Been playing for 3 weeks and now game is starting to stutter

Post by HellNY »

The only thing thats changtes is that I have many many actories and 2 large complexes, plus probably 15 ships. But relative to whats already in the game, should this cause the stuttering?

The stuttering is happening even in low graphics demand sectors.

Doies the game stutter more as you add more ships and stations to it? I had no stuttering uintil now. I haver a high end system with 4 gB RAM.

The onlky scripts im running are the bonus pack.

What gives?

Although being in crowded sectors can drop the frame rate way down, the number of your factories or ship should not effect it that much. Unless they are all in the sector with you.

Check if your video or audio settings have been accidentally changed.

Mine only gets flicker in big fights, and not that bad then. I have a medium system with only 1Gb ram.

Try the Tech Support forum, they might know more. :)

Out of sector combat or scripts (official or otherwise)

1. Heavy xenon, khaak or pirate combat in other sectors (khaak tend to go to sleep when no player property is in the sector)

2. Too many civilian ships in sectors you have recently visited or viewed the sector map of

3. The number of NPC trading ships in the game may have risen too high

4. Ships running the Egosoft command "Collect rocks in Sector" that do not finding collectable rocks in range. Stutters a lot with 20 odd ships wandering around clueless in a rocky system.

5. Large number of ships trying to dock at one station (log jam)

Try putting all your ships on command none to see if it clears.

We need more information in order to offer sensible suggestions. What exactly is your "high end" system? A DXDiag report would help a lot. What else is running in the background? And what size are your savegames?

Here is my DXDiag report. I Have Norton AV on in background but thats balways been on since the beginning. If any of my background programs are responsible, then why would they not have been affecting the game since the beginning?

Do you have any scripts or mods active in your game?

Make sure you have the AMD Dual Core Optimizer, get it here.

EAX should be turned off on the splash screen, with a integrated sound chip. (Have you considered a real sound card? Seems a shame to have a stacked system like that and use junk mobo sound. Though I don't believe this is the source of the problem...)

The only scripts or mods I have are the Bonus Pack. That all. I also activated the Dual Core Optimazer months ago.

I should definitely get a real sound card, though again that seems to be unlikely as a cause of the problem. AFter all, all of my system was in place early in the game when I had no problems.

Ok running antivirus in the background is never recommended, especially if it is set to scan each file as it opened, try ending it in task manager.

You would be amazed how many problems are caused by crappy sound drivers AC97 being a prime suspect.

Processor is hardly high end but good enough, if you have other things in the background it could struggle as this game is quite CPU bound.

GFX card is top notch but I noticed something else, your monitor shows as generic with max resolution of 1600x1200 and you are running at 1920x1200.

May need monitor installing in Windows or adjusting resolution to match.

Turning off Norton made no difference, and again I must point out that all the settings I have now are the same settings I had when this wasnt stuttering a week ago. I had norton running then and the same PC. No problems thne.

WHat has changed is I have many more commercial agents and factories. BUt I just cannot believ how it stutters now, especially when a new video appears in a monitor or a new ship arrives or I fire for teh 1st time.

If its my Sound drivers for AC97 then why was my game not stuttering last week? That didnt change.

Stuttering in videos is normally a sign of a codec or driver problem. Codecs can change very easily - installing almost any software, especially games, that use them can upset Windows' delicate balance. Try (re)installing WMP 10 or 11 and see if that helps, or use MadBoris' DShow tool at the top of the forum.

This is just looking grim. I used the codec tool described and found that there was 1 "nonpreferred codec." I was able to get back to the preferred codec by reinstalling Windows Media PLayer 11. But the problem remains and in fact is arguably worse.

Again..this game was smooth as glass a few weeks ago.

I then followed the instructions for "Attach to X3" and found there were 14....count 'em...14 "RED" codecs still attached to X3 . Those of you familiar with this tool apparently know that X3 can still stick with nonpreferred codecs even when the main screen shows it is not.

I have no way of knowing how I am suppsed to do such profound "computer surgery" to get the codecs out of the Red. The program suggests I hunt down these codecs, rename them, and start the game again to see if it picks the "correct ones" now. I do not see how renaming codecs in my system., none of whose function I understand, is even safe. Expecially in reading people's experienees and problems resulting from altering these parameters.

And I have never heard of a game requiring such feats to work properly

Again. this was not a problem a few weeks ago. Ive already reinstalled and no joy. It stutters when I fire, when a new video pops up, when new ships enetr this system, when anything happens.

How can a casual gamer who just wants to enjoy this game solve this?

Im hoping beyons hope for help on this.

Try posting in MadBoris' thread about this. The experts on unpicking Windows codec nightmares tend to keep an eye on that thread.

Unfortunatley I am just about done

Post by HellNY »

This seems so unecessary and very unfortunate. Im afraid to say that I have just about given up on X3. It worked flawlessly for 3 weeks and then startted stuttering unmercifully in the last 2 weeks. I have done absolutely everything I know to do. Removed the Bonus Pack, Reinstalled, Started a New Save Game, Updated my Drivers (even testing leaked Beta drivers), switching the affinity to onbe processor, using teh Dual COre Optimizer, DOnloading the Microsoft Dual COre Hotfix, getting the latest AMD Chipset Dual Coire Drivers, Turning all the graphics down to nothing, trying windowed mode, Using teh Codec utillity provided, swapping out "nonpreferred codecs," downloading Windows Media Player 11, Getting codecs from NVidia, turning off all antivirus and background programs, turing explorer off, using the KLITE COdec pack, disabling myh Realtyek onboard Audio, getting a new SoundBlaster sound card, phiscially removing a 2nd hard drive just in case it was creating a power drain.

And this is om;y the stuff I remember. I have been spending almost as much time trying to fix whatever went "wrong" with X3 as I did playing it for those 1 few glorious weeks.

Nothing works. It started stuttering after 3 weeks of play and hasnt stopped since. This is very unfortunate, as it appears X3 cannot function in a stable manner on my AMD 64X Dual COre 3800 system. This would be just unlucky for me if it werent also for teh fact that I read about these stuttering problems in myriads of posts throughout the board. I have never had a game do this , nor have I been required to travel through such hoops in attempts to make a gam eoperate properly on my computer. In the end I just cannot keep hitting my head against the wall. SOoner our later Ijust decide that a game that requires so much tweaking and computer surgery has problems.

This is not a rant but an honest observation as I see it. I will still check in to see if there are new suggestions but the whole experience has become more than unreasonable.

You should try posting a DXDiag output, state which version you're running and what, if any, scripts you have running.
