Keep in mind, Guantanamo is intended as a short-term confinement for illegal aliens who are in the process of being deported. Supposedly, those who are sent there are the worst of the worst violent offenders. Most stay there for a few days or sometimes a few weeks until they can be sent to their home countries.

I did read the linked article. The two prisoners profiled claim they are not criminals. Well, they are criminals by virtue of being here illegally. As to whether they are the 'worst of the worst', is hard to tell. Naturally, as in the case of most prisons, there is a majority who claim innocence.

Nevertheless, I'm sure it is no fun to be there - or any prison for that matter. Hopefully their confinement is short, and they can be successful in their new lives.

That said, it is a horrific situation all around. We can't be having mass illegal residents. At the same time, it is understandable why many want to leave their countries of birth and come to the US.

So much sadness and suffering.
Not only the worst of the worst
„CBS“ wrote:[…] But in addition to sending those with criminal records or suspected or known gang ties — classified as "high-risk" detainees — U.S. officials have also transported migrants deemed to be "low-risk" to Guantanamo, according to the government documents obtained by CBS News. More low-risk migrants are expected to be transported on Wednesday, alongside high-risk detainees, the documents show.

Federal immigration authorities define low-risk detainees as migrants who face deportation because they are in the U.S. illegally but who have not been arrested or convicted of violent offenses or other serious crimes, government guidelines show. U.S. officials said they could include migrants who lack any criminal record but have been ordered deported because of civil immigration violations, like entering the country without proper documents.[…]

Does the crime of entering a country without proper documentation really warrant this type of treatment?

No, it does not.

FYI: I was once known as a bleeding-heart liberal. A hippy, a tree hugger and the like. Still am actually (I've already explained why I voted for Trump, who is decidedly not my 'type'). As such, I am in constant dismay over how humans treat each other. And don't even get me started on how humans treat animals. Just take a tour of a chicken or pig farm and you will see how demented the human mind can be. It makes Guantanamo look like a walk in the park.

There is no justification for treating prisoners badly, no matter what they did! When we do, it dehumanizes us.

on the subject of being criminal

entering USA illegally is a misdemeanor by law.

requesting asylum, mentioned in the article, requires the person to be in US, illegally or legally

under Trump being one to request an asylum is all but illegal. We were already over this if you think back.

US would kidnap children from families and send mothers and fathers on their way, while kids are sorted out into foster care or elsewhere. You know, the same crime that the International Court is seeking Putin for. The same crime US had a couple of court cases under Trump before, with number kidnapped children being in around 5000.

So, sending people guilty of misdemeanor and seeking an asylum into a prison with no laws, which you also recall, under Bush, specifically was stated that neither US nor International laws apply to this prison, - is hardly a step into unusual.

We can have a separate thread just on these two topics.

"are we the baddies?" should've been asked years ago.

Funny sidenote ... we had elections in Germany the weekend before last, and the ads are still up. Trump currently looks like the wet dream of the German party MLPD, he is fulfilling several of their demands on their ads, maybe someone should tell the Republicans about this obvious ally in Germany ...

By the way, MLPD stands for "Marxistisch-Leninistische Partei Deutschlands", pretty much hardcore communists

Edit: Been meaning to comment on this older post for some time now, but never found the time ...

Clearly, those oversight and regulatory bodies aren't doing their job, else we wouldn't have the health crisis that we have. Are you suggesting (I don't think you are), that we should just continue trying to drug our way to health, while continuing to pour toxic chemicals down our throats?

With all our so-called science-based medical systems, we continue to get sicker and sicker, while spending more than any other country on 'health care'. I don't think the problem is in the science, but rather in the corporate interests that twist the science to their profit benefit.

Those institutions don't necessarily need to be 'killed', but they certainly do need a good shake up, so that they start serving the people the way they were intended, without corruption. Perhaps they aren't as corrupt as Kennedy says, but you can be sure that he will be examining his new-found agencies very closely.
You're making one mistake in your assumptions here. All other countries are "pouring those same toxic chemicals down their throats", yet enjoy much lower health care costs, better general health and longer life expectancies. The issues in the US health system are in no way adressed at all by Trump, Kennedy et al, they are destroying the few things that actually work. Granted, some people will earn even more from the system. At the cost of the average citizen though.

Also, no, you don't need to thank Musk for the work he is doing. He is earning billions from it (via reducing governmental oversight from his companies, eliminating liability and getting even more government grants than he already did ... oh, and by pushing selected crypto currencies and playing the market), I'm pretty sure he prefers that to your thanks.

So I need some context here. Trump just wrote that:

„All Federal Funding will STOP for any College, School, or University that allows illegal protests. Agitators will be imprisoned/or permanently sent back to the country from which they came. American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS! Thank you for your attention to this matter."

Questions:

What is an ‚illegal protest‘ in a country with such strong freedom of speech laws?

What does he mean by NO MASKS? Is it illegal to wear a mask during a protest in America?

I am as confused as you are.

However, in some States it is indeed illegal to wear a medical mask. Or is it Counties within a State?...

No idea, but apparently freedoms are very free in the US so it'll be fine. You don't get arrested for saying something... that happens only in the UK, where there's no freedoms.

Looking forward the inevitable cascade of trade wars the US is about to open... whereby everyone else keeps trading tarrif free between themselves, sources what they used to trade with the US for from other nations instead. The trade war may work on 1 or 2 targets... but once you open it on most of the world, it could go really really wrong, and sometimes getting to see this mess in real time is more interesting than the tedium of things just "working fine".

How can ramblings that make no sense be acceptable from a leader of non-small nuclear power?

We had to choose between the nonsensical ramblings of Harris or Trump. This was after the nonsensical ramblings of Biden got him ejected from the race.

Besides, nonsensical ramblings are the hallmark of politicians everywhere to some extent.

But yes, I get your point. I'm not a fan of Trump either; even though I voted for him.

US is targeting India with tariffs. And Thailand.

https://www.firstpost.com/explainers/us ... 69005.html

US threatening China with military action. China says it will go to war. It might actually happen. Don't think NATO will help the US? China has a mutual defence pact with several countries including Russia. Can't see Russia helping China.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/ ... -per-cent/

US trying to save face while backing out of a tariff war with multiple countries. Inflation going up and egg prices rising in US. Trump blames Biden. Trump fired the bird flu people.

Measles vaccine in US not being updated this year due to staff being fired. Vaccine is formulated based on best guesses. People holding measles parties to infect kids. RFK isn't doing stuff.

US trying to get Nord Stream 2 pipeline open again. Should probably remove the entire pipeline just in case.

Congressman Al Green removed during trump speech. Some other people held up small signs. One got ripped from their hands when they were holding it. Seems to have sparked a trend. News cameras quickly avoid these people mysteriously.

Best to watch that video provided at CNN about that particular situation to get an idea how politics work right now in the US. (Trump babbling -> his devotees cheering & applauding (and thus "interrupting"), people like Al Green start a democratic talk by just STANDING UP -> gets immediately warned -> gets removed, no resistance)
