Hmmm, well actually turns out my motherboard wasn't asus.. that was my old desktop.
Rather my current motherboard is an ECS, this one to be precise http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ECS/G31T-M/1.html
I've gone over trying to find any pci latency timer with this motherboard, but still no luck.
- Edit -
I found a different version of the latency config program that was listed in post 2, it didn't crash, in fact it worked, I doubled the value from 64 to 128 and so far every game I run, including x3tc seems to be very good fps and little stutter, I may try upping the value later if I so need to.

I don't think it's a question of relieving stress on the system..paulms1980 wrote:that does make sense about the pci being strained!
im running 4 sata2 drives, a 5way usb hub and a overpowerd soundcard and my agp all on my poor pci bus
it's more a matter of synchronisation - getting the various components to work together more efficiently
the Guru3D article mentions that it's only suitable for XP and AGP..
they state that there should be no need to apply this tweak to a PCi-E based system..
- I haven't any experience of Vista, so I don't know for sure..
- the whole universe is running in BETA mode - we're working on it.. beep..!!

Who cares about Vista abusers? Vista is now dead for sureBugMeister wrote: the Guru3D article mentions that it's only suitable for XP and AGP..

I must repeat again -- i have PCI-E GF 8800 and onboard audio and tweak worked!

-It was already mentioned on page 1 where to find the tool.
-no its not in your Bios, because it only changes the pci latency interrupt timing of your soundcard only to better
synchonize with your videocard.
-remember (SAVE - APPLY) otherwise it resets to its default value.
-use 248

According to this article it will work with vista, if you turn off UAC while running it. Normal advisories apply.

Yeah it WILL install on Vista x64 with UAC off but the driver will fail to init...
I will try to boot allowing unsingned drivers, but as far i know unsigned drivers work when UAC is off...
Also i fail to understant how this will improve anything... apart from the audio gitch... all other devices are conected to a PCI-E bus so i dont understand...
for the audio gitch that i also have, i will try to turn off the firewire controller, because sisoft sandra says is sharing a pci bus with my audigy at 32 cycles, both of them.

o) my explanation at the beginning of the thread mentions sound as the example but this is not the only thing that uses your pci bus.
o)in device manager click view by connection and you can see for yourself.
o)if a bus device needs the timer set to 128 to complete its task and it's lower than 128 the bus will be released to the next device that requests access, finished or not.
o) if the same device needs the timer set to 64 and its actually 128 then the task will finish before allowing other devices to use the bus.
o)sorry SpaceSquirrel but setting this to 248 won't work on all systems and may cause conflicts with pci-e video cards. although higher seems to be better its not always the case.
o)for example my system cannot handle 248 because of my raid, dvd, sound, monitor(firmware thing) and usb etc all use the pci bus.
o) if anyone can find a vista compatable tool listing it here would be much appreciated, but keep in mind that newbies read this forum too. make sure you include warnings if its for advanced users or if it may cause problems.

99.9% of apps won't tax your pci bus like x3:tc. that is why it took me until now to solve the problem. it's like having to put spoilers on your car to stay on the highway at the posted speed limit.BugMeister wrote:

If the PCI Latency tweak is helping that's good, but at the very least don't say it works for PCI-Express graphics, cuz PCI-E does not have PCI Latency.
Most if not all motherboards have the PCI Latency value. But as stated above the BIOS setting is for all PCI devices not selective. Also depending on the make of the board the listing might not actually say PCI Latency or shows a different value.
For example, an MSI board will show PCI Latency and lists values like 32/64/128/etc, while an nForce board might show PCI Latency 8CLK with values like 4/8/etc...
Another possibility why the BIOS doesn't show is cuz ur firmware is outdated.
Also PCI Latency is not a talismanic fix for ur woes, as it's not an exact fix to increase or decrease the latency. To properly diagnose a fix u have to determine the latency requirements of all ur shared devices before arriving at a mutally device-agreeable value. Too high and all other devices are waiting for it, too low and ur device will experience anomalies; either might even lock/BSOD the system.
