Does X3:Reunion support widescreen resolutions?

Post by X3:Noobie »

I've been trying to search the internet for answer to this. Does X3:Reunion officially support widescreen resolutions. The only thing I could find was a couple of patch notes stating "improved support" for widescreen resolutions. Does that mean it's not fully functional?

Don't know from personal experience, but I've seen people say that widescreen is flawless. Correct aspect ratios and everything (ie no stretching).

I do wonder what it looks like in widescreen though. X3 has a very high FOV, so there is a moderate fisheye effect. Can anyone who's played both normal and wide say if this is more noticeable in widescreen? The screenshots don't show it well, it's one of those things that you see more in motion.

I play it at 1680 x 1050 on my 22" widescreen monitor and it looks fantastic.

Yes, it supports widescreen. The phrase "improved support" means that it didn't work too well in the original version (a lot of distortion) but works almost perfectly now (just a little distortion in the monitor windows IIRC).

Re: the fisheye
Having changed my location recently and gone from a std 22" CRT playing 1600x1200 to a 24" Widescreen LCD @ 1920x1600 (Native)

I wouldn't say it was More Noticeable unless you start consciously looking for it, and then it is only really evident when your turning rapidly in a highly manouverable ship, std flight it's insignificant, and when turning rapidly, usually your focus of attention is on dodging or aquiring an enemy ;) or those heart stopping near misses with roids on autopilot

The only slight downer to running in higher rez Widescreen is the lack of the function to manually scale the Menu systems. (and the fact that when I return to the US i'll be back on the CRT)

Hey, I'm one of the lucky dogs to be fortunate enough to run bleeding edge gear.

Currently, I running (2) 8800GTX's in SLI on a Dell 30" and X3 is totally unusable above whatever by 768. The options are there for higher resolutions but, especially at the 2560xwhatever, it just make things soooo small it's not usable.

At the 2560 number the cut screens are totally blocky & look like crap.
Runs & looks good at the whatever x 768, so I just run that.

Is there some other setting I'm suppose to change besides the graphics setting in the 1st screen?

Also the "windowed option" doesn't seem to work in any resolution.
On the 30," it would be nice to have the game running in a window and poking around the web in the another window.

Great game thru,

On a high-end system you shouldn't have any problems running the game at high resolutions. That is, assuming you are talking about performance problems. Obviously the text will get smaller as the resolutions get higher, but I thought that part of the point of having a 30" screen was so that you had bigger pixels!

Obviously video will look blocky if it is replayed at a resolution higher than that at which it is stored in the game, but equally obviously it would be rather silly and wasteful to store it at a resolution that only a tiny number of people could actually play it at.

The windowed option works just fine for most people so I'm not sure what the problm might be there. You won't be able to have the game running in a window while you do something else, though, as like many games it pauses when the input focus goes elsewhere.

Hey CBJ, thanxs for all the help lately & sorry for being such a post @#$% the last few days.. I think, I should have waited to input my opinion until I applied 2.0.02

As you'll see, I got Antigone prob solved & 2.0.02 sq'd away.

OMG does 2.0.02 do wonders for this too.

The view on the 30' is incredible & oddly, I'm getting much less lag in an over loaded sector than I was before. We'll see how that goes over time.

I totally understand why the video is stored in a resolution that most people use, but it was terrible in pre 2.0.02 & now it looks much better.

The text too, it's was unreadablely small before, where now, it's right for what you expect on a monitor that size.

Not sure why the windowed doesn't work, but it doesn't matter because I didn't understand how it worked until your reply.

Thanks for the time & advice,

X3 seems to look to your graphics card drivers for supported monitor resolutions. So long as your graphics drivers are up-to-date and game patched to 2.0.02 (for better in-game wide-screen handling) things should be AOK :)

A good start would be to read back over over this thread noting the advice given and start a new thread if nothing there helps. Since this thread was 18 years dormant anyway, I think it can go back to sleep now.
