Not only the worst of the worstObserve wrote: ↑Sun, 2. Mar 25, 21:12Keep in mind, Guantanamo is intended as a short-term confinement for illegal aliens who are in the process of being deported. Supposedly, those who are sent there are the worst of the worst violent offenders. Most stay there for a few days or sometimes a few weeks until they can be sent to their home countries.
I did read the linked article. The two prisoners profiled claim they are not criminals. Well, they are criminals by virtue of being here illegally. As to whether they are the 'worst of the worst', is hard to tell. Naturally, as in the case of most prisons, there is a majority who claim innocence.
Nevertheless, I'm sure it is no fun to be there - or any prison for that matter. Hopefully their confinement is short, and they can be successful in their new lives.
That said, it is a horrific situation all around. We can't be having mass illegal residents. At the same time, it is understandable why many want to leave their countries of birth and come to the US.
So much sadness and suffering.![]()
„CBS“ wrote:[…] But in addition to sending those with criminal records or suspected or known gang ties — classified as "high-risk" detainees — U.S. officials have also transported migrants deemed to be "low-risk" to Guantanamo, according to the government documents obtained by CBS News. More low-risk migrants are expected to be transported on Wednesday, alongside high-risk detainees, the documents show.
Federal immigration authorities define low-risk detainees as migrants who face deportation because they are in the U.S. illegally but who have not been arrested or convicted of violent offenses or other serious crimes, government guidelines show. U.S. officials said they could include migrants who lack any criminal record but have been ordered deported because of civil immigration violations, like entering the country without proper documents.[…]

Does the crime of entering a country without proper documentation really warrant this type of treatment?
