I created my own backgrounds also modifying the sun position and the lightning of the sector to adapt to the new environment. All of this started when i decided to change all the stars to a new textures (double size) cause the original ones are excessively blurred due its low resolution.
Im also decided to change the milky way in the terran sectors cause its a real pain try to get a decent real image like a base image adaptable to the game.
Another thing that i discovered playing with the galaxy its that the game uses the sun or planets very often in the same fashion with hight levels of projected light (nearly white) when i found a lot more atmospheric softer lower levels of coloured light dependent of the background color.
One more thing is the lack of some warm colors for a few sectors, the game have an excessive use of purples for my taste. Question of taste of course.

The answer to your question is that this isnt a released mod but i will take in consideration a possible release if this images get some people interest.

My new Wraith complex - Terran SPPs are bluddy huge!!! They dwarf the 15 missile fabs!
