Plot missions difficulty

Hey guys. Just started playing the game in vr and advanced to the Albion Xenon incursion mission. Got to the area with friendlies and bad buys, killed the xenon with their help, and now the plot mission is asking me to do the same thing another time. Travel to empty space, and "protect the space". But what im seeing is that my friendly forces get killed very quickly and I get swarmed by 5-10 xenon and get killed. I have x3 shields but cant upgrade weapons yet due to the plot mission advancement. How do i proceed? It is so early in my game yet the game expects me to complete a very hard plot mission...Any auggestions would be great..thanks.

I got to the same point and flew the mission several times. Then I left the area and just kept playing in the sandbox. I would love to be able to get back to the plot of the story, although in looking for it I saw some spoilers that make me think I might just want to stick with the sandbox mode. That being said, if you do find a way to carry on with the story, please let me know!
