I've been playing X4 since release, and the 9.0 shield changes made me realize something fundamental: X4's combat system doesn't follow its own sci-fi setting.
In any sci-fi universe with energy shields — Star Wars, Star Trek, Halo, Homeworld — capital ships dominate because larger reactors mean more shield generators, stronger shields, and bigger weapons. Smaller ships simply cannot break through a capital's shields with sustained fire. That's the entire point of having shield technology.
X4 has shields in its lore, but the 9.0 "shield regeneration interruption on hit" mechanic effectively negates them entirely. If shields stop recharging the moment they take fire, they're just extra HP bars, not energy shields. This turns combat into WWII naval logic — small, maneuverable ships swarming and wearing down larger ones — which only makes sense in a setting without shields.
The result is backwards: M-class corvettes are now the real capital ships, while L/XL ships are fragile escorts. A handful of M-class ships can grind down a Xenon I because its shields never recharge under sustained fire. This contradicts everything the setting implies about capital ship warfare.
I understand wanting to make smaller ships relevant, but there are better solutions that don't break the setting:
Make capital ships prohibitively expensive and slow to build (they already are)
Give capital ships blind spots or weak points (surface elements already exist for this)
Make torpedoes actually track and be effective against capitals
Add rare, expensive shield-piercing weapons instead of negating shields for everyone
Negating the entire shield mechanic is the laziest possible balance solution. It makes capital ships feel like overgrown corvettes instead of the fleet centers they should be.
Please reconsider the shield regen interruption mechanic, or at least scale it by ship size so capital shields can still hold against smaller-caliber fire. The setting deserves combat logic that actually matches it.
Shield mechanics contradict the sci-fi setting — capital ships should dominate with shields

Yup, capital ships regenerating their shields -- especially monsters like I-class -- brought a lot of depth to the battle.
Of course, I would propose shield pierce depending on shield strength, but that's just me.

That's function of shields in pretty much all space games. It is an extra HP bar which eventually regenerates. Mechanically that allows you to make a mistake, retreat, regenerate, return.a_meng wrote: Sun, 30. Aug 26, 12:15 If shields stop recharging the moment they take fire, they're just extra HP bars,
Originally capitals in x4 did not have regeneration delay, and that allowed you to soak damage on some ships like asgard without thinking much of it. Which wasn't that interesting.
However your point about L/XL being fragile escort doesn't hold, because they have bigger shields, more hull and deadlier turrets. So that "handful of M ships" might as well be obliterated, worst case scenario before they get close enough to capital to hit i. Also, "smaller ship swarm vs large ship" was always a thing in X games as far as I know.
I also recommend to check out Elite Dangerous where your shield can take five minutes to regenerate fully, and if it is ever broken there will be several minutes long delay before it even begins to recharge. So it is an extra HP bar.

It was and it was separating X4 from many games with shield mechanics. Acshually, I can't remember a game where capital ships did have shields and these shields regenerated under fire.vvvvvvvv wrote: Sun, 30. And it's not a good mechanic. You either keep sucking on shield packets and heat sinks, have to exit combat for a long time, or disengage completely. Neither is a ton of fun. Combined with HUD that doesn't display your shield next to your reticle (meaning you don't immediately see when your shield is low) it's even less fun.vvvvvvvv wrote: Sun, 30. As for me, I'd prefer shields regenerating on every ship constantly, but with bleed through mechanic. With corresponding changes to hulls. ATM the tactic is shield tanking. Hull tanking is off the board from the start. And if we remember, say, Descent Free Space series, that was mostly the case for capitals there -- and it worked excellently!

I do not see this feature as important to the series. As far as I know, the defining trait of the series was simulation scale + lore and not shield mechanics.
Though for some time X had an "amazing" idea of shields and boost using the same gauge, which did set it apart from everything else, but not in a good way.

It may not have been a defining feature, but it surely did set it apart from most. And when you finally hav a destroya! and, after rather easily defeating some Xenon K's and maybe some H, engage with Xenon I, seeing its shields regen after hits and realizing you alone are not even close enough to take this heavy cruiser -- that is an eye opening experience.vvvvvvvv wrote: Thu, 3. Also, X4 lore? Seriously now? Timelines do hint at its existence a few times -- but that's all she wrote. Some random pieces of fan fiction you encounter in the game do not qualify.
X4 scale is also quite meager, compared to other living worlds.
So these two clearly do not set X4 apart. It's a fun little game with interesting space combat mechanics and basic attempt at economy. Nowadays, one of these mechanics was removed. And I do not like that.
It's good I have discovered it after that. Does not sound like fun. As for the boost itself, vanilla X4 boost is, itself, rather absurd. Only 'Immersive boosters' mod makes it more or less believable.vvvvvvvv wrote: Thu, 3.
