I missed this earlier.drakend wrote:Egosoft gave Steam the patch data as soon as they released it to the general public. The fact Egosoft had to contact Steam to make them hurry shows that the slowness of Steam is a fact and not the whining of some people with no life, like some Steam fanboys make it appear.
This is utterly pathetic for an online content provider where the most important fact is FAST AVAIABILITY of content.
BurnIt!'s message gave no hint that he had needed to push them to release. That's an assumption that you made. Read it again.

Damn, patch is out now. Hopefully the 1.4 patch isn't too far off so I can finish that game of Half Life 2 I started while waiting for the patch to arrive.
Steam has made my Half Life 2 game less fun!!!!!

I lost plenty, playing Half Life 2 for the third time. Now thanks to Valve all that time is wasted as I'll be going back to X3 and won't get to finish my game.fud wrote:At least, I didn't lose any sleep over it.

A rule of thumb about Steam if anyone is still having trouble with the patch: try restarting Steam completely, the program gets sort of confused easily but restarting it almost always refreshes everything.
If you're STILL having trouble then try deleting (back it up too) the file 'clientregistry.blob' in the Steam folder. This will remove a couple of custom settings like server favorites but it's almost the equivalent of reinstalling Steam. This doesn't affect any games. This has helped me dozens of times, but do it at your own risk, blah blah...

Assumeing such a thing happens, when 1.4 is out we get to go through this all over again. Yippy.....

So the question is... do the steam users demand a simultaneous release next time?
It's not as obvious a question as you might think... if they;d done a simultaneous release this time round, we still would have got the patch today. The difference being, the DVD users would have had to wait until today instead of getting it on Thursday.
I'd like to hope I wasn't bitter enough to stop someone else having fun just coz I had to wait a bit longer... opinions?

Yes, there would be good reasons to synchronise a patch for a multiplayer game. Which means that if TC were multiplayer, we would all be getting the patch about... now.dminor wrote:For a Multiplayer game I would have been up in arms. As this is a single player game I've got no problems with the way it worked.

Here's MY OPINION of what COULD have happened with this patch release. Might be a suggestion for the next release. For the record, I'm a Steam user.
The patch was released on a thursday evening ish as I understand it. What Egosoft could have done is released the patch to some trustworthy people, such as the forum moderators and hard core scripters and modders. They could have played the game Friday and over the weekend, looking for anything devestating to the game and ensuring their scripts and mods still worked. This would be on the condition they don't reveal anything that suggests they have the patch (i.e. releasing a script stating that say it's been updated for the patch).
All going well with no breaking faults found by the people playing, the patch would be released to download from the website and submitted to Valve Monday. That would reduce the amount of complaints about Steam users not having the patch for the weekend when DVD users can get it. It also would probably ensure that the patch is available to all users before the following weekend. This is assuming that most peoples majority playtime is on the weekend. It also means that on the release of the patch, some of the bigger scripts and mods would have been checked already, and possibly updated before the patch was available for general use. Additionally, if there was some major issue that got missed during the Egosoft testing that breaks the game, the patch can be delayed without causing further uproar. People will just assume that they are still waiting for the patch.
Of course, given the lead time that Steam users had to wait (3-4 business days), then Steam users would have actually had to wait an extra day for the patch, and DVD users would also have have the patch delayed to them for 3 days, but who'd know other than the moderators and scripters who got it early. After release, hopefully the delay would be justified by many users as there will be less having to wait another couple of days for their favorite big script or mod to be updated after patching day.
Just a thought I had. Discuss or discard as you see fit.
Edited twice to fix typos, missing words, just poor sentance structure and the like

Well a week ago (the day the patch was released to the public) an Egosoft employee stated that they handed over the patch data to Steam and now BurnIt says they're in contact with Steam so the release of the patch wouldn't be too far off.eladan wrote:I missed this earlier.

If you make 1+1 then the reason Egosoft had "to stay in contact" with Steam is quite clear. Of course an Egosoft employee can't say much more because there are financial contracts among the two companies, but we aren't dumb so it's easy to guess the reason of this contact.

As usual Egosoft support service is very good: I'm not happy about some things Egosoft does, but their customer care is careful about client's needs even after the purchase of the product, as usual. I cannot say the same for Steam and I bet this pathetic show will repeat for the future patches as well.

The service you like sucks and people is whining about that rightfully. If you have problems in reading your beloved Steam criticized it's your problem.Arcturas wrote:I'm the fanboy when I didn't buy X3:TC from steam ? Because I stand up for a service I like? I was a valve fan long before steam.
Oh decide yourself dude: first you say Steam is wonderful and you're in love with it, then you say that buying the dvd is the smart route. This way you also imply that Steam customers are dumb: well before telling about others' dumbness I would make sure I make coherent posts...I went the smart route and bought X3:TC on dvd so I get the patches when they're out.

Furthermore, the delay probably has something to do with their content distribution server(s). Anyway, don't try to label me as a fan boy when you're the one that's jonesing and cranky because you can't play a video game.
If you are willing to be treated as a carpet by Steam because you love it so much then be my guest, but many other people doesn't like that and they care about their money, above all.

BurnIt only said they were in contact, not that it was required to make a special contact just recently.drakend wrote:Well a week ago (the day the patch was released to the public) an Egosoft employee stated that they handed over the patch data to Steam and now BurnIt says they're in contact with Steam so the release of the patch wouldn't be too far off.eladan wrote:I missed this earlier.

Did you read what I wrote dude? Did I deny he said that? I only said that post was a proof Egosoft had to tell Steam to hurry in releasing the patch in my humble opinion. If it is true or it isn't it's known only to Steam and Egosoft of course... but isn't this obvious? Do I have to write such an obvious thing?strude wrote:BurnIt only said they were in contact, not that it was required to make a special contact just recently.

You are wrong there. All Egosoft CAN do is ask Steam how far they progressed in implementing. Egosoft is way too small a company to have any leverage on Steam. So what we are potentially getting out of this Egosoft enquiry is that they can tell us Steam are working on it and a potential deadline. Steam are still going to stick to their update schedule. There is no way a company of that size would screw up a routine and cause huge inconvenience to their staff just before Christmas, only to accommodate a small company.
