GOT A HUGE PERFORMANCE BOOST BY EDITING DRAW DISTANCE ON MAPS!!! 8)

But the penalty is that you can't see objects and stations if you aren't within 15Km ( I made it the same for every map backround because I don't know what line is for what sector ) :lol:


But do you really need to see all things? Every small pixel ship on the screen? Are you constantly using Video Enhancement Goggles?

Well I'm not, I can still view objects by targeting them and using monitor or by hitting F1 until I see my target because draw distance is made from the spot where my camera currently is!! :D

And as a plus I could raise my graphics options and still have that nice FPS increase:

1024*768*32 -> 1280*1024*32
texture quality was same -> high
shader quality was medium -> high
postprocess was off -> on



Now thanks to HighVelocitys original finding and Hectors mod files I can provide this same to you!

I edited the original game TBackgrounds.pck file from 04.dat file which can be found in the X3 folder. I used DoubleShadows X3 editor.

Here is the last line from TBackgrounds.pck file:

0;0;0.000000;0.000000;0.000000;0;0;void;1;1;1;25;50;10;0;0;0;0;0;0;0;0;0;0;200000000;2100000000;120;120;120;0;0;0;0;0;0;0;SS_BG_35

Now these little numbers in the line define the draw distance:

2100000000 (the bigger number is where the draw distance starts, it is at 4200 Km)

200000000 (the smaller number is where the draw distance ends, it is at 400 km)

Example about the math:

200,000,000 / 5 / 100 = 400,000 meters

400,000 / 1000 = 400 km


So I made the draw distance to start from 15 km and end at 5 km (the appearing might be too slow now, depends of your flying speed of course :D )

I got FPS about 9-11 with lower settings before this mod in Argon Prime... :evil: And I was just flying around!!!

With this mod I have 18-25 with the higher settings!!! :P

The MOD IS ORIGINALLY MADE BY HECTOR, I just edited the draw distances!

I think someone will tweak this mod even better and further than I but heres a snack for you hungry fellows out there in the dark cold space:

Sorry but I HAD to do the second the last vote... only Argon Prime is really a problem, and I se every sector to 100km to 110km.

I'm curious to know:
1. what is your frame rate in major battles?
2. what version is your catalyst drivers?
3. what are your graphical settings?

The reason that I'm asking is because I have:

I9800PRO modded to 9800XT 446MHz core and 810MHz memory with 128MB, and I use omega drivers based on cat 5.11.
AMD 2800+ slightly overclocked to 2040MHz
2*512MB 6-2-2-2.5 at 280 MHz
SATA HD

And when it comes to battles (20-25 ships) like in sector ghinn's escape my computer goes on to its knees and begs for mercy. :o

This is without the mod of course and with low graphics settings...

Can you post your modded file(s)... I hate that stupid pop-up short view distance sectors. I dont want less draw distance, I want MORE!

so setting it to lets say 25 to 10 will make things not 'pop-up' ..
and might increase performance a bit ..??

I'll go and fidlle a bit with this .. :roll:

My performance was fine (AMD64 4000+ / GF 6800 Ultra). The popup was annoying and looking for gates in a non-existent pea-soup fog was just stupid. Seeing stations/asteriods popup from the middle of nowhere looked ridiculous. This makes it so much better, thanks.

Ran a test.

In argon prime, I spawned 50 barracuda raiders without using this mod... combat FPS was 2-3.

I tried the mod, 50 raiders again. FPS was 15-20 ... a massive improvement.

If you want to have huge battles, this mod really is a godsend.

Nicely done.

If the draw distance starts at 15Km and ends at the same 15Km objects appear at once when you're within 15Km from it.

If I ad some scale between the start and end (starts at 15Km, end at 5Km) there comes a shady effect when objects starts appearing instead of just popping out. Now when you are within 5Km from the object, which is the end of the scale, then it is fully drawn.

It seems that people don't have as much performance problems as I thought they would... :lol:

I could do modifications to the original game file and share it if someone doesn't like using mods?

I could .rar them about 3 * 50MB patches...
I would do this only for 2 optimised files after I test what is the best draw distance without losing too much performance and the second for that 50/45 maybe...

I was thinking about chancing the scale from 15/5 to 15/10, and making 2 other mod files something like 25/20 & 50/45??

I think I won't make it without scale because it looks really stupid if something just pops out and 5km scale ain't too bad.
Those who don't like draw distance and scales can use 200Km mod or if they want everything just way it was without nebulas go to Hectors post:

lo chaps, i've not had chance to do much since :( in a few hours i'll fire up the game, have a fly about looking at popups and all ex-foggy systems will get changed to something a bit more acceptable. some ex-foggy systems are a hazard to fly through on manual flight. it looks clear and then bang, a roid is in your face. in the fog you tend to take some care because you can't see much.. i'll leave that mod alone then, it'll suit some people perhaps.

hanki84, i used doubleshadows X2ModManager to make new mod cats. when installed it's shown in the x3 editor. change the X2ModManager's settings to point to x3 and x3\mods. you can then have your mods named according to their ranges for easy user archiving/testing.

it seems a few people got something from your tweaking, on both sides of the fence.. that's cool 8)

Thanks, once I have more time I will do more testing with more sectors and take some time for this... There really wasn't enough time to do tests with all sectors and ships and etc...

Just 'stumbled upon' this mod with a little help from NumNuts in this thread.

Will this work with 1.3? If so, this should definitely be added to the collection-sticky, as I suspect a lot of players would love to get rid of the fog.

Forgive me for being a totally clueless n00b here, but I sort of need to sort of activate this FPS-tweak and sort of don't know what to do. Like. Um. Some sort of mod-manager, it seems? Where do I find it? (Combat FPS is too close to 10 to be considered playable, and I just keep getting killed.)

[Edit] Nevermind about finding it, Metacrawler is man's best friend. But activating the mod is a bit of a tough one. I think I put the .pck where it belongs, but I still have to do something with the .dat... I think?

Seriously, I'm in need of a FPS-boost, and I need help with this. I think I used the .cat right (save the .pck in the same place in 04.cat), but that .dat-file must have some sort of purpose. I'm fairly sure the FPS have gone up a notch though - I just might have hit 30 with only me and a planet on the screen. But combat? Ha, even LOMAC runs better then...
