What is Dead Space like anyway?

I always saw it as looking a lot like Doom3. Just curious to know if anyone has given it a go. If so, should I try #1 or #2?

I could look at the reviews of course, but this forum > reviews as I it's 50/50 as to whether I agree with them and 90/10 for the gents here ;)

Dead space 1 isn't 100% mouse friendly for pcs. Looking around and moving can be a bit uncomfortable. Dead space 2 controls seemed good for pc users. Watch gameplay / walkthrough videos to get an idea of the game. I only played about half way through the first one and didn't find it intriguing. The usual low sale price is about 4.99 usd. The game goes on sale fairly often but you might have missed it for x-mas.

-apparently it might not have had a steam sale yet so it might still go on for 75% off but the sale is almost over with only approx 23 hours left. So there's a small chance at a 75% off sale in that period. It's currently 50% off.

- cheapest in US ( may be region restricted ) is 11.99 usd - 5% using code IAMANELDERGEEK (~11.39 usd) foer dead space 1+2 bundle at gamersgate.com

I preferred the first. It's ok.
I always found it annoying because usually the task was clear from the start but it was constant "oh no! now you gotta do this first" all the time.

If you play it, turn the music off, otherwise you'll know when you're about to get attacked and it'll take any suspense out of it

I thought #1 was OK, but I when I got hit by a bug in #2 two hours into the game where a vital door (the only way out of the area) wouldn't open as it should have done. After getting to the same point and getting the same issue 3 times, I got no help from customer support other than,"Sorry, restart the game" so I uninstalled in disgust and haven't played it since.

Dead Space is far better than Doom 3, IMHO--while it still relies heavily on jump scares, at least the areas you're travelling through are well-lit enough that you can actually see the monster that's trying to chew your face off! (Not actually played Dead Space 2, although it's been in my Steam library since a couple of sales ago...must get round to it when I finish Far Cry 3).

Interesting, think I'll pick up number one to see how it goes. Something to jump in to and have fun for a few minutes in between other things maybe. Thanks for the advice about turning off the music ;)

Side note, I went back to The Witcher 2 too if you saw my last rant thread. It does get better after chapter 2 afterall.

This is interesting. They developed a supercapacitor that can be quickly charged (30 seconds) that can store enough energy to run phones, etc... It might be a viable choice for electric cars and can be printed on the back of solar panels to store reasonable amounts of energy. They use graphene http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphene which is sheets of carbon only 1 atom wide. Graphene is also being used to miniaturize electronics and seems to posses a lot of potential.

And, it has been since its discovery. It will continue to be for quite awhile, yet. I think graphene is friggin awesome. :D

(Runs off to buy some graphite and Scotch Tape.)

Seems suitable to drop this in here:
a 9.5 lb smart phone satellite! :o

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-21577780
The mission will see the so-called "smartphone-sat" - a world first - orbit the Earth for six months.
Strand-1 being worked on by engineers The technology has been developed at the University of Surrey

Weighing 4.3 kg (9.5lbs) and measuring 10cm by 30cm (4in by 12in), the satellite has been developed by the University of Surrey's Space Centre (SSC) and Surrey Satellite Technology (SSTL).

"This mission is a fantastic achievement and a great tribute to the hard work of the engineers involved," said Sir Martin Sweeting, director of SSC, and also executive chairman of SSTL.

At first, the Strand-1 satellite will be controlled by a standard onboard computer, but in phase two of the mission, a Google Nexus phone will take the reins - equipped with a number of special apps

A CRIME OCCURS IN SCOTLAND!
Oops: Workers flush thousands of gallons of whiskey down the drain

Workers at Chivas Brothers plant in Scotland have accidentally flushed thousands of gallons of the company’s whiskey, instead of its wastewater, down the drain.

The accident happened Tuesday at the Chivas Brothers plant in Dumbarton, Scotland, where about 600 workers are employed. A spokesman told NBCNews.com that the company produces multiple brands of whiskey at the site.

The company said the amount of whiskey spilled was less than the approximately 5,000 gallons reported earlier in other media, but declined to give exact figures....

Interested in the Homeworld auction result--those games were never huge sellers in the first place, so interest isn't likely to be high, and the ideal situation (e.g. a developer with experience in both RTS and space sim genres buying the rights) seems almost vanishingly unlikely, so will be a big surprise if anything good comes out of that!
