Feature request: Flight Assist Off setting
I'd like there to be a setting for flight assist off by default. When exiting travel mode, getting on a ship, undocking, flight assist always reverts to on, and I'd have to toggle it off every time. Having a setting which keeps flight assist off after exiting travel mode, undocking, or getting on a ship would really help.

Re: Feature request: Flight Assist Off setting
I suggest add option to game settings to switch function of Flight Assist hotkey. Flight Assist wil be turned off by default and temporary turned on by pressing hotkey.

So, noone interested more realistic play style? To fight like fighters of "Battlestar Galactica" or "Expance", not like WWII atmospheric planes... Sad

If you use mods, my REM Overhaul restores "classic" space physics. F.a.on is not glue drifting but movement in vacuum where only thrusters can stop inertia, f.a.off allows higher speeds when boosting and keep momentum at higher speeds. But it does many more things.

I have 5.603 hours and to this day I don't know the key combination for Flight Assist Off.
This proposed feature is definitely not for me.

I rarely use it, it can be handy to re-orientate during travel drive though. Ctrl + Space by default. Flight Assist itself doesn' t work as well as it used to before the flight model update in terms of nullifying drift so there is somewhat less difference between it being on or off (not no difference of course, thrusting vector remains unlocked with assist off!) in terms of overall controllability.

Re: Feature request: Flight Assist Off setting
The closest I've come to using fight assist off was exiting travel mode with Shift + 1, rather than tapping back-space. That used to allow for some epic drift, while being able to turn fast. That got removed with the flight model update though. It does remain quite irksome that the ability to turn (to face a vector, not travel along it) is restricted by speed and not thrust. Sure, if in travel mode, limitations apply, however, if still moving quite fast after disengaging travel engines, restricted turning seems odd.

Thank you for the key combo.Blaze1st wrote: ↑Sat, 10. Jan 26, 13:39I rarely use it, it can be handy to re-orientate during travel drive though. Ctrl + Space by default. Yeah, that is why I would not be on board with this feature..."you know that thing that you don't use? let's make it the default, wouldn't that be fun? Hmm, let me think...NOOOOO".
I'm already struggling with the left right giggling to get the nose of my carrier (Shark or Raptor) to align with the gate...
Edit: Now I see the request is for a setting. Well, having this as something to be set up, and not Flight Assist Off by default for all, as I interpreted it, would not be too bad I suppose.

Honestly, if I turn off Flihgt Assist, it shouldn't be automatically turned on! Let me turn it of completely!

Try split ships with split engines. They are not like atmospheric planes.S!rAssassin wrote: ↑Tue, 6. Jan 26, 08:41 So, noone interested more realistic play style? To fight like fighters of "Battlestar Galactica" or "Expance", not like WWII atmospheric planes... Sad![]()

Basically there's a key to toggle it quickly, and FA off does not work with travel mode. That's (probably) why there's not much interest. Ships with more sliding also produce middle ground between FA On and Fa Off.

Re: Feature request: Flight Assist Off setting
You can use FA off in travel mode... I've just done it a few minutes ago while exploring sectors in a new playthrough. What you can't do is apply a new thrust vector until FA comes back on (because travel drive is a binary on/off and forward only), only reorientation then when you re-enable FA the travel thrust will kick in for the new direction.

Re: Feature request: Flight Assist Off setting
Yes. With the earlier flight model you could travel to one direction, turn off FA, turn the ship rather quickly, turn the FA on, and the ship would accelerate very quickly (seemed faster than normal travel acceleration) to the new vector. With that flight model turning (FA on) during travel was very slow.
There is shortcut key and I have bound it to button on my joystick too.
The OP is more on the other actions that toggle the FA (as side-effect)?

Re: Feature request: Flight Assist Off setting
Yes the turning is a lot slower the faster the engine in the new flight model during travel which is something I dislike since there is no friction or air resistance in space a ship should always turn at a fixed speed based on thruster strength and mass imo (f=ma).
As an aside I also think thrusters are too weak in general under the new flight model.
