluable to me. I have a whole load of freighters that need to be repaired. If I set Sendy Cornell and her team working on an Ozias full of freighters, how long would it take her to get them all fixed up?

I think we have our first boarding target.

First though I want to set the crew I've already hired with their respective ships. A quick pit stop at the local SPP and I bounce back to Senator's to meet up with Long Term, transferring across all the crew members she'll need, then stopping at the military outpost to fill most of Unexpected Perks crew slots. She still needs a couple of gunners, a scientist and a mechanic, so I'm back off to Antigone Memorial to await the next load. When I get there I'm offered a very lucrative deal for a passenger transport which I agree to. It's a little bit tight making it to their destination after waiting for the military transport to show up at the equipment dock, but we make it with a few seconds to spare. I picked up another marine hiding amongst the flight crews, a lizard called Yahondras Yahandis Yahinussos the fourth and I reckon this one's tough enough to give Huritas a run for her money! I'll be getting him in training as soon as we make the next jump home. In the meantime there's a group here wanting to head to Antigone so I take them on board and make the jump.

Back in Antigone I get an offer for a used....Hermes? Okay, I'll take it, but really? A Hermes, up here in Argon space? I should ask for a discount. So I send that off to the equipment dock and get a very high profile taxi job for another businessman, only this one wasn't snobby at all. He was actually quite grateful that I got him to his meeting on time and said he'd use my services again. Hah! Maybe next time you'll be travelling with the slaves mate.

Since I'm in Three Worlds and there's a military transport due I wait it out and pick up the last few personnel I need to fit out my ships, plus a few spares for my next acquisition. With that done I hop back to Senator's and make a quick stop at the outpost to fill out Perks last few slots. As I'm transferring people about I spot another marine amongst my flight crews, a guy name of Pok Fisty. Oh boy. I think we just found our lead man on boarding ops. This guy's tougher than most of my Paranid marines!

With my new marines in training and all the crew assignments finalized for my three capital ships, it's time we visited the Goners and enquired as to the status of that ship. I've bought Long Term Plans as it allows my guys to mop up any trouble that might arise while we brazenly steal the Goners prize TL. I've also had 'Lost in Translation', my Eclipse which I intend to strip and subdue the TL with, brought along from Senator's Badlands, kitted out with every Ion Disruptor I own. Only five, but it's enough for the job. I hope. The rest of her weapon slots have been filled out with PBGs to give me a wide area hitting weapon for bringing the shields down to a manageable level, then I can get to work with the Ions. I'm also packing four PACs and four IREs in case I nee to fine tune the shield level whilst the boys are en route in the pods.

First job though, get a scan of their defences. Oh dear. She's carrying a squad of marines. Looks like I'll have to short out the cargo bay life support system, along with those internal sentry lasers. I'm not about to make the play for this ship with the Argon security forces still hanging around the sector though, so I launch a silkworm missile at each of the Busters and close on the Centaur. Under PBG fire his six hundred megajoules of shielding doesn't last very long, and then it's just me and the Goners.

I set up position a couple hundred metres from the Ozias and let rip with my PBGs, dropping his shields like a stone. Even one point six gigajoules doesn't last long under that kind of firepower. Suddenly his shields are down in the single digits, and I switch to Ions and start frying the ship systems. A few minutes later....

Well now, that takes care of the marine squad they had on board! I pull away and switch my weapons load out to PACs for fine tuning the shields and put the call in to Unexpected Perks. It's high time my fourteen strong boarding crew earned their keep.

With the shields down and my boarding platform in place I give the order, and pull around the other side of the ship so I'm not in the way of the boarding pods. A few seconds later and they're attached and making their way through. I get the message that they're hacking the core and suddenly....

Oh yeah! We just stole the Goner Ozias!

I call Perks over to collect the boarding crew before sending them back home and beaming Mr Keller and the engineering team across to the Ozias. Whilst they're bringing the ship systems back online I sort them out a jumpdrive from Long Term Plans and enough jump fuel to get home before sending my new ship on it's way. Once they've got the thing patched up and refitted Miss Cornell is going to to take up residency as my chief engineer, and she's going to be kept busy for the next little while getting all my freighters fixed up and ready for duty. She's keeping her team, I'll look into hiring a few new engineers to work with Mr Keller and the 'nid.

So, with our first successful boarding op complete it's time I turned my attention elsewhere. My Nostroplex is running right down on stock again, despite having added a production layer, so I think it's time for some more expansion. With this in mind I dock Lost in Translation at my Ryu and make the jump clear across to Profit Centre Alpha. A quick switch to Indie Cypher and my Ryu is on its way to Ceo's Sprite to collect me another flower farm. It takes a little while but that gives me time to oversee the progress on our new Ozias, the 'Chop Shop'. All my former storage freighters have been assigned docking positions so they can be stripped of their cargo and repaired for other duties. Miss Cornell informs me that her engineering team have gotten the ships hull integrity up to full and are ready to start repairs on my many trade fleet. Since I can't buy TS class ships from anywhere I'm going to get every one of my freighters fixed up and ready for use as either a local trader or a commercial agent for my factory. It'll cost me a small fortune in jumpdrives and equipment, but it saves me worrying about stealing more freighters for a while.

With the addition of more production capacity to my Nostroplex I've had to assign a few more freighters to pick up the slack, so I've set a Caiman Super Freighter, Demeter Tanker and Demeter Super Freighter up to work as CAGs. I've even had the foresight to hire a trio of Argon pilots to act as apprentices. No more long winded Teladi names! Also Tomes Jorwan, my sector trader down in Weaver's Tempest is now ready for his own patch, so I assign him to one of my Caiman Super Freighter XLs and ship him up to Spaceweed Drift. With a slot open for trading in Weaver's I hire another Argon, a guy named Kriss Keswen to take over.

With nothing else to do for now except wait on my freighters to be repaired and equipped I jump Long Term to the pirate sector east of PTNI and take up position a hundred or so kilometres south of the gate. It takes a couple of hours for Miss Cornell and her team to get all my ships fixed up, but with them done I'm free to pursue something a little more fun. A quick jump down to Freedom's Reach and I make my way to the trading station with my fighter pilots in tow.

This evening we're going hunting.

It's made boardable by the 'All Plots Complete' script, which was one of several reasons I wanted to install it.
