Hi,
Just started playing the X series, and I'm glad I did. I started from the beginning, and even X: BTF, for all it's jank and and ancient design, gave me quite a good time.
Now i'm doing X2, but i don't want to get too much into the empire building part in this game. The goal is to mostly breeze through the earlier games, to see the story, and progressively get used to the systems, so I have a much better idea once I reach X4 or X3:FL.
I already have 8 factories scattered throughout Argon and Paranid space and i've reached the point where i've bought and fully upgraded an M3 Nova. Would that be enough to finish the story without much headache, or do I need to save up some more for an M6, or (God forbid!) and M2?
I got quite the brutal cold shower from the game when attempting to do the Nyana's Hideout mission in an M4. Had to go way back to an earlier save, so i'm not too keen in repeating that experience. If an M3 is just barely scraping the barrel for endgame, i'd rather wait a bit more, maybe build a few more factories, and get a better ship.
X2 The threat - Possible to finish the story in an M3?

Re: X2 The threat - Possible to finish the story in an M3?
Didn't think the X2 forum would be so barren, but it's understandable, I guess.
So i finished the game, and yeah, it's possible to finish the story in an M3. Actually an M3 is kinda mandatory for some of the stuff you have to do in the final missions.
Probably the biggest difficulty spike is the Nyana's Hideout mission, if, like me, you ignore the repeated warnings from Ban Danna to start building up your empire and acumulate cash to upgrade your ship. He is kinda unclear on how strong you need to be, though, so be sure to get a fully decked M3 (preferably Argon Nova) before you start the conversation with the Paranid guy. From then on, an M3 is all you need. Played around with two of the M6's and I didn't really liked them, they are more powerful than an M3, but cumbersome much less maneuverable. It kinda depends on the model, but the basic strategy with an M6 or lager is to drive your ship in the middle of an enemy cluster, park it there and let the turrets do the work. An M3 is much more fun and involved.
So i hope I helped the 3 people that might play this game and stumble upon this thread.
