Thanks for the replies though, helps me make my decision AND save money!!!
the modding system in X games works by allowing files in the newer packages to overright existing ones. So big mods, like XTM can override the existing files without actually need to replace the file.

in most cases, the only files you will ever find being actually replaces is when changes are made to the existing scripts. These such changes are however very rare and i only know of a few scripts that actually do that, so i wouldn't worry.

but afaik, you can just turn off steam file verifying anyways so you can replace any files you wish

Just as a note while I await my X3:TC download off Steam, I'd never used Steam before, but downloaded the 21 day free trial of Eve. After that worked out well, I have no qualms at all about Steam, and as I live in the US (it's only unfortunate because of the guy in charge at the moment...that'll change soon enough though!) it's the only reasonable way for me to get the game. Anywho, long story short, I like Steam, I can't wait for X3:TC, my wife hates all you Egosoft people and is preparing to be an X3-widow again, and Eve was overrated and not nearly as fun as the X-series.
so there.

and yeah, steamed Boron sounds good...but what about beer-battered boron? mmmmm

Thinking about that maybe the Steam users on the forums should add each other to their friends lists!
Good idea! Someone should make a semi-official X3 group.

Ok folks, I hope this is the right place for this question. Earlier in this thread we were discussing about some differences between British English and American English, blah blah (which I am not concerned about). My question is about the formatting. If I order the English version off of either the Ego shop, eBay, Amazon.com, etc., will it matter that it is PAL encoded? I am no expert on that stuff but it is my understanding that the UK (and most of Europe) uses PAL and the US and Canada uses NTSC. Is this just a concern with DVDs and console games or will I have problems with this? Thanks.

P.S. I would have no problem with digital distrubution if I could just pay for and download an ISO image and then burn it. But I refuse to download and install a third party program that I have run to play a game.

PAL and NTSC are tv formats, so they dont really effect PC's at all.

im not sure about the US, but alot of EU tv's are compatable with both anyways

I thought it was "Steamed Teladi" as the pirate would scream before he exploded.

Back to Topic: I did the pre-load last night, and happy with it. At work, I have no connection to Steam, and it auto-switch to offline mode. I was a Steam-Thomas earlier, but now I am happy.

As you said, PAL and NTSC don't matter for computer games - they only affect DVDs and console games.

Most US TVs don't support PAL, but I would imagine a lot of projectors do.

First it was anti-Boron slurs, and now the assumption that all Teladi are pirates! You better watch out, or the XCLU* will be after you guys...

In case there was any confusion, I was referring to the probability that the Boron would like Steam, since it's environmentally friendly. I hadn't considered the fish connection, because I view Boron as humanoids, not food as some of you Argon hillbillies do.

Cycrow,

Thanks. Main reason I ask is because I have a monitor that is connected via HDMI cable to the PC and I remember reading something about Euro DVDs wouldn't play on American monitors, etc. Why can't we all just get along?!!!

Thank you Mr. Cycrow! That is exactly what I needed to hear. I usually play a game through and then experiment with scripts/mods and such.

I will get the steam version of this soon to be awesome game!!![/quote]

While this was generally true of CRT TVs, nearly all LCD/DLP/Plasma TVs in the USA seem to support both NTSC and PAL. And why not, since it costs almost nothing to support both with those picture technologies.

I am also a big fan of Steam, have had zero issues and I love being able to head over to a family member's and play all my games on a PC that's not mine. You can even put files onto discs and transfer them over to dodge the re-download time(although you have to be careful with your paste placement). I would go back and forth between my parent's houses with nothing but a flash drive for my save file and I had zero issues.

In other news, I'm seeing that ppl have in fact started their pre-load on Steam. I pre-purchased a while back but its still sitting there in the Not Installed list, saying "Not Yet released" Any ideas on how to jumpstart that? Not getting any options on the right click.

EDIT: Nvm I'm a big fat idiot. Soon as I typed this I thought "Oh maybe I should just restart Steam" That worked. Durrrr

I think I've used Steam on probably 5 different PCs over the years, zero problems, I just copy the bulk of the data from one install to another over ethernet, Steam picks that up just fine.

As with most Steam games, it is part of the download. Those who have finished pre-loading are already reading theirs.
I've been flipping through the manual between studying breaks over here. I'm about to explode with excitement. I think you guys have really outdone yourselves this time. 8)

for Steam users, mine says "Pre-load starting" - will this complete the load on it's own (in other words, do I just need to be patient?) or do I need to do something else? :)

Yeah, I just want to drool over the manual before friday!

I took the plunge and ordered a tangible copy from Egosoft.

I had been concerned about using my credit card overseas, since last time someone went on quite a shopping spree, causing me a great headache. *** To my delight, their shop process via Paypal!

Now I leave town for 10 days. Hopefully it will be here when I get back. :)

*** NOT an Egosoft transaction. Please don't assume I'm pointing fingers at them.
