Hi,

I would update your sound card drivers as they are dated 2009!

Apart from the sound driver, nothing else springs out from the DxDiag other than that you could usefully employ some more RAM with that OS x64.

What about the questions in the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs from my last post?

Are you using vendor-supplied or generic default drivers/control panel for that Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD? Is it connected with SATA 3 (6 Gb/s)?

So, I bought Albion Prelude when it first came out. Only played it twenty hours or so, but I don't recall having any problems with it. I downloaded and installed the Bonus Package for it too. Just lost interest.

But when I opened it up for the first time in over a year the other day, it wouldn't save. The only mod I could find from before was STO (SectorTakeOver). I removed that, so I don't see how it could be causing a problem.

Vendor supplied. Not sure if the connector is SATA 3, but I don't really see how that applies. It is whatever SATA cable came with the hard drive.

OK, the reason for asking is that I wanted to see what had changed since the issue was last not there. Given it is a year and you have changed mods and the game has updated alongside any system and hardware changes you have made, it is probably just about everything! Did you have the same HDDs back then for example?

I asked about the SATA 3 because using the supplied cable does not necessarily mean it is plugged into a 6 Gb/s SATA 3 socket on the mobo. You have a rare 'cannot save' issue that does not respond to the usual remedies, which not unreasonably might lead me to question why the HDD may not be performing as expected. You have assured me that it is not the game installations that are at fault and so it has to be something on your system, whether hardware, software or set-up.

Have you tried renaming a x99.sav from a fresh gamestart to see if that loads as I asked? However, if the x99 comes only from trying your year-old modded saves then you needn't bother further as they are irrelevant today.

Hey, something worked! I renamed the X99.sav file from a new game to X01.sav and it loaded! Still can't save regularly, however. Also, I can't edit the savegame name while X3:AP is running. It just reverts. But at least this is a start!

.. and about the rest of my last post? I am working pretty much in the dark here about what system and set-up changes you have made since it last worked.

"Also, I can't edit the savegame name while X3:AP is running. It just reverts." That should not happen if you rename x99.sav to x01-x10.sav (manual saves) while the game runs/pauses in background after an Alt/Tab out and then your next save attempt x99.sav is renamed to a different manual save slot. It almost certainly will happen if you rename it to x11-x13.sav which are the autosaves that will/should get shuffled upwards and renamed via x99.sav when you next dock.

One idea that occurred to me even though it doesn't make a lot of sense on the face of it, but just humour me on this one. Do this and try again.

So, when I first bought X3:AP, I had the old 300GB hard drive that you can see there. Later, I bought the 2TB drive and flashed all the contents of the old one onto the new. Haven't had a problem with any other applications after the flash, though. That's the only hardware change I've made. Oh, and those sound drivers are as up-to-date as they can be.
Alan Phipps wrote:"Also, I can't edit the savegame name while X3:AP is running. It just reverts." That should not happen if you rename x99.sav to x01-x10.sav (manual saves) while the game runs/pauses in background after an Alt/Tab out and then your next save attempt x99.sav is renamed to a different manual save slot.
Well, what "should" happen didn't. I tried renaming X99.sav to X02.sav with X3:AP running. No bueno. Didn't show up on the load screen and reverted back to X99.sav next time I checked.

I'll try it.

There are R2.70 generic June 2012 RealTek Win7 x64 HD Audio codecs/drivers on the RealTek site from here. The ones you have now predate issue of Win7 let alone SP1. Your mobo manufacturer has obviously stopped supporting it with updates if you have nothing newer than 2009 being offered.

I am unsure how a paused game could deliberately reverse a manual file rename - unless you mean the manual rename action fails while the gamesave folder is tagged in-use rather than that the game somehow renames the file again. I could understand that rename failure happening if that is the case.

Remind me, what gamestart(s) are you using? (Not the DiD one I hope!).

We know that the HDD and game can save the gamesave (the x99 one proves it). What thay are failing to do is rename them after that - just like you found with the manual rename. We need to work out what is stopping that rename function from working in the game whether manual or game-initiated. It sounds like a permissions or folder-in-use issue. Could you post the full path of your save folder please? (Example: C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Egosoft\X3AP\save)

I do not mean that. I mean what I said. Rename worked in the folder. Upon return to the game and attempt to load, nothing appeared. Next I go back to the folder and the save reverted to X99.sav.

OK that is a bit more help. The game can create a save that will work if renamed (from x99) and can rename or delete existing save files (renamed sav back to x99 or deleted and replaced by new x99 sav). The big question then is why it doesn't keep doing it normally and create the necessary save hierarchy in game. As to answering that one, and if the game installations for both TC and AP are known to be correct and updated and the issues in this FAQ eliminated, then we have to look again at either the OS or hardware.

Please do the following: navigate to the MSDOS Command Prompt icon and right click on it and select 'Run as Admin'. Now type 'sfc /scannow'. See what that says after it checks and if necessary repairs your OS files.

If that is OK, then please do the same again to run the Command Prompt but this time type 'chkdsk' and see what that says as it checks your HDD. If it finds errors then do the same but this time type either 'chkdsk /f' or 'chkdsk /r' and restart. On reboot the system will do a very long (can be hours) disk check and repair during which you cannot use or switch off the PC and so leave time for this.

After that, if we still have the issue then we have checked OS and HDD and I would be running out of ideas.

So Win 10 thinks everything under 'documents' needs to be protected.

So you need to search for protected folders in settings then allow x3 to be exempt from Microsoft's awesome protection.

A reply to a 13 year old dormant thread is not really helpful, and what you cover was one of the first things discussed in the thread anyway.
