I opted for the 5800X when I bought mine, partly due to availability at the time, and partly due to not wanting to lose 2 cores from a 3700x I had already. Currently running it with a 5700xt and 32 Gb 3200 16. I game on a 1080p even though I have 1440p right next to it. I’ve never gotten far end game wise, but I haven’t ever noticed performance drops that concern me. I know it’s not very technical, but I tend to not worry about fps until it starts to really affect my game play.
Use the Thaiphoon to get a reading of your RAM, transfer it to DRAM Calculator and try to overclock based on the application readings. Use the recommended values.

I don’t see any reason why I should, my games all run smooth as butter, and I have no desire to mess with altering my setup to use hardware beyond their certified levels.

I'm sort of with you on this. It's all well and good to get a few extra MHz out of a system but if you ever have issues, the first thing any support response will say is... oh, you're overclocking are you? :sceptic:

If you have an older system that you want to stretch a bit more life out of then it may make sense and if you can only afford/justify a lower end game system and want to play titles you otherwise couldn't then maybe that too. If you just want to max everything you have then okay but it's not for everyone as there's effort and risk attached.

Personally, I (like most is seems) do a complete upgrade every 4-6 years and interested in long-term stability and performance headroom so I'm risk averse to anything that adds complexity. Boring, I know. :boron:

So AMD have some new CPU's coming out the 5600G and 5700G. the 5600G is pretty much a 5600X it still has 6 cores/12 threads, it's base running speed is 2 MHz higher than the 5600X @ 3.9 GHz and 3.7 GHz respectively while it's boost speed is 2 MHz lower @ 4.4 GHz and 4.6 GHz. The main new part is that it also has a Vega 7 graphics chip built in running at 1.9 GHz but it keeps it's 65W TDP so still runs pretty cool. The 5700G has 8 cores 16 threads just like it's bigger brother the 5800X so comparing it to the 5800X the base speed are both the same @ 3.8GHz while there is a slight difference in boost speed @ 4.6GHz for the 5700G and 4.7GHz for the 5800X. Like the 5600G the 5700G also comes with a graphics chip but this time it is the Vega 8 running at 2.0GHz. The other thing of note is that the 5700G like its little brother runs at 65W TDP so it is also running pretty cool. The recommended retail price is $259 USD for the 5600G and $359 USD for the 5700g and they are coming to the market on August 5.

So they are both looking like reasonably specked chips, selling for a reasonable price (before the scalpers buy them all). We will just have to wait and see just how they recompare to the rest of the market when the reviews start coming in.

And... what's the catch? The MSRP for the 5600X was (is?) $299 USD and you're getting pretty much the same performance with added graphics for $40 less!

I am totally lost with this current gen of CPUs and GPUs - some Intel CPUs are still better for gaming but Ryzen is better overall when looking at workloads too, RTX has DLSS but only on a few titles that support it, RX will have FSR (and also on RTX apparently) but it's not as good as DLSS and still only if game devs choose to implement it. You can also have Ray Tracing but only on the very latest AAA games and only if you're prepared to buy a graphics card for the price of a small car!

The world is mad and I think I'll carry on with my GTX1070 and ignore the RTX3080Tis that have just appeared on the shelves at my local store (starting @ $2,300USD) until some sense returns, even if that takes a year.

I'm mad too and got caught up in all of this:
- I built a new system around a 5900X even though there's nothing technically wrong with my 4770K - because I bought into the whole "it's the best CPU and if you don't buy it now it could be months before it'll be on the shelves again and who knows what the price will be then!!!" although, I've been planning an upgrade for a long time and got a reasonable price on the 5900X (maybe $40 over MSRP back in Jan)
- Only this week, I very nearly bought a complete 5600X based gaming system for $2,200USD, why, when I have a new 5900X system? because it was on sale and came with an RTX3060Ti and after pricing the other components individually the RTX3060Ti worked out at $650USD (an RTX3060 non-Ti on its own is for sale @ $830 at the same store) - the only thing that stopped me was that they sold out before I got there! A close call considering I don't really have a spare $2,200 and don't have any titles that "need" more than a GTX1070

I'm not normally an impulsive purchaser, honest. But I think I'll unsubscribe from a few YouTube tech channels for a while.
except for MSRPs the pricing here has been converted from NZD and incl taxes

You might know this but not all video cards that come with prebuilts are the same as normal video cards. You might get a smaller card that doesn't perform as well or has heat issues. Prebuilts are probably the easiest way to get a card I am guessing. Might be a year or two until things get back to normal? Mining cards might be hitting the resale market soon? Cpus might be getting a boost (or not ) ? They say the same thing every year it seems like. DDR5 ram coming out?
