[Feedback] Devs need to revisit this.

Post by vvvvvvvv »

What the title says.

Would be great if someone from the dev team updated motion control to support recent layouts. On Pico 4 game acts as if I have vive wands, meaning I need to stick-click to open menus and anything that requires "thumb tracking" doesn't work. Meanwhile oculus exe seems to forward me to vive version silently. That's regardless of me using PICO Connect or VD Streamer.

Currently testing if I can make this work with a gamepad.

I would say get away from your controller scheme altogether. Use the headset for the display and head tracking and use a HOTAS or controller. I am using a HOTAS (a thrustmaster t16000m) I will probably upgrade that setup to some Gladiators in the future, but it is serving me well at this point. I do use the keyboard and mouse as well on occasion - although I am still playing with the control scheme to get away from them.

I am also considering setting up a Voice Attack profile. I enjoyed using that in Elite Dangerous and think it is a natural fit for Space Sims in general

I wish you well in your making the game work - once you get past the controller issues, there is a really good game to enjoy here. It has its issues, but I am loving it! I would love to hear about your experiences once you get the game going well for you.

I don't have HOTAS and not planning to buy it at the moment. I do have Xbox controller which I use to play elite dangerous for months. I haven't touched rebirth for a while, because I was busy with other things, will play it again, and likely will keep it. Main issue while testing was that I couldn't roll.

In my opinion, elite approached xbox controller layout in a much more thorough fashion. Basically it distinguished between button press and button hold and used held buttons as modifiers, extending number of possible combinations of buttons to a huge number. For example, it was very common to hold A, B or RB and do something with D-pad. Rebirth does not have this, although it uses menu wheel on X and Y. Revisiting would be great to make modern motion controllers work too.

Elite controller layout looke like this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous ... r_mapping/

The issue was similar, you couldn't use all axes at the same time, but you could freely toggle between yaw and lateral thrust.

I hope you get it working in a way you are happy with. On Egosoft's YouTube channel, Bernd has a couple videos going over different control schemes. including one for using an xbox controller if you haven't seen those yet.

I keep making edits and changes to my control scheme so it might be a never ending quest to find the right scheme.

I managed to cram all controls onto gamepad.

LT - fire missile
RT - fire gun
LB - Roll left
RB - roll right
DPadUp - Accelerate
DPadDown - Decelerate.

That mostly did it. I lost "target nearest" button, though, which was mapped to DPadDown.

However, then I discovered that stations are closed, and while there's missions to visit interior, there's nobody inside. Which ... is one more reason to revisit the game for the devs. WOuld make a lot of sense to restore cut content, given that hardware is much more powerful now.

I do believe there are some mods that restore things like the people in the stations... I have one mod that open all the stations so you don't have to do a mission to access them, but because the conversations are so monotonous, I use a mod to initiate the small talk and mostly skip the minigame. I find the only reason I go to the stations is to get a trade agent or pick up a fare. For the most part, I enjoy playing the game from the cockpit. I am using quite a few mods and find they do improve the game, especially in areas that reduce monotony. Initiate Small Talk and Infinite Boost (especially for those missions where you have to travel 1000km away 30km at a time - I end up using like a supercruise. Or I just set the direction and take care of orders for ships and stations while I fly.

I am finding I really like the game itself - although I would love to have an overhaul of the UI. I have read some of the posts from players who have played with high numbers of hours. There is some really good game play in this game but it is not perfect. And I think that is why the developers went on to build X4. If there was a way to put a VR mode in that game, I would probably switch over myself, although I am using the time I am playing XRVR to also try to figure out what I like about the game and what I would want to do if I had some level of design control - how would I make the game different? As it stands, I really enjoy the game (with some of the mods) and my enjoyment grows over time - which is something that I have been a little more surprised with as I tend to eventually get bored and move on to something else.

I'll be looking at the "rebuild" set of mods which restore things once I'm done with the questline of "Restoration" project in vanilla XR. Looking at it, It is quite obvious that a good chunk of Rebirth mechanics were reused in X4. Scanning thing is unchanged, for example.

I mainly played X4, but I would prefer to play X4 in VR. Because prior to returning (again) to X4, I spent a few months regularly playing Elite Dangerous in VR. Before I got fed up with their shop, policies, etc. Unlocking visible ship number for "Arx" (in-game currency) is one of the most disgusting in-game experiences I had. Elite also has incredibly weak lore.

I've been trying to ask for VR support for X4, but didn't have success. And in case of Rebirth it really feels like Egosoft had almost created one of the perfect VR experiences, but then went ahead and gutted half of it. Hence the initial request to revisit.

Hardware has become much more powerful, and one pass over Rebirth could at least result in a few sales. Just need to fix the controllers, and unlock the rest of the original content.

I hear you... I would love a bit of a revisit to XRVR, and I would CERTAINLY LOVE LOVE LOVE X4 to have the ability to use an HMD.... I've only played about an hour of it but because the immersion just isn't there for me (I will fully admit, I am completely spoiled and ruined by VR - all I see is the flat panel). Even in XRVR... It currently crashes anytime I try to do something in the stations as far as taking missions or even story points... so to get around that, I open the game flat and do what I need to do, save it and then restart the game back in the headset. I'm not complaining about that process (I am glad I can move on with the game - and as I understand it, it is certainly a mod causing the crash), but even that interaction on the flat screen takes me out of the moment of seeing that mannequin standing in front of me - the size of an actual person, in 3D, and it is hard to describe how different it is.

I've seen these videos of people adding AI to games like Skyrim and have been very tempted to try to do the same for XRVR. How cool would it be to talk to the NPCs like they were "people" and not hear the same dialog over and over again... the future of gaming is going to be crazy!

But yes... I do love Elite's cockpit experience, and I don't mind its lore... there is a pretty great experience there, but you do have to really work for it, not that I mind that, but where it does lack, the game falls off a cliff for enjoyment. It looks like they are changing that, but I have been out for a while thanks to technical issues. I am loving that X is a single player experience where I do get to have an impact on the galaxy and the game. If I got to design a Space sim, it would be much closer to X than to Elite, but would probably look more like Elite than X, not that X looks bad, but the menu style interface and using flat "monitors" in the cockpit... I would love to go in and recreate the entire user interface system. Its usable as it is, but I am taking real world notes in order to make sure I don't have to flip back and forth between menu options when managing my fleet and the mission jobs or ordering components for my construction ship to pick up before it starts building a station. And not to mention how many of the trade ships I see not doing much... I would love a more robust fleet management system... but hey, this game allows for modding and I should learn how to do that myself to make it sop much more fun and fine tuned. Loving the game though - far more than I am complaining about it.
