Subject: X4: Foundations Linux Launch Issue – Ubuntu 24.04
System Information:
OS: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Steam Version: 1:1.0.0.83 i386
CPU: 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-12500 × 12
RAM: 32 GB
GPU: Intel UHD 770 (iGPU), Intel Arc A750 (dGPU)
Issue:
X4: Foundations fails to launch on native Linux Steam client. Logs show repeated failures to load vgui_s.so and i386 library warnings.
Steps Taken:
Verified integrity of installed files; reinstalled game multiple times.
Updated all packages including i386 libraries (libc6:i386, libstdc++6:i386, libgl1-mesa-dri:i386).
Tested launch under Proton GE 10-10 and 9.0-4, despite game being Linux-native.
Collected full logs (steam-392160.log) showing:
err:xrandr:xrandr14_get_adapters Failed to get adapters
could not load module 'vgui_s.so'
Fossilize shader cache overrides (/steamapps/shadercache/392160/...)
Thread and audio mixer warnings
Verified that Steam client is i386 but Proton runs 64-bit game; logged architecture mismatches.
Confirmed GPU detection warnings and adapter enumeration issues.
Request:
Help identify missing dependencies or configuration needed for Linux-native launch.
Attachment:
steam-392160.log (PM for logs)

I'm not entirely sure I can follow the whole thing here, but a quick non-AI-assisted search for the vgui_s.so error you're experiencing brought up this which suggests that reinstalling lbsndio7.0 may help.

Thank you for your response. I also edited the post for clarity, I was exhausted when I initially posted it lol. I installed the libsndio -dev packages and unfortunately the game still crashes to desktop after the splash screen.

Searching for the xrandr14_get_adapters errors also gives quite a few hits, especially from people having problems running games under Steam generally. You might want to have a look through a few of those, though none of the ones I looked at seemed to have resolutions.
I would also look again at your Intel graphics drivers, as Linux+Intel is a pretty rare combination and we've seen a number of reports of issues with it. The fact that it's having adapter enumeration issues would tend to confirm this, and implies that Vulkan is not able to find your graphics devices. If you have related options when (re)installing graphics drivers, make sure you include Vulkan support.

After extensive additional troubleshooting it does appear to be a Linux + Intel GPU issue. I've taken all steps to enable Vulkan support, force use of Vulkan etc. but I've never gotten the game to launch. It either freezes on the load screen or crashes to desktop. This is not the only game I've had issues with. I suppose this might be an excuse to invest in a new AMD or NVIDIA cardCBJ wrote: ↑Thu, 14. edit: I chose an intel GPU for Plex transcoding but It's becoming increasingly clear I may need separate machines for plex/services/hosting vs gaming which is probably a duh but this was my first forray into building my own rig so I forgive myself.
