graphics bug or feature? help

Post by codru »

Look at the two pictures, in one the station is bright at the base, as soon as i move just a bit the ship, the station suddenly turns darker, when i move the ship to the initial position it becomes bright again. It jumps like this for all terran stations. As soon as i get closer to a station parts of it turn darker, the transition is not smooth it just jumps from one to another which is really annoying  Imagine flying through terran sectors and the big stations suddenly changing from brighter to darker, and not the whole station in one shot but part by part. What is it?

Game version 2.1. No mods.

sorry about the pic size, thought they were not that big

now can someone tell me what is wrong with the textures? is it supposed to jump like that from brighter to darker, is there a fix for this?

The rendering of factories alters as the player approaches the models, I have seen big jumps in the way they change colour and level of detail, yes it looks poor, but I doubt it's going to be corrected.

You could try toggling the AQC, to see if this makes the steps a little less harsh on the eye, there are a few other filters and switches you can play with.

so this is not a bug? :o why did they make big ass stations give them so much detail and in the end ruin everything by making the textures jump so much between low detail and high detail? am i the only one who finds it annoying? ego please tell me there is a way to fix this, perhaps change some values somewhere or something that would stop it? the light-dark jump in textures is really making me not want to play the game and i really like it, what a shame

btw i have aqc off. anything else i can do to decrease the effects of this "bug" (cause i sure cannot call it a feature)

The change in colour you are seeing (the darkening) is the occlusion mapping that is only rendered at a certain distance and under. Basically occlusion mapping is what allows the game to apply shadows on an object based on where light is coming from.

IMO it isn't a bug but it is annoyingly obvious. Maybe in a future patch a slow step up to full occlusion would make it much less obvious.

is it not possible for us to change some value somewhere in order to make this occlusion thing happen at further distances? ex: instead of seeing the jump in textures at 10 km to see it at 30 km or something like that, this way when we approach a station we can see it all nice and stuff???

btw i dont remember in x3r was it the same? it seems to me it is way worse in tc, perhaps they did it this way to increase performance at the cost of quality?

and how come nobody from ego explains this problem?

edit: also if you look at the picture where the base of the station is darker the top is still bright, as soon as i approach the station by 1km it suddenly turns darker too, the transition is immediate, not smooth at all. if i stop the ship at a certain distance and simply move the mouse left and right, the station goes from bright to dark like a disco ball, turning right it is darker turning left brighter, and the turns are not even big. Give this thing flying through Terran space is crazily annoying. "hey look a big ass cool looking station that is bright and nice! wait it's dark now, hold on i turned left and it is bright again. that is some cool terran special effects"

You are posting to a forum of X gamers and not to Egosoft employees or developers. Your hope is that another gamer will have a good idea or that enough will complain in chorus to cause someone here to raise it in the developers' forum. As there may not be as much concern about this as over some more game-breaking issues, your best hope is that a more experienced modeller/simulator using this forum will have some good advice for you.

Not quite true. While many people posting here are helpful gamers like yourself, posts here will be seen by Egosoft devs. They won't always generate a response from them though.

any modders out there can tell me if it is possible to increase the distance when ships and stations switch from low detail to high detail? is there a value in the files somewhere where it says "go from low to high at 5 km" or something like that? i would really like to change this even if performance takes a hit.

No It wasn't this way in X3R, as iirc occlusion mapping was only added to Terran Stations in TC, so you won't notice it in X3R because it wasn't there to begin with.
codru wrote:edit: also if you look at the picture where the base of the station is darker the top is still bright

That is because the occlusion is applied to sepperate parts of the model as you get into the predefined range (i have no idea what this range is though or how to change it, perhaps someone from the S&M forum can help you out in this regard.
